After her mind-blowing 2014 Australian tour, powerhouse vocalist Beth Hart will be returning to Australian shores to turn the art of singing into an out-of-body experience - she is simply world class and boasts A-list collaborations with the likes of Jeff Beck, Slash, Buddy Guy and Joe Bonamassa.

Hart has ridden incredible highs and heart-breaking lows in the past, but these days she’s reaching new career heights including her nomination for a Blues Music Award in the best contemporary blues female artist in 2014 and a Grammy nomination with Joe Bonamassa in 2014 for their album Seesaw, which went number one on the Billboard blues album chart, as did their most recent release Live In Amsterdam.

Her most recent album Bang Bang Boom Boom reached number 3 on the Bill-board blues album chart. Beth is currently working on a new solo album which is set to be released early 2015, so expect to hear some new material at this show.

The thing that struck this humble wag, upon listening to the once Queen of Pop’s 13th record, was the fact that for an album that is supposed to be chock full of club-oriented dance tunes - it is a surprisingly layered, thoughtful and introspective re-cord making Rebel Heart easily Madonna’s most consistent work in years.

There’s no denying that the once-trail-blazing Madonna has become a little passe in recent years with the likes of Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus and even Peaches shocking or twerking their way down Madonna’s well-worn path. But this time around, you get the sense that this is a fact that Madonna is starting to embrace especially in the title track with the line “I’ve outgrown my past and I’ve shed my skin”.

While not the best album in the cata-logue, Rebel Heart certainly brings a whole new element to the Madonna party and is well worth a listen.

This Tarantino/Grindhouse-esque flick is an absolute thrill ride and one of the last places you’d expect to see Mel Gibson. Gibson stars as The Driver - a criminal who pulls off a heist. His getaway goes south of the border when a car chase lands him in a hard-core Mexican prison community known as “El Pueblito.” His only chance of survival rests with a 10-year-old boy.

While this story has been done to death, this film brings a few interesting tricks to the hackneyed canon. It follows Vlad Tepes (Luke Evans) and his struggle to protect his family and people from Otto-man sultan Mehmed (Dominic Cooper), whose empire has put Vlad’s homeland in danger of being conquered. Vlad is helped by a man (Charles Dance) who grants him the powers to defeat his enemy.

Sydney-based acoustic punks The Bottlers are currently chasing the proverbial footy along the East Coast with their Over the Back Fence tour and will be wrapping things up at the Hamil-ton Station this weekend.

The Bottlers are a hard-playing, nine-piece, all acoustic folk punk band that draws inspiration from not only the traditionally folk-fuelled rural reaches

of the nation but also its cityscapes and suburban streets with a solid tip of the hat to the folk, punk and folk punk pioneers that have traipsed and trekked the trails well before them.

Catch The Bottlers alongside Sydney’s The Button Collective, skate punk nihil-ists Coffin and Newcastle alt. country heroes Adeline Pines at the Hamilton Station Hotel on Saturday March 21.

The power of Presley, the seduc-tion of Sedaka , the magic of Manilow, the cool of Sinatra, the King of Vegas Wayne Newton, the passion of Tom Jones and the glitz of Liberace (to name a few) will be the order of the day when the entertainment extravaganza that is Vegas Royale comes to Wallsend Diggers this weekend.

Featuring the formidable talents of

multiple MO and ACE-award winners Adam Scicluna and Neil Hanson, this show pretty much guarantees a night of outstanding vocal performances, and a cavalcade of comedy from a unique collection of characters and much-loved favourites.

Catch Vegas Royale at Wallsend Diggers on Friday March 20 from 7pm. Tickets are $12.

When it comes to influential bands of the ‘90s, there are few who hold a candle to Nirvana and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Nirvana, with such iconic tracks as Smells Like Teen Spirit, All Apologies, Heart Shaped Box and Lithium shook up the world of popular music in a way that hadn’t been seen since the Sex Pistols and inspired a million kids to pick up a guitar and start wailing. The Red Hot Chili Peppers and their funk/punk/thrash/soul sound has permeated

almost every genre imaginable thanks to the likes of Give It Away, Under The Bridge, Suck My Kiss and Californication.

