We understand that hunters demand quality and a good deal when choosing their next hunt, and global economy is not doing anyone any favours! Our hunts are not the cheapest New Zealand hunting option, but we do offer you exclusivity, privacy and genuine hunt experiences customised for your needs.

Our team loves to deliver incredible hunts to people that see the relationship built with the outfitter and guides as being as important as the hunt itself. We can summarise our hunts into two distinct New Zealand hunting experiences:

The ‘Backcountry New Zealand Trophy Hunts’, fair-chase hunting operated on New Zealand's premier private game estate with exceptional trophy animals & stalking terrain.

The ‘Backcountry New Zealand Alpine Wilderness Hunts’ exploring free range mountainous terrain of the South Islands Southern Alps for those that love the challenge of tough terrain.

All hunting trips operate in pristine locations selected for their uniqueness and solitude.

Welcome to your next adventure, New Zealand! Your hunt will be an exclusive, one party at a time, professionally guided experience. Unlike most other New Zealand outfitters, you wont be sharing the hunting grounds with other parties. Our focus is 100% on your experience and nothing else.

BACKCOUNTRY NZ HUNTING GUIDES

Get to know a little about your guides here, and then get to really know them while sharing great hunting moments together!

Lindsay Hayman - Game Estate & Free Range Hunt Guide Lindsay has been a keen hunter since he was a young boy and an alpine hunter since he was 18. With extensive hunting experience throughout the South Island and Stewart Island, Lindsay has brought a wealth of experience to the Backcountry team. Lindsay has spent his working life as a farm manger for a number of remote ranches and through this has developed some fantastic relationships and hunting opportunities on private properties. Lindsay is keen to share these opportunities and experiences with his clients.

Nigel Birt - Owner Nigel founded Backcountry New Zealand in 1998, having developed the idea during the completion of a tourism and national park management degree at Lincoln University. Nigel is an avid hunter and fly fisherman, striving for professionalism and safety at all times, and thus allowing clients to relax and enjoy the experience around them. Nigel oversees the organisation of your hunt and ensure the quality of your entire New Zealand experience.

Donald Greig - Game Estate, Heli Accessed & Free Range Hunt Guide Donald is a New Zealand legend in his own right. Respectably involved in New Zealand’s pioneering days of helicopter wild deer culling and live recovery, Donald has lived and breathed wild animals ever since. Having successfully guided thousands of clients onto ‘animals of a life time’, Donald is well respected globally as a top New Zealand hunting guide. Donald specialises in helicopter access free range hunting and game estate hunts. We are pleased to have Donald representing the Backcountry New Zealand hunting guides team.

He has worked in ‘personal development training through outdoor experiential learning’ courses and as an instructor in kayaking, rock climbing, and mountain craft. Having transitioned these strong life skills into his love of hunting and guiding, John has a great ability to read people, their needs, and communicate clearly to achieve common goals. John developed his hunting guiding skills with a number of years in another hunting outfitting operator and we are pleased to have him join the team.

HUNTING AREAS

High Peak Station - Game Estate Hunt Area High Peak Game Estate is one of the larger private animal reserves in the South Pacific, encompassing an area of 4500 acres. It is one of few that carries the Game Estate Accreditation standard in New Zealand. The estate’s native grasslands, forest filled valleys and clear mountain streams provide the ideal environment for populations of wild animals. Situated in an isolated river valley, the estate has no public access, a factor crucial to its privacy and exclusive usage. Operated by the Guild Family since 1973, James & Anna, their daughter Amelia and sons Hamish & Simon welcome hunters to their property. Numerous record book trophies have been successfully hunted, with the various species including: Red stag, Wapiti bulls, Fallow bucks, Wild Boar, Arapawa Rams and Pacific goats.

