Fortnightly magazines such as ourselves share a key trait with those little packets of peanuts you get on airlines. No, not that they’re packed with a lot more goodness than you might expect (even though we are) but that opening them is by far the hardest job of all. But you’ve already done that now, so relax. Now regular readers will have to forgive our lack of introductions, as this time we’re extending our biggest welcome to the mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, grandparents, and labradoodles of our City’s graduating students. Make yourselves right at home, suspend your disbelief that they actually passed long enough to enjoy yourself, and let us help you find the perfect place to take the family for the traditional celebratory meal. Much like NE1 itself, there’s a whole host of wondrous things for you to discover within, so read on.

FROM TERRACE BBQ’S TO BIKES IN THE CITY CENTRE, THERE’S SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE THIS FORTNIGHT IN NE1

So far, how have Live’s 40th Birthday celebrations been going? It’s been a great year, Live Witness was a really wonderful promenade piece around our buildings and Tyne is a lovely play set around the river . Plus, we have two great new plays coming in the Autumn.

For those who might not have heard of it, what is Tyne? Tyne (#TynePlay) tells stories, unlocks history and showcases music all inspired by the river. It’s on until Saturday 20th July, so come and see it.

Who are the writers who have contributed? It’s written by Michael Chaplin (@MichaelChaplin2) but includes extracts about the river from other writers associated with Live Theatre like Sid Chaplin, Tom Hadaway, Alan Plater & Julia Darling.

What can you tell us about the music involved in it? Kathryn Tickell (@KathrynTickell), the musical director has chosen music inspired the river and re-arranged some traditional songs, there’s two songs kindly donated by Sting as well other well known songs about the river.

What else can we expect to see at Live this season? In the Autumn we are reviving one of our best known plays, Cooking with Elvis by Lee Hall. We’ve also got a new play called Wet House, a dark comedy set in a hostel for alcoholics by Paddy Campbell.

CAIT READ@LIVETHEATREWe create new plays, find & develop creative talent and use theatre to unlock the potential of young people. Currently talking about #TynePlay

Back in the 90’s when everything was all crimped hair, Spice Girls, and Baby G watches, the gay scene in Newcastle was restricted to only a handful of bars in and around the western edge of the City. But in the years since, the venues and attractions around Westmorland Road, Scotswood Road and Marlbrough have combined to form one of the strongest scenes in the entire region, now affectionately and famously dubbed ‘The Pink Triangle’.The highest concentration of bars currently resides on Scotswood Road, with the stylish @NE (pronounced “at one”) offering its clientèle a classy atmosphere and an equally as impressive cocktail menu; adjacent to the more let-your-hair-down approach of The Yard which, as well and catering for almost any type of night out, also boasts one of the City’s most popular regular karaoke

evenings. Neil Diamond – Sweet Caroline, since you asked.Following the road down brings you to Switch, which with its sleek interior for chilling out and relaxing, and its elaborate dancefloor for unleashing your dance-mat skills on an unsuspecting public, is a firm a firm favourite with younger people. It

even doubles as a grill bar on weekends and resides underneath Loft, a nightclub-come-late bar that offers a more intimate setting for the evenings that run into the small hours.Next door to Switch, we have one of Newcastle’s best kept secrets with the music and cabaret extravaganza that is Bank Bar. Incredibly popular with all ages and inclinations, Bank is home to the greatest mix of personalities and larger-than-life experiences you’ll find on a night out, so successful they’ve recently celebrated their 15th birthday. It’s not all bars mind you, and just a short pop down the road from these two sits The Pride Suite, one of Newcastle’s most successful projects, its first LGBT community centre. Set up last year as a versatile and inclusive space, it’s already hosted markets, movie nights and art installations, and its cafe downstairs caters for hungry

NEWCASTLE GAY SCENEvisitors until midnight. If the prospect of cabaret does anything for you, Boulevard on Churchill Street is now in the capable hands of Betty Legs Diamond and offers a Broadway night like no other with dancers, table service and seasonal themed shows running throughout the year. There’s also the notoriously relaxing Number 52 Sauna (one of two in the city with The H20 located on Blandford Street), which provides steam and jacuzzi facilities as well as food, drinks, and some handy free wi-fi.Arguably the stand out establishment on the street is The Eagle Bar, Newcastle’s own ‘Amsterdam-style’ venue that, whilst not exactly where you’d go to kick back and unwind, offers a uniquely dark and brooding atmosphere specially catering for the leather, denim and otherwise uniformed crowd. Worlds away from the last bar on the street Secrets, which has instead become popular for its chilled-out atmosphere and delicious food. The influx of leisure venues in Times

Square has long been considered a key reason for the increase in popularity of the gay scene, with the Blonde Barrel being the latest of these to open its doors after the highly popular Twist was taken over and given a radical makeover. Now incorporating a massive selection of real ales, a huge open plan space, and a few booths which provide a more intimate setting to try the venues now famous menu of food, it’s fast established itself as one of the most modern (albeit with a retro feel) bars in the city. Flanked by the also relatively new Rusty’s Bar, named after legendary Rusty who runs the venue herself and featuring a host of impressive cabaret and other live entertainment, it’s gathering pace as one of the funnest late-night bars in Newcastle.

