Their aim was to make a statement. And that’s exactly what they did at the the model for 36Hazeltonin Yorkville, a project designed by Alex Chapman of Chapman Design Group and overseen by KenZuckerman, president of Zinc Development. The team flaunted the site’s roomy spaces, which have acontemporary aesthetic that leaves an impression yet isn’t intimidating to potential buyers. “It’s veryhomey, it’s very inviting — and that’s what we were trying to accomplish,” Mr. Zuckerman says. “Wewere trying to demonstrate a lifestyle to people.” The space is also aspirational, so that buyers (manyof them here are downsizing empty nesters) could easily imagine switching from their traditionalhomes to this contemporary space. “We wanted something very clean and Euro-centric,” Mr. Chap-man says. Suites at 36Hazelton, by Zinc and Alterra Group, range in size from 1,200 to just over 4,600square feet and in price from $1.6-million to $12-million. The sales office is open daily from noon to 5p.m. For information, call 416-216-4717 or visit 36hazelton.com.

There’s no two ways aboutit — this kitchen is big. Makingthe most of its size, Mr. Chap-man chose three different cab-inet fronts: high-gloss woodlacquer, white lacquer and thesame back-painted glass as thebacksplash. Continuing thebacksplash material to the cab-inets just above carries the eyeup to make the backsplash lookbigger, without sacrificing cab-inet space.
The sheen of silver peeksthrough from inside, sur-rounded by clear glass in theseFlos pendant lights. They werechosen because they comple-ment the rest of the kitchen.“We wanted to bring in cleanlines and also have enough im-pact to complete the kitchen’sstory,”Mr. Chapman says.
While there’swooddetail-ing on three sides of the granite-topped island, Mr. Chapmandidn’t want it to look homogen-ous, so he styled one side inwhite with stainless steel ac-cents. “At this scale, if you keptthe materials all the same, wejust felt it would be too bland,”he says.
The bulk of this generousbuilt-in black shelving unit goesa long way in making an im-pression. It anchors the spaceand offers a place for accessor-ies that personalize the room.“We needed some kind of im-pact to give scale to such a bigroom,”Mr. Chapman says.
“It’s beautiful,”Mr. Zucker-man says of the TomDixon lightfixture he chose for the livingroom. The grand scale of thechandelier with its polishedchrome arms and enamel metalshades wouldn’t work just any-where. Mr. Chapman adds: “Youusually only see these in restau-rants. It’s not often you couldput this in your apartment.”
The charcoal grey-and-white custom rug has justenough pattern to add interest, without distracting from theliving room’s contemporary de-sign. The white border keeps itclean and contained. “It’s verytailored, with a linear pattern,”Mr. Chapman says.