East Coast & West Coast Glacial River Valleys—Wilderness Hunt Areas Situated close to Backcountry New Zealand’s base, these vast glacial valleys typify the South Island’s east and west coasts river systems that drain from the main divide known as the Southern Alps. The high alpine basins are home to the Himalayan Tahr and agile alpine Chamois, with the native mountain beech forest, podocarp forests and broadleaf gullies sheltering Red and Fallow deer populations. Backcountry New Zealand guides understand these valleys intimately and utilize them as some of the many options available for the Wilderness Hunt free range packages.

SOUTH ISLAND HUNT SPECIES

Red Deer — (Cervus elaphus) Red deer were introduced into New Zealand in 1850 from Europe. They have established themselves so well that New Zealand red stags are renowned for being the largest in the world! Mature male Red Deer are known as stags and are renowned for their wariness and instinctual ability to disappear into cover at the slightest detection of a danger. It is a large antlered species similar to the elk. Standing 1.5m (5 ft) tall at the shoulders and a body weight of around 181kg (400 lb). The South Island has continued for some time to provide world records in red stag trophy sizes.

Himalayan Tahr — (Hemitragus jemlahicus) The Himalayan Tahr is considered a premier trophy. A Bull Tahr in full winter coat standing proudly upon a rocky spur is probably the most magnificent sight a hunter in New Zealand is ever likely to see. Originally from the Himalayas, New Zealand is now the only place in the world where a hunter can obtain a Tahr trophy in the wild. Hunting Tahr is physically the most difficult, the hunter is often required to ascend up to 3000 feet each day, with the alpine areas being steep and craggy. The Tahr rest in the highest crags during the day and venturing down in the morning and evening to feed. The best time of the year is May through July (during the rut).

Fallow Deer - (Dama dama) Described as a graceful and dainty slender deer, the adult fallow buck is easily distinguished by his palmated antlers. Limited numbers of Fallow are found in the wild in New Zealand, while higher numbers exist on the Game Estates. Fallow deer have a range of hide colors, from black, pure white, menil or spotted. With their antler formations and the differing color skins they make a wonderful trophy for the wall. The 'Rut" for fallow deer begins in April and extends to the end of May.

Chamois - (Rupicapra rupicapra ) Chamois are agile, alert mountain antelope, originally introduced to New Zealand from the Swiss / Austrian Alps 90 years ago. They inhabit similar terrain to that of the Tahr, however they choose to live at lower elevations and in more hospita-ble terrain. They are often found in sub alpine scrub just above tree line. The Chamois has exceptional eyesight (believed to be equivalent to six power binocu-lars) and are very alert, requiring good stalking skills in order to get close to them.

Elk or Wapiti - (Cervus canadenis) It was in 1905 that the only liberation of North American Elk took place, in the inhospitable Fiordland National Park, in the southwestern corner of the South Island. Unfortunately, the herd expansion was halted by the topography and the fast encroaching Red deer herds with which they interbred. Because there are so few pure Elk left in the wilds of Fiordland, the only hunt we offer is a ‘game estate’ hunt in the South Island. The Elk bugle starts in March and continues through April.

Page 19: New Zealand Professional Hunting Outfitter Trips

SOUTH ISLAND HUNT SPECIES

Pere David Deer - (Elaphurus davidianus) Unique among deer, the antlers have a main branched anterior segment, with the tines extending backwards. Another strange feature of the antlers is that there may be two pairs per year. These unique deer are occasionally available in very small numbers per year on one of Backcountry New Zealand’s trophy blocks, and prefer marshy habitat within gullies and tarn areas.

Wild Boar - (Sus scrofa) Captain James Cook introduced European wild boar into New Zealand in 1773. These pigs adapted very readily to the mild climate and quickly spread throughout the country dwelling in many of the native forests. Wild boars come in a variety of colors and are hardy and strong animals weighing up to 136kg (300 lb). Their ivory tusks can be up to 75mm (3 inches) long. With their keen eyesight and sense of smell, the wild pig provides a real challenge to hunters.