Despite all the expansion and influx of new locations, the crown jewel of this part of town remains Powerhouse. Just down the road from the The Dog and Gossip on Westmorland Road, it’s Newcastle’s longest standing nightclub at over 20 years old and holds the latest license in the City - so regardless of what sort of evening you were planning, it’s where you’ll most likely find yourself come the end of the night. It boasts four floors playing all the latest pop tunes as well as a huge smoking terrace, and boasts the likes of JLS and Olly Murs amongst its glittering history of guest appearances.Whilst we can’t yet boast the one of

the largest gay scenes, Newcastle can comfortably stake a claim as having one of the busiest and most engaged. This year the annual Pride Festival celebrates its sixth year, and hopes to draw as many as 30,000 people into Leazes Park on Saturday 20th July for what remains the biggest celebration of LGBT culture in the North East. After a giant midday parade from the Civic Centre, the free event takes place all day in Exhibition Park with health stalls, a funfair, a market, and the X-Factor’s Amelia Lily headlining an impressive festival stage.Newcastle’s renowned across the world for its friendly atmosphere and welcoming aura of enjoyment, and no part of town is a better example of this than The Pink Triangle. Now that it’s expanded its repertoire from bars and nightclubs to include cafes,

event spaces, and some of the tastiest grub in town, now’s the best time ever to be a part of it whatever your persuasion. www.northern-pride.com

Cocktail shakers at the ready, as the art of cocktail mixology enters a new level when the City raises its glasses to toast the first ever NE1 Cocktail Week from Monday 15th to Sunday

21st July. Cocktail Lovers will be able to enjoy a mouth-watering array of cocktails at three fantastic value price points – just £3, £5 and £7 at a number of different venues.

Like NE1’s highly successful Restaurant Week which encourages diners to try out new restaurants with fixed price menus, Cocktail Week offers the spirit enthusiasts amongst you the opportunity to sample some fantastic drinks at a fraction of their usual price, and discover some new bars in the search for the perfect libation.Among the many venues already raising their shakers and crushing their ice in preparation are Fat Buddha, Babucho, Pasqualinos, Revolution and Livello, with many more set to be announced in the coming weeks. It doesn't stop there though, as the tiny folding umbrella in this mojito of mixology comes in the form of a series of cocktail masterclasses being organised throughout the city, which will allow enthusiasts to learn the art of creating their perfect cocktail at home.

Driving is just something that’s never appealed to me, probably because my dad doesn’t drive, I grew up on the image “I’ll just meet someone who drives”. Not only does my dad not drive but when we would inevitably get lost on family trips he wouldn’t get the map out and help, he would wave at the people in the street. We had now driven up and down three times until my poor mother was forced to ask “What are you doing?” he would then reply with a big grin on his face “Well, we’ve been down this street so many times we’re friends with the locals”. I get my irritating behaviour from him. I then met someone who drives, she liked her music only in the car. With the Glee Soundtrack and Michael Bublé blasting, Warren Zevon didn’t stand a chance. I was told “You can have your music when you drive the car”. So there you go, I took my driving test FOUR TIMES and passed to spite my ex-girlfriend. I only use that licence for when I get ID’d for buying beer, ironically, to take on the train with me. Carl Hutchinson brings All The Rage to The Stand, Newcastle on Sunday 14th July

With the school term grinding to a shuddering halt, your only hope for the retention of your own sanity lies in finding enough activities to keep the little ones sufficiently entertained until September. Thankfully, there’s plenty on in the City to keep both their minds and their hands busy over the coming week and months with some terrific long-running exhibitions and one-off events. If you’re looking for a way to scare them into tidying their rooms, why not get transported back to the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods at Life Science Centre. Age of the Dinosaur, a Natural History Museum exhibition, gives you a glimpse of life as it was 65 million years ago and is running every day throughout the summer. Or for something with a few less teeth, The Discovery Museum hosts a Teddy Bear’s tea party on Thursday 25th July where there will be cake decorating, face painting, and even a teddy hunt. Meanwhile, over at Seven Stories on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th, there’s an entire weekend dedicated to the Vikings in celebration of the return to the region of the Lindisfarne gospels. From craft activities to legendary story telling, they’ll learn all about how to become a hero the hard way.

