NEWARK MIDLAND THEATRE 13
On December 20, 1928, just a few days before Christmas, the sidewalks of the Newark, Ohio Town
Square were filled with shoppers in search of last-minute gifts. Amidst all the hustle and bustle, on
North Park Place there was a line of people standing in place for hours, or, according to an account
in the local paper, paying young boys to stand there for them. They braved the elements so that
they could be the first to get a glimpse of Newark’s newest entertainment establishment.
In 1978, The Midland Theatre was forced to closed. A power outage during the “Blizzard of ‘78”
caused the boilers to freeze and crack, sealing the theatre’s fate.
For 14 years, The Midland stood unused. The splendor of the architecture had faded, and
deterioration continued unabated. Talk arose of demolishing the once-proud theatre, now an
eyesore and a hazard. All that remained was the shell of the former glory...and the memories.
In 1992, Dave Longaberger and The Longaberger Company purchased The Midland Theatre. As a
tribute to Dave’s vision, The Longaberger Company undertook an 8-year, $8.5 million renovation
and restoration of the theatre. Upon completion, The Longaberger Company had no desire to
operate the theatre, instead entrusting the property to The Newark Midland Theatre Association,
a non-profit organization.

Foghat - April 22, 2017
Foghat’s live performances show why the band is still around today and why
they will be able to keep on rockin’ as long as they want. This band truly is
timeless. Constant touring is part of their DNA and the band just loves to
play. Their live show is as intense as ever with the incredible energy and
musicianship that one would expect and hope for from a seasoned band with
such a long musical history and they are bringing their fans along for the ride.
In 2016 the band released a great new album called “Under the Influence”
which they had a terrific time recording along with some special guests and
old friends.
Foghat fans are everywhere and these days their audience consists of all ages.
From the young kids who play Guitar Hero III and know all of the lyrics to
‘Slow Ride’, to the Dazed & Confused generation of 30-40 somethings and the
‘boomers’ who bought Foghat’s first vinyl or 8 track! Looking out at the audience
and seeing all of the generations rockin’ to Foghat is very gratifying to the band.
According to lead singer Charlie Huhn, “the band just wants to make sure that
after every show, they are all convinced that they just got rocked, from the
second we start the first song to the end of the show.”
Formed in 1971 when Lonesome Dave Peverett and Roger Earl left the British
blues-rock band, Savoy Brown, Foghat has earned eight Gold records, one
Platinum record and one Double-Platinum record. They continue to release new
music every few years, and the guys have never stopped touring and recording
although there have been several ups and downs and changes over the years.
They sadly lost Lonesome Dave Peverett in 2000 and Rod Price in 2005, but
Roger Earl kept banging & kicking to keep Foghat’s musical legacy going.

Liz Longley - May 5, 2017Stage Door Cabaret Series Sponsored by Huntington Bank
Longley confides with you as though you’re sitting on the sofa with her in a
talk that’s intimate and vulnerable. And now, the Berklee College of Music
graduate and award-winning songwriter is set to share her confessional songs
with listeners on her self-titled album—her first after signing with Sugar Hill
Records in December 2014.
While Longley’s songs and vocals invite complimentary comparisons to
Shawn Colvin, Paula Cole and Nanci Griffith—all artists she’s supported live—
her latest effort spotlights a style all her own. Her voice and tone, touched with
the slightest of country inflections, pours out like clean, crystalline water.
Longley first felt the magic while growing up outside of Philadelphia. A song
she wrote in ninth grade—her first ever—earned a standing ovation when she
performed it for the student body: “I was unprepared for that sort of reaction
and it was life-changing moment,” she says. “That’s when I knew it was what I
wanted to do with my life.”
The track record she’s assembled since shows just how much Longley grew
into her dream. She’s taken home top prizes at some of the most prestigious
songwriting competitions in the country, including the BMI John Lennon
Songwriting Scholarship Competition, the International Acoustic Music
Awards and the Rocky Mountain Folk Fest Songwriting Competition.
But it all traces straight back to Longley’s first song. She says she’ll continue
to open her soul in the service of her art because that’s what matters most
to her. “Every time I get into these
songs they resonate with me
because they’re based on something
I went through,” she says of the new
collection. “I hope they connect with
people and that they’ll help with
whatever they’ve gone through.
That’s what music does for me, and I
hope I can do that for someone else.”