Edgeworth Tavern will be jumping this weekend when The Australian Nirvana (pictured) and the Australian Red Hot Chili Peppers shows take to the stage in what promises to be a night of jaw-droppingly accurate renditions of some no fooling 90s indie classics.

Catch this double header tribute night at Edgeworth Sport and Rec Club on Friday, March 20.

After spending the last few years beguiling the nation with a string of eclectic and highly-acclaimed projects - Songs That Made Me, Love

Song Circus, Songbook and Southern Skies with Karen Shaupp - Katie Noonan is back in band mode for her latest EP, Peace Is My Drug and the powerhouse singer couldn’t be happier.

“It’s so exciting to be back among the band dynamic again and we certainly can’t wait to kick off the tour,” she told TE.

The new EP, Peace is My Drug (featuring the formidable talents of former Captains bandmates Declan Kelly and Stu Hunter and Melbourne guitarist Ben Edgar), features two new tracks - the titular track based around the Michael Leunig poem Peace (with Leunig writing a second verse specifically for the song) and Cloud of Home along with a few tantalising remixes and will serve as a teaser for the upcoming album.

Noonan said she decided to go down a bit

of a different path for the album - taking to Pledge Music to get it funded and while she said she was reluctant at first to take the album down the crowdfunding route - it proved to be an ultimately rewarding experience.

“It has been brilliant,” she said. “We exceeded our goal in just two days

which, for me, is a huge validation. I was reluctant at first, but I’m really happy with how it turned out.

“My next album feels like a return to me. This is the first truly Katie album with all new material in a long time. All in all, I’m really proud of these songs and so excited to be able to share them.”

Another highlight for Noonan was working with iconic cartoonist and poet Leunig who, she revealed to TE, would be working on a full-length album with her trio Elixir.

“One of the best things about meeting your heroes is when they exceed your expectations and Michael certainly did that,” she said.

“The sign of a great artist is the ability to say volumes in just a few words and there are few people other than Michael who do that so well.”

STEPHEN BISSET

Since springing into the national consciousness with her outfit George, Noonan certainly hasn’t been an artist to paint herself into a corner - taking on several solo, duo, ensemble and cross-platform projects spanning myriad genres. For Noonan, though, this is all just a part of the lifelong process that is songwriting.

“Any great artist is forever a student of the art form and music is just limitless - so exposing yourself to various challenges,” she said.

“But I’d like to think that, over time I, a little like Michael Leunig, have become a little better at saying more with a lot less.”

Catch Katie Noonan at Lizotte’s on Sunday, March 22.

STEPHEN BISSETto withdraw all of my money from an ATM for three days,” he said.

“From there I ended up in a Mexican jail and all I can say about that is, you don’t do so well as a white boy in a Mexican jail, but thankfully, that’s all over with now - the band is back on track and looking forward to the future.”

For the uninitiated, Guttermouth have been cutting a snotty swathe through the music world since their debut Full Length long player in 1992 with their visceral brand of melodic punk in the vein of Lagwagon and NOFX and, for Adkins, ten albums down the track and it’s still as exciting as it was back in the day.

“It’s just one of those things that’s in the blood for me, punk rock,” he said.

“It’s pretty hard for me to imagine doing anything else.”

As a special treat for Aussie fans, Adkins said the plan was to release some new mate-rial that will be an Australian exclusive.

“Yeah we’re staying with the guys from Bedlam Records and we’ll be spending, like six or seven days in the studio, so there’ll definitely be some new material for you guys and who knows, maybe we’ll get a whole album out of it as well which would be great.”

Catch Guttermouth at the SmallBallroom on Sunday, April 12.

Despite the fact that their last sojourn Down Under, in 2013, was meant to be their last ever, thanks to some (by their own admis-

sion) less-than-stellar, overly-inebriated performances, US punk stalwarts Gutter-mouth are heading back our way, and frontman Mark Adkins promised to more than make up for the last tour.

“Yeah, man, we’ll be totally taking the bull by the horns on this one - we’ve got some great fans in Australia and we want

to show them a good time,” Adkins told TE.

In the two years since Guttermouth’s last tour, quite a bit of water has flowed under Adkins’ bridge. After giving up music, he found himself destitute and eventually winding up in a Mexican prison.

