Welcome to the first of three very special brochures celebrating 100 years of the Palace Theatre! In July 1920 businesswoman Emily Blagg built this stunning venue and this year we’re honouring its decades-long history as the hub of entertainment in Newark, marking this big birthday with a fantastic programme of shows and special events.
We’ve brought back some of your favourite shows of recent years from local stars like Steve Steinman and Mercury to the popular hits of Fleetwood Mac and Dominic Kirwan. Plus we’ve amped up the showbiz glitz with appearances from Strictly’s Vincent Simone and Ian Waite, John Challis and Turin Brakes and stunning productions like The Cinder Path, Menopause The Musical 2, Rapunzel – A Tangled Musical Adventure and more!
To make this year sparkle even more than ever before, there’ll be a series of special events making the most of the theatre’s history, ambience and variety, all leading up to an incredible celebration Gala weekend in the summer. CENTENARY CELEBRATIONS
For our centenary year, we are excited to introduce a new legacy pot, the ‘Our Past, Your Future’ Fund, offering scholarships and funding to local people who aspire to careers in the arts. We’re launching this fund as a celebration of, and a thank you to, our local community. The Palace Theatre will be committing proceeds to the fund from special centenary events as well as collecting contributions from visitors. The world’s foremost tribute to this iconic band, The ELO Experience have been bringing the music of Jeff Lynne and The Electric Light Orchestra to the stage for over 12 years. With a sensational string section, a stunning light show and large screen projection to further enhance the experience, this incredible show accurately reproduces the songs and sounds of ELO live.
The estimable London 4-piece Turin Brakes present their first fully stripped back acoustic UK tour since 2002, with support from singer/songwriter Kevin Pearce. One of the finest indie bands of the last two decades, they’ll be playing songs spanning their 20 year career - including seven top 40 singles and six top 40 albums with sales over a million worldwide.
Young patrons are invited to attend these audition days, offering the chance to take to our stage in an exciting big-name musical production, to be announced soon! The Newark Twinning Association is once again pleased to be working with Newark and Sherwood Concert Band to put on this crowd-pleasing event in the wonderful Palace Theatre in its centenary year. The Last Night of the Proms will be a rousing evening of music including Land of Hope and Glory, Pomp and Circumstance and Jerusalem.

To celebrate the Palace Theatre’s 100 year anniversary, the National Civil War Centre is opening its doors to Palace Theatre visitors in January 2020. All you need to do is present your show tickets at the National Civil War Centre welcome desk or provide the name of the show you’ve booked to receive free day passes for up to two people. The National Civil War Centre is open every day in January (excluding New Year’s Day) from 10am-4pm.

Appletongate is a one way system accessed via Barnby Gate. There is limited free parking on street outside the theatre after 6pm and two pay and display car parks located less than 5 minutes away (Appletongate, NG24 1JR and London Road, NG24 1TN).

Café Nineteen20 at the Palace Theatre opens every day from 10am-4pm for a delicious selection of hot and cold drinks, panini, soups, sandwiches, cakes and more.
The bar opens at least one hour before every performance, selling a range of alcoholic and soft drinks, sweets, snacks and ice creams. Patrons are encouraged to order interval drinks before the show to reduce their waiting time in the break.
The Palace’s beautiful Byron Room is also available to hire for private receptions for large groups at certain performances; enquiries should be made via the Box Office in the first instance.
