Newcomers Guide to the Westside of Vancouver www.kitshouse.org
Welcome to the Westside
I would like to extend a warm welcome to all of you who are new
to British Columbia and to the Westside of Vancouver. We hope
that you nd this resource guide to be useful full of inspiration &
information about your new community!
At Kits House, we create opportunities where neighbours can
gather together to learn, share and celebrate because we believe that these
opportunities create welcoming, safe and vibrant communities. We strive to
work alongside other organizations and businesses on the West side to createspaces where all people feel welcome.
The Newcomer Asset Mapping Project & this resource guide to the Westside
is one of those opportunities. Many people who come from many parts of the
world and now live and work in Vancouver have worked tirelessly over the
past year to create this outstanding resource - a resource that has both useful
information and sends a message of welcome. I would like to thank all those
who participated in this project by sharing their time and their skills through
dialogue, researching resources, translating information, editing and designingthis great resource.
As you settle into your new home, we encourage you to get involved in
your neighbourhood, say hi to those you pass on the street, invite new
neighbours for coffee, join groups or committees and of course visit your local
neighbourhood house to learn other ways to get connected We look forward
to meeting you!
Sincerely,
Catherine Leach,
Executive Director, Kitsilano Neighbourhood House

Kitsilano Neighbourhood House Newcomers Guide to the Westside of Vancouver
In the fall of 2009, over100 Westside newcomers
participated in dialogue
workshops to identify
community needs, strengths and
resources for newcomers on the
Westside of Vancouver. Information
collected was used to create
this Guide to the Westside for
newcomer community members,
organizations & government
agencies.
PROJECT GOALS:
Learn about the needs of
newcomers on the Westside
Help to build bridges and
support the needs of
newcomers
Share information aboutcommunity resources &
services
Create a hub of information
for newcomers on the Westside
Provide information in multiple
languages
NEWCOMER MAPPING
PROCESS:
The Newcomers Guide to theWestside has been produced by
and for newcomers on the Westside
of Vancouver in an effort to both
build community and develop
resources. Through the community
consultation process and nal
resource guide, the Newcomers
Mapping Project supports
community development throughmeaningful dialogue and resources
on topics that matter.
Newcomer dialogue sessions
used the Finding Home model
developed by Jessie Sutherland
(www.worldviewstrategies.com) to
discuss:
What creates a newcomer-
friendly community?
Why does belonging matter?
What community resources are
used by newcomers?
What are the unique needs of
newcomers to the Westside?
Funding for the Newcomers
Mapping Project is provided by the
Building Welcoming & InclusiveNeighbourhoods Initiative of the
Province of British Columbia.
About The Newcomer Dialogue &

Neighbourhood House, its participants, volunteers
