PH2 nationalpost.com NATIONAL POST, SATURDAY, JULY 9, 2011 Their aim was to make a statement. And that’s exactly what they did at the the model for 36Hazelton in Yorkville, a project designed by Alex Chapman of Chapman Design Group and overseen by Ken Zuckerman, president of Zinc Development. The team flaunted the site’s roomy spaces, which have a contemporary aesthetic that leaves an impression yet isn’t intimidating to potential buyers. “It’s very homey, it’s very inviting — and that’s what we were trying to accomplish,” Mr. Zuckerman says. “We were trying to demonstrate a lifestyle to people.” The space is also aspirational, so that buyers (many of them here are downsizing empty nesters) could easily imagine switching from their traditional homes to this contemporary space. “We wanted something very clean and Euro-centric,” Mr. Chap- man says. Suites at 36Hazelton, by Zinc and Alterra Group, range in size from 1,200 to just over 4,600 square feet and in price from $1.6-million to $12-million. The sales office is open daily from noon to 5 p.m. For information, call 416-216-4717 or visit 36hazelton.com. new condos Sophisticated style Discerning empty nesters will love 36Hazelton’s chic, yet inviting design By Lisa Van de Ven 1 2 3 4 5 6 1 There’s no two ways about it — this kitchen is big. Making the most of its size, Mr. Chap- man chose three different cab- inet fronts: high-gloss wood lacquer, white lacquer and the same back-painted glass as the backsplash. Continuing the backsplash material to the cab- inets just above carries the eye up to make the backsplash look bigger, without sacrificing cab- inet space. 2 The sheen of silver peeks through from inside, sur- rounded by clear glass in these Flos pendant lights. They were chosen because they comple- ment the rest of the kitchen. “We wanted to bring in clean lines and also have enough im- pact to complete the kitchen’s story,” Mr. Chapman says. 3 While there’s wood detail- ing on three sides of the granite- topped island, Mr. Chapman didn’t want it to look homogen- ous, so he styled one side in white with stainless steel ac- cents. “At this scale, if you kept the materials all the same, we just felt it would be too bland,” he says. 4 The bulk of this generous built-in black shelving unit goes a long way in making an im- pression. It anchors the space and offers a place for accessor- ies that personalize the room. “We needed some kind of im- pact to give scale to such a big room,” Mr. Chapman says. 5 “It’s beautiful,” Mr. Zucker- man says of the Tom Dixon light fixture he chose for the living room. The grand scale of the chandelier with its polished chrome arms and enamel metal shades wouldn’t work just any- where. Mr. Chapman adds: “You usually only see these in restau- rants. It’s not often you could put this in your apartment.” 6 The charcoal grey-and- white custom rug has just enough pattern to add interest, without distracting from the living room’s contemporary de- sign. The white border keeps it clean and contained. “It’s very tailored, with a linear pattern,” Mr. Chapman says.