Ducks & Geese Duck shooting season is between May to July. Canada goose, mallard and paradise ducks are the most common. Paradise shelducks are popular among hunters, with a shooting season between February and September and a limit of 15 per day. The North Canterbury region provides the best Canadian geese shooting in New Zealand. Canada geese are to be found in great numbers around the high county of this region. Shooting of geese is available all year round.

Arapawa Ram - The Arapawa was introduced by explorer, Captain Cook. They make an unique and attractive trophy, with many rams being taken by hunters each year. Arapawa rams are one of the only black-faced big horn sheep, and are unique to New Zealand. A mature ram will have a full curl if not two, and makes a handsome trophy. They vary in color from white, black, to a combination of white and black. The hunting season for this trophy is year-round.

Pacific Goat - Pacific goats are widespread throughout New Zealand, and come in every conceivable size, shape and color. Trophy billies can be hard to find and a hunt can be an exciting addition to a safari. We have areas with large numbers, making them ideal for bow hunters.

HUNTING & EQUIPMENT INFO

Temperature Temperature varies a lot in New Zealand in a short space of time. “Four seasons in one day” is a common phrase in New Zealand when talking about the weather. The chart below has average highs and lows for each month.

Arms Permits

Under New Zealand law, visiting hunters bringing their own firearms into New Zealand must obtain a firearms Tourist Licence from New Zealand Police at the International airport on their arrival. It is a simple formality which costs $25.00 N.Z. The licence being valid for 12 months. Please note pistols, side arms and automatic weapons are not permitted in New Zealand. If a visiting hunter chooses to use our firearms no permit is required, the guides licence is deemed sufficient. Visiting hunters are allowed to bring a maximum of 90 rounds of ammunition into the country. For more information please view the New Zealand police website: www.police.govt.nz/service/firearms/importing.html

Clothing and Footwear

Hunting clothes should be of woollen or thermal material for warmth and body protection. Most New Zealand hunters dress in “layers” that are easy to take on and off as the temperature requires. Gore-Tex or equivalent hunting jackets are recommended for both rain and wind protection. Rigid boots with a leather outer shell are the most commonly used boot, the most important thing is good grip on the sole. We recommend hunters all carry a small day pack with enough room for a torch, hunting jacket, 1 litre of water, lunch and ammo (your hunting guide will carry the rest). An equipment checklist will be sent on confirmation of your hunt.

Equipment

A .270 to .300 calibre scoped rifle is recommended as is 40 rounds of appropriate ammunition and quality binoculars(10x is the most common). Should you require, a loan rifle or shotgun and ammunition is available free of charge. A good quality headlamp is also recommended for walking back to base after dark. A full and detailed equipment and info list will be sent to you upon conformation of your hunt with us. Backcountry guides love to use and recommend rifles from ‘Christensen Arms’, clothing from ‘Stoney Creek’ & optics from Leupold:

TESTIMONIALS & REFEREES

Referees:

… It was recently one of my life’s most treasured moments to travel to New Zealand with my son Jake and experience some ‘first class’ hunting and service together… a very special father and son time indeed! The package that you and your team put together for us was pure quality from start to finish, and something the two of us will never forget. The hunting was outstanding, and we particularly enjoyed the changing landscapes as we moved on to target each differing species. The mounted trophies and the memories that come with these, take pride of place on the new rock wall at home. Thanks to all the team. Regards - Tony Abbott - GM Mule Deer Foundation - Mapleton, UT … I just wanted to say ‘gidday’ and tell you what an awesome hunting experience we all had. We were pushed, beyond what we could do by ourselves. Thanks to the "boys". Hard to believe that it came and went so quickly. But it gives us something to plan and look forward to, Hope all is well and give my best to the "boys". God Bless! - Tom Gilman - Benicia, CA … I wish the dictionary had words to describe my recent hunting trip with you, it was beyond my wildest dreams. You surpassed all my expectations of what an outfitter should be like… an organized tour beyond my belief! I had a great guide who knew the animals so well I was starting to wonder if he was half Red Stag himself. Every day we were greeted with million dollar views, and at the end of it I took home a great and rewarding trophy. Can’t wait to come again. - Dave Pearson - Portland, OR … Backcountry New Zealand is a wonderful organisation! The knowledge, opportunities and overall friendliness exceeded my expectations. All of the activities were well planned. I had a great vacation and look forward to returning - Heidi Koster - Tahoe, NV … I would just like to thank you for the great hunt that I went on through your company! My first time in New Zealand I took your wilderness hunt and shot 13 animals! You could definitely call it a bag full! My guide was great! Very good at locating animals and preparing the final stalk. The thing about the hunt I liked the most was being able to travel around and see your country and culture. With the wilderness hunt the sky's the limit. Thanks again for the great time and see you in 08! - Clint Shears - Jackson, MI ...Hey guys! Thanks for an incredible hunt down there. It really was a blast!! You guys took great care of us and everything about the hunt was professional, organized, and a lot of fun. Steve says in the next couple of years he will most likely re -book. Thank you for the great hunting experience to New Zealand and I look forward to a very long relationship with Backcountry New Zealand… - John Mogle - President - www.christensenarms.com Dear Nigel, In May of 2007 I booked a Tahr and Chamois hunt with Back Country New Zealand. From the time of our arrival in Christchurch, to our hunting destination, everything was handled professionally and efficiently. I have hunted Alaska, Canada, most of the Western United States, Mexico and Africa. My experience with Backcountry New Zealand would compare with the best that I have experienced in any of my hunting adventures. The staff from Backcountry who guided me on my hunt were hard working, professional and most importantly, they were genuine good guys and fun to be with. New Zealand as a country has to be seen to be believed, scenic beyond my wildest dreams and one of the best kept secrets in the hunting world. Best to you all at Backcountry and again many thanks for an unforgettable experience. Please feel free to use me as a reference anytime! Sincerely, - Dennis Hughes- Danville, California

TESTIMONIALS & REFEREES

Referees: … Nigel, the entire team are great. My expectations were exceeded in all areas!!!! These guys are friendly & professional… Backcountry New Zealand; why would I hunt with anyone else!!! - John Koster - Tahoe, CA … We can’t wait to share our stories with everyone at home. New Zealand is so laid back and the people are really great. It was a once in a lifetime, and truly amazing experience. Great staff, absolutely gorgeous country and the animals were AMAZING. We especially loved listening to the Red stags and Fallow bucks during their rut. Thanks so much for the perfect New Zealand experience! - Brad & Elene Hess - Nth Ogden, UT … I have told my friends and the hunters who come to my place, what a wonderful time I had visiting your country. As an amateur biologist, I found the indigenous flora and fauna of NZ new and fascinating… I had a fabulous time in NZ and all of the time there was important to me... but the time I had learning from you on my red stag hunt, was the icing on the cake! As we drove the trails and glassed the hills you taught me not just about red stag hunting but about the love you have for your job and the pride you take in making it a life time experience for the hunter. I shall never forget how after spotting the stag, you explained that we should move, to be two hills away before taking our final hike. We ended our hike expertly out of sight and wind from our quarry and in position for the perfect shot, waiting for the handsome stag to reveled himself. Your Carbon Neutral Holiday A first for a New Zealand hunting & fishing guiding outfitter! From 2010 clients visiting us for a multi day holiday from anywhere in the world can be rest assured that they will be doing so in a manner that is carbon neutral or better! We have generously calculated the carbon footprint of your travel and stay with us for a week long hunting or fishing experience in New Zealand and have calculated how many New Zealand native trees we need to plant to offset your travel. Not only will we purchase the trees and provide the land, but we have some great helpers to plant them!

You can now book with us and have the peace of mind that your holiday will not only be better than carbon neutral, but will benefit the planet and New Zealand's biodiversity. These are the environments we love to recreate within, we should ensure their future as best we can. Backcountry New Zealand is working towards achieving its 'Carbon Zero status' through a measure, manage and mitigate process.