The Marshall Tucker Band - June 2, 2017
In the early fall of 1973, The Marshall Tucker Band was still a young and hungry group out to prove themselves every time they hit the stage. “We were a bunch of young guys who didn’t know any boundaries,” says founding member and longtime lead singer Doug Gray. As it turned out, the collective talents of The Marshall Tucker Band took them very far indeed.
Years of rigorous tour schedules earned the band the respect of critics and countless dedicated fans. With hit singles like “Heard It In a Love Song,” “Fire On The Mountain,” “Can’t You See,” and “Take The Highway,” The Marshall Tucker Band earned seven gold and three platinum albums while they were on the Capricorn Records label. During the 90’s, the MTB scored four hit singles on Billboard’s country chart and one on Billboard’s gospel chart. Their music has also been featured on the soundtracks of movies such as Smokey and the Bandit, Blow, The Pursuit of D.B. Cooper, Shipwrecked, Crank 2, Don’t Mess with Zohan, Stop Loss, Swing Vote, Taking Chance and many others as well as many TV Shows. “The buying public never really cared whether we were country or rock & roll” says Gray. “They called us a Southern rock band, but we have always played everything from country, jazz, blues, rock & roll and all things in-between. As we’ve become older,” Gray grins, eyes twinkling, “our Southern heritage seems to come out even more. But, no matter how old we get, we can still rock your socks off.” Gray also notes that people have gotten “married and buried” to classic MTB songs like “Desert Skies” and “Can’t You See”. After 40 years, The Marshall Tucker Band continues to be played on classic rock and country radio, and they have never stopped touring.
CMT (Country Music Television) named the MTB’s “Can’t You See” the #4 Greatest Southern Rock Song. The MTB’s debut album, The Marshall Tucker Band, reigns as Gibson Guitar’s #5 Greatest Southern Rock Album. UltimateClassicRock.com crowned the MTB’s “Can’t You See” as the #1 Southern Rock Song and in 2013, GRAMMY® Magazine named the group’s logo as one of the most distinctive and iconic brands in music.

Melissa Etheridge - June 16, 2017M.E. Live Performing with a Full BandApplause: A Benefit for The Midland Theatre’s Educational and Outreach Programs
Melissa Etheridge stormed onto the American rock scene in 1988 with the
release of her critically acclaimed self-titled debut album, which led to
an appearance on the 1989 Grammy Awards show. For several years, her
popularity grew around such memorable originals as “Bring Me Some Water,”
“No Souvenirs” and “Ain’t It Heavy,” for which she won a Grammy® in 1992.
Etheridge hit her commercial and artistic stride with her fourth album, Yes
I Am (1993). The collection featured the massive hits, “I’m the Only One” and
“Come to My Window,” a searing song of longing that brought Etheridge
her second Grammy® Award for Best Female Rock Performance. In 1995,
Etheridge issued her highest charting album, Your Little Secret, which was
distinguished by the hit single, “I Want to Come Over.” Her astounding success
that year led to Etheridge receiving the Songwriter of the Year honor at the
ASCAP Pop Awards in 1996.
Known for her confessional lyrics and raspy, smoky vocals, Etheridge has
remained one of America’s favorite female singer-songwriters for more than
two decades. As a performer and songwriter, Etheridge has shown herself to
be an artist who has never allowed “inconvenient truths” to keep her down.

NEWARK MIDLAND THEATRE V
Boz Scaggs - June 25, 2017
“I’m at a point where I’m having a lot of fun with music, more than ever,” Boz
Scaggs says about his spellbinding new album, A Fool to Care. “It’s like I’m just
going wherever I want to go with it.”
You can hear that sense of fun, as well as that ability and willingness to
wander in any musical direction throughout the album’s twelve tracks. The
inspirational heart of those songs lies in the sounds of Texas, Louisiana and
Oklahoma that played such a vital role in shaping Scaggs’ musical sensibility,
but they venture forth boldly from there, ranging from the seductive New
Orleans rumble of the title track
to the wry social commentary of
“Hell to Pay” and a heartbreakingly
wistful interpretation of The Band’s
“Whispering Pines.” As he did on his
most recent previous album, Memphis
(2013), Scaggs worked with producer
Steve Jordan and a telepathic core
band consisting of Jordan on drums,
Willie Weeks on bass, Ray Parker,
Jr. on rhythm guitar and Jim Cox on
keyboards. “Steve works on a high
energy level,” Scaggs says of his prized
collaborator. “It’s relaxed and easy, but
also very highly charged. His direction
is laser-focused, and his playing is
intense. It’s a whirlwind and he’s a
strong leader, but it’s also lovely and
loose and cool. That’s all a comfort to
me. I’ve produced myself and I feel
pretty solid in the studio, but it’s really
nice for me not to have to do anything
but help select the material and be free
to be a singer and a guitar player.”

IN THE ARTS IN THE ARTS
ELECTRIC NATURAL GAS PROPANE
Art serves as a very important function in our community, an outlet for self-expression while contributing to a beautiful society. People need beautiful things to look at, experience, and enjoy everyday. Because art is a form of the human condition, the closest way to bring this to view is through arts and theater.
The Energy Cooperative is working hard to provide a better quality of life for our community, our members. That’s the cooperative difference.