In a turn that could be ripped out of a Hollywood script, Adkins eventually had to borrow money from a corrupt Mexican policeman to call drummer Alex Flamsteed to bail him out.

“Because I was used to playing in the band, I found it hard to relate to that whole 9-5 thing so, to cut a long story short, I ended up in Mexico where a cop forced me

SUMMERLAND KINGS

WINDALE GATESHEAD

BOWLING CLUB

FRIDAY, MARCH 20

The Summerland Kings are a versatile five-piece hard-working band based on the Central Coast who perform regularly at venues on the Central Coast and in the Hunter Region. These guys possess a unique style and combination of talents that makes them an entertaining, good time live band with a solid fan base on the club/pub and festival circuit with their mix of classic to obscure covers and their own exciting original songs.

The band consists of lead vocalist/musi-cian and award-winning country artist Ross McGregor, Bob Morton, son of the legendary

Tex Morton (harmonica/percussion/vocals), Malcolm Wood (vocals/lead guitar/pedal steel/songwriter), Dave Rowe (drums/vocals) and Alan Buchanan on (bass/vocals) from Whiskey River who joined the Kings in 2012.

The band recorded and released an independent EP in 2008, Fade Away, with four original songs, which gained them good country radio airplay.

In 2011 Ross McGregor released his solo country album, Here To Forget, produced by Rob Wilson, which generated more than it’s fair share of positive press.

Despite spending 18 months and giving 640 perfor-mances in the cut-throat world of Off-Broadway - to rave reviews - for

Drumstruck creator Warren Lieberman, Australian audiences still trump the New York theatre crowd.

“Our time on Broadway was just incred-ible,” he told TE

“We had the second-longest running show in the period and it’s definitely something that I’m extremely proud of, but the audiences in America are vastly different to Australia. In New York, for example, they’ll come along and enjoy the show and then go home, whereas in Australia, we have fans waiting sitting out the front of our hotel or waiting for us before and after the show - it’s just fantastic.”

The brainchild of Lieberman and director Kathy-Jo Ross, Drumstruck is a heady and unique blend of South African music and culture, ornate sets, dazzling costumes, interweaved with West Afri-

can rhythms and a decidedly communal bent.

“There will be a drum for everyone in the audience and they will be able to play along with what is going on onstage,” Lieberman said.

“This really creates a sense of connect-edness with the cast and with each other - the idea of everyone taking part in a shared, communal experience and learning together - the complete opposite of watching television or going to see a movie - it’s a real endorphin rush and the audience really does help to create the show.”

Since premiering in Johannesburg in 2002, the production has played to sold-out venues around the globe and played in front of the likes of Nelson Mandela, Bill Clinton, Queen Elizabeth and Elton John, although it’s origins were quite humble.

“I saw a friend of mine playing drums at a party and I asked him to come to my house and teach me,” Lieberman said.

“After a while it kind of became a regular thing and more and more people started turning up to learn drums and just play with each other - it got to the point where

This’ll putdrums on seats

MUSIC

STEPHEN BISSET

I started getting 200 people in my lounge room every night and the police said it was getting a bit much so, I opened up the first Drum Café [since developed by Lieberman into a global corporate team-building and entertainment program] in 1996 and from there, Drumstruck was born.”

So what is it about the power of rhythm that has played such an integral part in the lives of humans since, well, the dawn of time?

“That’s something I’ve been trying to figure out for 20 years,” Lieberman laughed.

“But, on a sophisticated level, drum-ming produces endorphins in the brain and, on a simple level, it’s about the connection to the heartbeat and to the emotional side of the brain.”

May Star RestaurantRedhead Bowling Club43A Burns StreetRedheadP: 4942 6022

If you’re looking for a dining experi-ence that is light on the hip pocket but packs a mammoth flavour punch with an eclectic menu of Australian favourites and Asian

delights, then you should definitely make a bee-line to the May Star Restaurant at Redhead Bowling Club.

My first experience at the May Star, on Saturday night, was a truly international affair with our gracious hosts supplying my dining partner and I with dishes from Australia, China and Indonesia - all absolute winners.

