WELCOME . . . You are cordially invited to join us for a ROARING GOOD TIME as we celebrate our Newfoundlands at THE event of 2020, the Newfoundland Club of America’s National Specialty. The 2020 National Specialty Show Committee has an exciting week full of activities that combine a bit of the traditional while adding some new twists for everyone to enjoy!

Can’t relive the past? Of course you can! Be it the jazz music of the Cotton Club in Harlem or the elegance of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Great Gatsby, the spirit of the 1920’s was exuberant and indulgent, defying Prohibition to partake in new styles of fashion and dancing. A century later, our 2020 National Specialty hopes to capture the fun and excitement of the Roaring 20’s while celebrating all things Newf. We are pleased to offer a wide variety of events, for both our two and four legged guests!

New this year and sure to be on everyone’s dance card is a Best In Show movie night & fantasy dog show and a Late-Night Speakeasy hospitality suite with cocktails and dancing. “Who Done It?” is the question asked at Friday’s Auction. In the style of popular “murder mystery” dinners, we invite you to a spaghetti dinner where we will attempt to solve the mystery of who stole the diamond Newf pendant. Six special auction items will be offered exclusively at the Mystery Dinner. We have many other wonderful items available for online bids throughout the week culminating in awarding them with final bids open to everyone over complimentary desert. Guys and dolls, prepare yourselves for the epic finale of a spectacular week, a dinner dance with a live jazz band worthy of Jay Gatsby and friends!

On behalf of the 2020 National Specialty Show Committee, I hope you will join us as we revisit the fun of a bygone era. It promises to be the “bee’s knee’s”!

LOCATION . . . Frankenmuth is located in the “thumb” area of Michigan, just a few minutes off I-75 between Flint and Saginaw. Northbound traffic on I-75, use exit 136; southbound traffic on I-75, use exit 144. Directions to the Lodge from anywhere in the United States are located at www.bavarianinn.com.

THE SHOW SITE . . . Our home for the week’s festivities is the picturesque Bavarian Inn Lodge is nestled on the banks of the Cass River, adjacent to Heritage Park and the spacious Kern Pavilion. The Bavarian Inn Lodge features 354 rooms and suites, a seven- acre Family Fun Center (with five indoor pools, two whirlpools, children’s play area, mini golf, game room, exercise room, and Ratskeller Lounge), Oma’s Restaurant, and Lorelei Lounge. A short scenic walk over the covered bridge leads to Main Street, which is home to over 100 specialty shops and other well-known restaurants. The show rings, grooming, and vendors will be in Heritage Park the location of the Kern Pavilion, just across a bike path from the hotel. The distance from the Tower Entrance of the hotel (where all dogs must access the hotel) to the show ring in Heritage Park is just slightly over .2 a mile. You can see an aerial view of the hotel and show grounds on the NCA Specialty website. The Kern Pavilion affords the Newfoundland Specialty show flexibility in dealing with the potential weather challenges a late April/early May dog show presents. However, it is important that all fanciers work together, in the spirit of good sportsmanship, to make the logistics of this show site work.

Michigan’s climate in late April/early May is somewhat unpredictable so come prepared for all kinds of weather. The average high temperature for the week of the 2020 National Specialty is typically 62 degrees and the average low temperature is typically 40 degrees.

AIR TRAVEL & AIRPORT TRANSPORTATION . . . Nearby airports are Bishop (in Flint, MI) and Midland-Bay City-Saginaw (MBS – in Freeland, MI); each of which are located approximately 35 minutes from Frankenmuth. Detroit Western Metropolitan Airport (in Romulus, MI) is approximately 2 hours away. Exhibitors are encouraged to coordinate their airport arrival and departure times with other attendees so as to share travel arrangements from the airport to the show site.

A local car service will again have a full-sized van available that will accommodate dogs and crates. Contact Custom Transport, LLC of Saginaw, MI (ask for Karen) at 989-284-4484 to make transport arrangements.

HERITAGE PARK & KERN PAVILION AVAILABILITY . . . Frankenmuth Heritage Park and the Kern Pavilion (including the Reserved Grooming and Reserved Handler Parking areas) will be available for set-up after 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 26, 2020. The adjacent dog bathing area in the Bavarian Inn Lodge parking lot will be available at that time as well. During the week, the Kern Pavilion (grooming building) will be open daily from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. with the exception of Thursday evening when the building will be closed to grooming at 6:00 p.m. for the Top 20/10 celebration. Please note that dogs cannot be left in the Kern Pavilion overnight.

ACCOMODATIONS

BE A CONSIDERATE GUEST . . . In 2001, the Newfoundland National Specialty was the first dog show ever held at the Bavarian Inn Lodge/Heritage Park location. In fact, until that time, animals were not permitted in the hotel. The hotel managers took a chance when they permitted the NCA to hold our Specialty there, and we did not disappoint them. Because our guests took good care of the facilities, the NCA’s positive reputation paved the way for future dog shows for other breed clubs. Please do your part to uphold our reputation as considerate guests. Exercise your dogs in designated areas only and use the plastic bags and trash receptacles provided to facilitate clean up. We need everyone’s help in keeping the hotel rooms and show grounds, including grooming areas, clean. The Newfoundland Club of America and the Bavarian Inn Lodge reserve the right to enter locked hotel rooms if it believes a dog inside is in distress or left unattended and unsecured.

