NEWCASTLE
NORTHERN IRELAND (17 SEPTEMBER 2009)
Bill & Nola (English) brought us and John (Nigerian) to Newcastle during our free time at the orientation
Newcastle is a small seaside resort in County Down at the base of SlieveDonard, one of the Mourne Mountains
Slieve Donard is the highest mountain in Northern Ireland
The Newcastle Presbyterian Church was founded in 1839 & has been in its present location since 1909
It is built with Mournegranite which was used to make paving stones in many cities, including London & New York
Mourne granite is also used to make the base of the 9/11 memorial in New York
It was low tide when we were there
The houses along the coastal road
This visually stimulating piece of art, ‘Global Journeys,’ reflects the land, sea, & sky, and depicts the migratory return of the Atlantic salmon (the base) to this area
Apparently, Newcastle is a place where people come to drink coffee & eat ice-cream
Mikael & Anna are a Finnish couple studying at BBC

Newcastle—a place for retirement? You will see many elderly folks as you walk around the town
