FESTIVAL HISTORYThe Devonport Food, Wine and Music Festival started in 1990 as a community fund raising project of the Rotary Club of Devonport. Initially the event was a free festival with monies raised through selling to attendees a festival glass from which they would be able to purchase and drink their wine. The 1990s saw the festival experience a peak in its fundraising with numbers attending regularly exceeding 12,000 over the two days. Many a Rotarian and patron will remember the times of celebrating the fine wine and food while sitting down to leisurely enjoying a local jazz band or music group.

However over the years costs increased, and sponsorship became harder to source and regulatory changes forced the organizers to fence Windsor Reserve and look to charge a door price. The changing leisure and entertainment market in Auckland also impacted on the festival, in a positive way, with higher quality music acts both local and international becoming a regular feature of the festival.

In 2010 the festival starts a new period under the ownership and management of B3 Events Limited (B3). The management of B3 are local Devonport residents and Rotarians who have in the past been heavily involved in the organizing and running of the festival. B3 looks to continue the festival with its focus on providing great entertainment, wine and food while raising funds for the Rotary Club of Devonport Charitable Trust.

The main objective of Rotary is service in the community, in the workplace, and throughout the world. Rotarians develop community service projects that address many of today's most critical issues, such as children at risk, poverty and hunger, the environment, illiteracy, and violence. They also support programs for youth, educational opportunities and international exchanges for students, teachers, and other professionals, and vocational and career development. The Rotary motto is Service Above Self.

Music Festival

Nathan KingEver since picking up a guitar at the age of 15 in his home town of Christchurch, New Zealand, Nathan King has had a passion and a gift for writing great songs. Not just any old 'get-your-name-on-the-radio one-hit-wonder' kind of songs, but we're talking about crafted anthems, feel good summer soundtracks, down to earth melodies that just ooze a certain something that makes one want to fall in love - or maybe even break up. Quite simply, these are tunes to make rock-n-roll memories to...

Only five years after strumming that first chord, Nathan found his songs and exceptional voice at the heart of multi-platinum, award-winning success as his band Zed saw their debut album shoot to number one. Mr King found himself honing his stagecraft in front of thousands of fans in Australasia touring with Robbie Williams and Coldplay and in the US and Europe with the likes of The Calling, Ash and Seal - all thanks to those great songs and teenage years spent devoted to the remarkable music of bands like U2, Simon & Garfunkel and The Beach Boys.

Drawing on this wide array of influences and experience, and having recently returned from a two-year stint based in London honing his skills, performing and traveling, Nathan finds himself ready with a brand new album…

Dave McArtney & the Pink FlamingosIn 1980 the band Dave McArtney and the Pink Flamingos formed out of the ashes of two hugely successful Kiwi Bands Dragon and Hello Sailor.

The bands debut Album in 1981 took out every major award at the NZ music awards and became a big summer hit later that year. After 2 more albums, an EP and a switch from Polygram to CBS with ‘The Catch’ album in 1984 the band went their separate ways, when Dave decided to pursue a solo career in the UK and Europe.

Dave is probably best known for his solo career as one of the country’s most prominent singer-songwriters throughout the eighties with the Pink Flamingos, formed with the late Paul Hewson of Dragon fame – and as guitarist and co-songwriter with Graham Brazier in the legendary Ponsonby band Hello Sailor.

Dave has been twice nominated for the APRA Silver Scroll (1981 & 1995) and 5 awards at the 1981 Recording Industry Awards, for the album Dave McArtney and the Pink Flamingos, including Group of the Year, Album of the Year and Best Male vocalist.

Gareth Thomas & BandGareth Thomas penned the the “sure-fire” pop hits of new Zealand Band Goodshirt. The single “Sophie” reached number one on the national singles charts in 2003 while songs “Buck it up” and “Cement” topped the Rock radio network in 2004. Glowing reviews and awards from both mainstream and indie institutions followed, album sales reached gold and platinum and the album was released internationally.

Since Goodshirt Gareth Thomas has worked with a range of artists including Bic Runga, Goldenhorse, Sarah Brown, Steve Abel, Dave Yetton and Annabel Fay.

He is currently completing a solo album due for release at the end of this year