First cab off the rank was that pub/club staple - the chicken schnitzel and without one word of hyperbole, this was one of the best examples I had tasted in quite some time. A healthy portion of perfectly cooked chicken was enveloped in a deli-cious golden crumb while the addition of a slightly sweet gravy took the chicken to the next level. Accompanied by some deliciously crispy yet fluffy chips and a zesty garden salad, you’d have to travel pretty far to find a schnitzel that was better than this. Next up was a sizzling seafood combination which was a morish extravaganza of, yes, seafood and an aural and visual treat, to boot. Generous portions of prawns, squid, scallops and

firm white fish and crisp vegetables were doused in a beautifully balanced garlic sauce. It can be difficult to achieve even cooking in a dish like this but each morsel of seafood had been cooked perfectly.

Lastly my dining partner and I sampled the Indonesian flavours of Mie Goreng and, what a way to round off the evening. The rich, almost smokey fried noodles packed with all manner of tasty morsels were augmented by a perfect spice balance with just a hint of heat - adding an intriguing depth of flavour. Fresh and vibrant vegetables and plenty of BBQ pork make this an excellent main dish or an alternative to the more common fried rice accompaniment.

D espite sharing stages with such heavy hitters as Luciano Pavarotti, Eric Clapton, James

Brown, Joe Cocker, Miles Davis and Andrea Bocelli, for soul songstress Lisa Hunt it’s all about looking ahead.

“I’ve been lucky enough to perform with some great artists like Pavarotti and Miles Davis but, as a singer, you’re next gig should always be the most important - there’s no point resting on your laurels,” Hunt told TE.

With that in mind, local punters are sure to witness Hunt give 110 per cent when she takes to the stage at Caves Beach Hotel this weekend.

“It’s going to be a big, bold show full of Motown, soul, R&B, disco and funk - there’s seven of us on stage and it’s quite an international affair - four Aussies, a British percussionist and an Italian keyboard player.”

Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York and currently living in Byron Bay, Hunt began singing in the great African American tradition of the gospel church

with the likes of Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, Stevie Wonder and Whitney Houston providing her formative musical touchstones. She has since gone on to contribute to countless tracks, both as a singer and songwriter and has sold more than one million records.

“Strange for someone you’ve probably never heard of until now, but hey, that’s show biz,” Hunt said in her bio.

Aside from performing with a litany of greats she has also worked with some pretty impressive producers such as Jelly-bean Benitez (Madonna), Tony C (Whit-ney Houston) and Frank Farion (Milli Vanilli, Hot Chocolate) but, for Hunt, it is the buzz of live performance that ignites her musical passions the most.

“When you’re on stage you are truly in the moment,” she said.

“You get to experience people’s reac-tions immediately and it is quite hard to replicate the adrenaline rush you feel walking on stage when you’re in a studio. Being on stage is pretty hard to beat.”

Catch Lisa Hunt at Caves Beach Hotel on Friday, March 20. Tickets are just $5 and includes a free glass of beer, wine or soft drink.

Chappie (M)EVENT CINEMAS, GLENDALE //STEPHEN BISSET [1/5]

MOVIE REVIEWSThat Sugar Film (PG)TOWER CINEMAS, NEWCASTLE //AMELIA PARROTT [3/5]

When it comes to dodging cinematic bullets, Hugh Jackman has had a pretty good run with very few, if any, turkeys cropping up in this filmography.

Until now.Chappie is set in a dystopian

not-too-distant-future where a mechanised police force oppres-sively control the population. The ambitious designer of these crime-fighters, Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire) creates a fully opera-tional sentient model that can think for itself - Chappie. Before too long, Chappie is captured by a gang of miscreants who

reprogram Chappie for their own nefarious purposes. Enter rival engineer Vincent (a gloriously mulleted, yet, ironically possessing one of the most overworked Australian accents since Meryl Streep signed on for Evil Angels, Hugh Jackman) who, with the help of his own assault robot, Moose, vow to put an end to Chappie.

While still imbued with the same unique visual style that director Neil Blomkamp brought to his previous films District 9 and Elysium, that’s about where the positives end. This is a film that borrows so heavily from myriad sci-fi films and literature that it becomes lost in a mire of hackneyed tropes at the expense of giving us any characters to care about.

