NCCG and Dynamic will be launching a campaign to raise awareness
of the costly issue of Medicine Waste on Monday 26th May 2014.
We hope that you will join us by working together to ensure efficient
use of NHS resources.

A report by the Department of Health (2010) estimates that unused medicines
cost the NHS around £300 million every year, with an estimated £110 million
worth of medicine returned to pharmacies, £90 million worth of unused
prescriptions being stored in homes and £50 million worth of medicines disposed
of by Care Homes.
These startling figures don't even take into account the cost to patients' health if
medicines are not being correctly taken. If medicine is left unused, this could
lead to worsening symptoms and extra treatments that could have been avoided.

Insight cont…
The 2010 report also estimates a potential future saving of around £500 million
(of extra value) which could be generated in just five therapeutic areas alone:
• Asthma
• Diabetes
• high blood pressure
• vascular disease
• schizophrenia
While the report concluded that there are no ‘systemic failures’, feedback from
stakeholders, patient groups and research might suggest otherwise…..

Why are medicines wasted?
Sometimes patients receive medicines they don't actually use, or use only
occasionally. This means that they can lose out on the intended health benefits
of their prescription. The reasons why patients don't take all their medication
can vary and audits have shown that around half of all the medication returned
had not even been opened. This means that patients are ordering and receiving
medication that they don't even start to use.
By reducing the amount of medicines being wasted each year, we could
increase the available funding for other desperately needed health services.

Tackling the problem
The NHS has been tasked with making £20 bn of efficiency savings by 2015 while
‘continuing to defend and promote the highest levels of care’ in a tough economic climate.
Tackling medicine waste is an effective way of doing this. Prescribed medicines account for
a considerable percentage of the NHS budget. They are the most frequent healthcare
intervention and the NHS spends £13.8 billion per year on them.
The intention of this campaign is to change the attitudes and behaviours of people across
Newham by:
– encouraging and support better use of prescribed medicines
– reducing the amount of unused / partially used medicines and free up valuable
resources which can be invested in front line services
– improving patient safety

Doctors and Pharmacists
The support of healthcare professionals, such as GPs and Pharmacists and, of
course, practice, hospital and pharmacy staff who interact with the target group
(patients on repeat prescriptions) on a daily basis, is fundamental
Patients
Those primarily over the age of 55 who are on free repeat prescriptions and for
a variety of reasons, order some medicines they never actually use.

Community Engagement
Three community engagement events will
be taking place during the campaign.
Two fully trained Medicine Waste
Community Engagement staff will be on
hand to raise awareness of medicine waste
and the safety risk implications directly with
the general public.
A semi-mobile display unit will be provided
which will be situated within pre-agreed
venues in NCCG area, once permissions
are granted.
The venue is to be confirmed in the next
week.

The Patient Evaluation
Each community pharmacy will
receive 20 patient questionnaires.
These help to inform NCCG of the
awareness and outreach the
medicine waste campaign had
with patients.
All questionnaires will be
anonymous.

Each community pharmacy will have the chance to enter a competition to win a luxury
hamper.
All this requires is for your pharmacy to create an eye catching display with the
materials and help communicate the key campaign messages:
– Only order what you need
– Wasted medicines are a safety risk
– Ask your pharmacists about your medicines
– Return wasted or unused medicines to your pharmacy for safe disposal
Entries should be in the form of a photo(s) of your display.
A poster will be sent as part of your material pack, with instruction about the hamper
competition.
Remember to have fun when creating your display.

Suffolk
Suffolk PCT was consistently prescribing at a higher rate than the national average before running the
Medicine Waste campaign. However, this rate dropped to well below the national average during the
November 2007-January 2008 campaign period.