HOST HOTEL ROOM RESERVATIONS . . . We have reserved all 354 hotel rooms at the Bavarian Inn Lodge; but reservations must be mailed and may not be postmarked prior to January 6th, 2020. (Reservations postmarked prior to January 6th, 2020 will be returned.) Reservations must be made on the reservation Form on pages 17 - 18 and include a deposit of one night’s lodging. The reservation form may be duplicated as needed for multiple rooms.

Please be considerate when making reservations. Every year unneeded reservations are made, only to be cancelled at a later date, creating unnecessary confusion for potential guests and the hotel staff. (To avoid making duplicate reservations, those who preregistered at the 2019 National Specialty will receive confirmation of their room reservation prior to January 6th, 2020.) If you must cancel reservations, please do so as early as possible. Any reservation cancellations must occur on or before March 1, 2020 to receive a full refund.

RV CAMPING . . .

ON-SITE CAMPING . . . Frankenmuth city ordinances prohibit overnight camping except in commercial campgrounds. However, the City of Frankenmuth has again waived its “no overnight camping” rule for our 2020 Specialty and will permit a maximum of 20 self-contained RVs (motor homes and camping trailers only; no tents or pop-ups) to camp on-site in a designated area. The designated area is conveniently located behind the Kern Pavilion. There will be no electric hook-ups but a water source and a dump station are available nearby.

The limited number of on-site camping spaces must be reserved for the entire week (Sunday, April 26th —Saturday, May 2nd) at a cost of $400. In the event the designated camping area becomes unusable due to weather conditions, the camping fee will be refunded and RVs must move to a commercial campground as the City of Frankenmuth will not permit camping in any other area of the show grounds. To reserve an on-site camping space, complete the RV Reservation Form on page 19. Reservations for on-site camping will be accepted beginning with a January 6, 2020 postmark. Deadline: March 1, 2020 or earlier when available spots are filled. No refunds will be given after March 1, 2020 unless the spot is filled from a waiting list. Contact: Chuck Ialungo.

NEARBY CAMPING . . . Overnight camping, with full hookups, is available at the following nearby commercial campgrounds, which accept reservations up to a year in advance:

• Frankenmuth Jellystone Park (approximately 1/2 mile from the show site) • (989) 652-6668 www.frankenmuthjellystone.com.

• Pineridge RV Campground (approximately 5 miles from the show site) • (989)624-9029.

The Newfoundland Club of America reserves the right to forcibly enter parked vehicles (locked or unlocked) if it believes a dog inside is in distress.

GENERAL PARKING . . . The hotel parking lots have space to accommodate 1,800 vehicles providing ample parking for exhibitors and spectators. Exhibitors may drive to the grooming building to unload before parking their vehicles.

DAYTIME RV PARKING . . . For those camping in one of the commercial campgrounds and wishing to drive their RV to the show each day, a paved hotel parking lot south of the main Bavarian Inn Lodge entrance, will be reserved for daytime RV parking. The distance from the daytime RV parking lot to the show ring is about .3 mile. Those who utilize this option may wish to consider renting a golf cart. To help us plan the number of RV parking spaces needed, please complete the Form on page 19. Deadline: March 1, 2020. Contact: Chuck Ialungo.

RESERVED HANDLER PARKING . . . Reservations to reserve handler parking is available to any exhibitor with three (3) or more Newfoundlands ENTERED in conformation, obedience and/or rally. Parking will be in paved parking lots approximately 125 ft. from the show ring. Each spot will be 18’ X 18’. The cost is $75. There will be a limited number of larger spots, 18’ x 36’, to accommodate larger handler vehicles such as box trucks that are over 18’, at a cost of $120 each. RVs are not permitted to park in the Handler Parking Area. Generators may not run during the quiet hours of 10:00 P.M. — 6:00 AM. To reserve a spot, fill out and return the Form on page 20. Deadline: reservation/cancellation, March 1, 2020. Contact: Dejah Petsch.

The Newfoundland Club of America reserves the right to forcibly enter parked vehicles (locked or unlocked) if it believes a dog inside is in distress.

GOLF CARTS . . . For your convenience, golf carts are available for rent by reservation. The cost for the week is $250 for a 2-passenger cart and $325 for a 4-passenger cart. They can be checked out in the RV Camping Area behind the Kern Pavilion beginning Sunday, April 26th, and they must be returned to a designated area in the hotel parking lot no later than Saturday, May 2nd, immediately following Best of Breed. Before reserving a cart, please be advised that they may be used only within the show site on driveways and hard surfaces and must be parked in designated areas. They may not be driven into town or on the park lawns. These are Frankenmuth regulations, and violators will be subject to AKC Discipline Procedures.