KEEP THE LITTLE ONES SUFFICIENTLY ENTERTAINED

I have been using public transport for three or four years now, to get to and from work. It wasn’t through any altruistic environmental concerns, or to help reduce congestion on the nation’s 15th century road network. It was more to do with finance, as my calculations revealed that it was cheaper to run Elton John than a car. Public transport has its critics, me mainly, and my subliminal rage towards those imbeciles who regale everyone with their iPod choices. That said, it does have its positives, it allows me to drink huge quantities of alcohol to blot out a wretched Newcastle performance for example, and has got me back into my reading habit.I love books, real ones, not those electronic tablet books which to me is the equivalent of fancying a great big steak, and then eating the menu it’s printed on. Indeed, if bookshops had drinks licenses I’d probably move in.There is something about walking around a bookshop. The staff are different, they let you browse, unlike other retailers who stalk you like over-protective parents, and they’re the most knowledgeable. You get the feeling they actually enjoy being there. The joy of coming across a book you’d forgotten about cannot be replicated by whizzing your finger over a computer screen, however clever these tablet things are. “You can store hundreds of books on it,” I was breathlessly told by one sales assistant “Ah yes,” I replied, “but you can’t prop a wobbly table up with it if it’s rubbish.” I have to consider my luck with matters electronic as well, with a real book there’s no chance of: “Symphony Mammaria stepped slowly out the pool, pausing briefly to brush water from her.............PLEASE CHARGE YOUR TABLET, YOU HAVE NO BATTERY.”A bookshelf also adds a little gravitas to the family home, so much more aesthetic than a silicon slab flashing and beeping away in the corner, or am I confusing it with Jordan’s autobiography?blackadderboy@ yahoo.co.uk

Shani Rhys James: The Rivalry Of Flowers. The relationship of the figure within its domestic space has been a key motif in Shani Rhys James’ work and in her current series of paintings her figures compete with the overblown floral wallpaper for dominance. In ‘Skinny Rib’, the figure’s head stands in permanence, her body seems to be caught in the process of creation. The figure, left almost transparent in places, leaves us wondering whether she is part of her opulent background or what is actually on show here; the interior scene, the oversize lilies or the figure itself? Sandra Blow. A pioneer of the British post-war abstract movement Sandra Blow’s work started in the radical atmosphere of the pre-Arte Povera movement under the influence of Alberto Burri, and she remained loyal to the language of abstraction throughout her career. Burri introduced her to paintings and assemblages created with sackcloth and ashes, the only materials available to him as a prisoner of war. Fuelled also by the Renaissance principles of geometry, light and scale, Blow set about treating form with its own innate reality and rejecting subject matter in terms of representation, “I can remember that extraordinary sense of shedding everything, of leaving all known tracks and then just looking for something that could be my own, of interpreting the actual structure of the painting, which seems to connect with abstract structure and space – and finding my own language in it!” University Gallery, Northumbria University, Sandyford Road, Newcastle. www.northumbria.ac.uk/universitygallery

Sacred Geometry: Faith, Trust And

Angelic Dust. Joshua Burbank creates his mixed media art from a studio in the Balearic Islands, a Mediterranean paradise that has been connected with hedonism and mystical spirituality for thousands of years. Joshua’s art begins as collage formed from clippings taken out of high-end lifestyle magazines. Using oil paints, he transforms the collages into epic vignettes inspired by the ‘fantasy art’ of the 1970s. The imaginary scenes retain references to our modern age, including contemporary make-up on the proud female figures who are his heroines. Wielding magical contraptions, vorpal blades and considerable presence these heroines embody the appeal, and potency, of emancipated modern womanhood. The Postcard – A Voyage Of Discovery. Curated by Gail-Nina Anderson. The postcard is the piece of mail we prop up on the mantelpiece or stick to the fridge door, usually more of a greeting than a message, a few words on the reverse of an image, a sign that someone is thinking of us. Every postcard also represents a moment of choice, encapsulating the process when we thought this particular image would be the one to send - the card we select for a particular recipient says a vast amount

ARTSacred Geometry: Faith, Trust And Angelic Dust. Until Saturday 20th July at The Outsiders, Newcastle Quayside. www.theoutsiders.net/exhibitions