The documentary directorial debut for Aussie actor Damon Gameau offers a uniquely Australian spin on the sugar debate.

Gameau subjects himself to dramatic diet swap, switching out his usual clean-eating regime for a manic existence fuelled by 40 teaspoons of sugar a day, in an effort to highlight the adverse effect excessive sugar consumption can have on the human body.

But unlike, Morgan Spurlock in 2004’s

Supersize Me, Gamaeu shys away from gorging on junk foods, soft drink and lollies, instead clocking up his daily sugar quota through perceived “healthy” products - fat free yogurts, muesli and fruit juice. The resulting decline in Gameau’s energy and physique is both rapid and alarming.

While there’s not much new information here for those who are already well-acquainted sugar vs. fat conundrum, the use of Aussie products and a case study in an Aboriginal community in the Northern Territory make for interesting local viewing.

I f you like your tunes with more than just a hint of bold brass and swinging swagger,

then you’d do well to pick up a copy of local outfit Mitch Capone and the Wise Guys debut long player Bad Blood.

Featuring the dulcet tones of Capone on vocals and backed up expertly by the tried and tested talents of Mark Tinson on guitar, Rob Banks on bass, Steve “Mac” McLennan on drums and a formidable horn section of Andy Firth, Leigh Sherringham and John Kellaway, the Wise Guys revel in the revisionist sound of 1950s swing and rockabilly but, with Bad Blood, bring something decidedly fresh to the table - fusing big band swing arrange-ments with dirty rockabilly and boogie to create something that Capone has dubbed swingbilly.

“I’m really happy with how it all came out,” Capone told TE.

“It’s been quite a number of years in the making, actually. It all started when my step-dad, Mark Tinson, needed to get some music happening for a TAFE project and he had a few ideas and I had a whole heap of lyrics, so I ended up co-writing five out of the nine tracks on the album with him.”

Capone said that while the next hit-out for the band would be in four-piece mode at the Last Chance Dance at the Kurri Nostalgia Festival, he added that an official album launch date had been secured at Lizotte’s on July 24 that will feature the band in all their bold, brassy glory.

“We wanted to pull out all the stops for the launch so it will be a massive eight-piece extrava-ganza.”

Catch Mitch Capone and the Wise Guys at the Kurri Nostalgia Festival’s Last Chance Dance at Weston Workers Club on Sunday, March 29. Bad Blood is available via mitchcapone.bandcamp.com

MUSIC

The last time TE caught up with Californian-based singer-songwriter Steve Poltz, he ‘fessed up to his career being a front for a

highly successful global Walter White-esque adventure.

“The truth of the matter is the whole music thing is a cover for a huge meth operation that I’ve been running for quite some time now - I make it all and my tour manager sells it - it’s quite a profitable little operation,” he said back in 2013.

However, as is the case with these high-risk operations, Poltz - never one to let the truth get in the way of a good story, has been forced to diversify into safer territory.

“That didn’t end well,” he said.“Now, I just sell vegan bacon rolls.” Poltz will be making a welcome return

to Newcastle this weekend as part of his fourteenth trip Down Under. His love affair with Australia is well docu-mented, with Poltz releasing an album in 1999 with the decidedly Antipodean title of Noineen Noiny Noin and it seems the feeling is mutual.

“I’m not really sure, but it just seems to go well,” Poltz said of his relationship with Oz.

“I think Australians like to have a good laugh and they don’t take themselves too seriously. So it must be a natural fit.”

Aside from diversifying into the world of vegan cooking, there has been quite an amount of water go under his bridge since the last Australian visit. While on stage at the end of last year, Poltz suffered what was later discovered to be two mini sub-acute strokes.

“It was crazy - I was onstage in Wilm-ington, Delaware and I went blind,” he said.

“Then, when my vision came back, I lost the ability to read. Then, I went blind again, only it was even worse. So, I went to the hospital and they told me I had a stroke and I was in hospital for about five nights - now, everything feels pretty good. I’m lucky”

For the uninitiated, Poltz parlayed early success with his band the Rugburns into a career that has seen him become one of the most revered song-writers of his generation thanks to his lighthearted approach and some truly virtuosic fretwork. He has collaborated with the likes of Jewel [Poltz co-wrote Jewell’s runaway smash hit You Were Meant For Me], Glenn Tilbrook and Mojo Nixon, and Neil Young counts one of Poltz’s albums (Answering Machine) as his favourite album of all time.

His seemingly lighthearted approach belies a fingerstyle guitar technique that has axe boffins salivating and a way of delivering lyrics that range from heartbreakingly sincere to utterly hilari-ous - from topics as diverse as murder, divorce, Johnny Cash, sewing machines and transvestites.

Once the Australian tour wraps up, Poltz said some sailing might be in order.

“I’m going to build a raft out of popsi-cle sticks and float on forever,” he said.

“Float on and on and on and on like Huckleberry Finn and smile at all the serious crap is going in and know that I’m a survivor of the highest magnitude on a cliff overlooking the galaxy and I’ve got the keys to the power of the ignition of nutso magutso.”

Catch Steve Poltz at Lizottes on Satur-day, March 21.

O n the back of critically acclaimed seasons at the Sydney Festival and in Brisbane in 2014, the

Black Diggers will be coming to Newcas-tle for three special performances.

Directed by Queensland Theatre Company’s (QTC) Artistic Director, Wesley Enoch, and written by Tom Wright, Black Diggers celebrates the contribution of WWI Aboriginal Diggers, following their exceptional stories from their homelands to the battlefields of Gallipoli, Palestine and Flanders. An extraordinary all-male, all-Indigenous cast tells the story of these heroic men who were largely unrecognised by history.

QTC’s Wesley Enoch said Black Diggers is long overdue. Drawing upon new research and extensive consultation, the production reclaims a forgotten chapter of the story we tell ourselves about Australia’s wartime legacy, shying away from none of it.

“One hundred years ago, men all over the world enlisted to fight in WWI - including over a thousand Indigenous Australians,” said Enoch.

“When history has forgotten people they find ways of telling their stories. The history of conflict in this country goes hand-in-hand with stories of survival. Black Diggers is a collection of stories about the men who fought for this country and in this country. The war they faced was as much for recognition as it was for King and coun-try and their legacy can be seen in the reconciliation movement of today.”

Black Diggers is on at the Civic Thea-tre on Friday, March 20 (11am and 8pm) and Saturday, March 21 (8pm).

TE is giving you the chance to win a double pass to the show. To enter, email your name and contact details to [email protected] with “Black Diggers” in the subject line by 5pm on Friday, March 20.

A poignant reminder

Big Merv is coming to town

EVENT

G reat food, great beer and a decent natter. Sounds pretty inviting, right? Well that’s exactly what

the Squire’s Maiden in Honeysuckle has planned when no-fooling cricketing legend and current reality TV darling Merv Hughes teams up with James Squire brewer Josh Staines for a special lunch, later this month.

Hosted by Mike Rabbitt, the lunch will give you the perfect opportunity to find out what it is about James Squire beers that make them so darn delicious as well as all of the low-down on the 2015 Cricket World Cup.

While there’s little denying that Hughes is one of the best-loved Aussie cricketers ever to step up to the crease, Staines - aside from limitless knowledge on all things

amber fluid, isn’t a tourist when it comes to the gentleman’s game. After working in a brewery for two years after high school, Staines took the leap to go and play cricket in England as a semi-pro, travelling the country and playing on the best pitches in England, making this pair a perfect fit.

Join Merv Hughes and Josh Staines at Squire’s Maiden on Thursday, March 26 from 12-3pm. Tickets are $100 per person and are available at the venue or by visit-ing thesquiresmaiden.com

TE is giving you the chance to win a double pass to this special event. To enter, simply email your name and contact details to [email protected] with ‘Merv’ in the subject line, by no later than Tuesday, March 24. Winners will be notified by phone.

DUE to a bit of a scheduling SNAFU, Jeff Martin’s solo show at Lizotte’s, will no longer happen this weekend.Never fear, though because Mr Martin will still be visiting Newcastle as part of his solo Returning To The Ocean at the

End national tour, with the revised date now Tuesday, March 31.As a treat for fans, Martin will also be selling a new 4-track EP that will only be available at the show. Catch Jeff Mar-tin at Lizotte’s on Tuesday, March 31.
