23rd of the month prior

From the Pastor’s Desk

Autumn is upon us, back to school for teachers and students, a

sense of new beginnings in the air--ah, the rhythms of life! Our

church is experiencing the same sort of dynamic with new

pastors, yet much remains the same as we build on treasured

traditions while opening ourselves to the movement of the Holy

Spirit in this place. The Women’s Bible Study on Thursday

mornings is back from our summer hiatus, the McKinleyville

Choir is resuming their practice at the church, as is the

Children’s Bell Choir. We are hosting the Pedal 4 Protein event

at our church on September 20th and planning to host another

McKinleyville Arts night the third Friday in October. Lots of

renewed activity we are all looking forward to!

In the midst of preparing this e-newsletter, Stan informed me

yesterday that our annual Corn Feed was to be scheduled for

September 13th, an after church potluck, and that I was to

inform Al and Shirley Bird right away. I immediately panicked.

“But that is the date already scheduled for the Session meeting

and the Deacons...who decides…?” Stan just smiled at me and

calmly explained that any other time would be too soon or too

late for the corn, then chuckled as he watched me anxiously try

to figure out how I was going to break the news to Judy and

Sally that we had to re-schedule our meetings…Looking at

Stan’s smiling face, I was reminded:

Take a deep breath, live in the present moment. Jesus tells us

“My grace is sufficient for thee”

Thank you, Stan, for your “ministry of presence”…After all, in

the larger scheme of things, what does it matter if we change a

meeting?

Speaking of new beginnings, Lynn recently interviewed Dr. John Lundwall for Access

Humboldt, on the nature of religion and myth as it relates to oral and literate cosmologies. Dr.

Lundwall worshipped with us a few weeks ago and wrote how much he enjoyed our church and

the richness of our philosophical discussions. He appreciated being part of a faith community

that doesn’t shy away from difficult questions. We hope to share Dr. Lundwall’s interview with

you sometime in the near future, as Lynn hopes to make this the first of many programs to be

featured on Access Humboldt.

Throughout the summer, many of us were able to take wonderful vacations, and rejuvenate

ourselves for the ministries that await us. There was also much violence and death these past

three months—more shootings in theatres, a church Bible study, and even reporters on

camera! People are seemingly lost in this culture of violence, looking for a sense of meaning in

their lives, a place to belong. So, as we pause this Labor Day weekend to remember the

important contributions of people fighting for justice in the workplace, may we as a

congregation gather to celebrate God’s presence and discern God’s will for our lives. May

Grace Good Shepherd continue to be a compassionate, inclusive church in a world that so

desperately needs to feel the love of Christ.

Fall discussions

In October, Lynn will be offering a discussion on Islam. We will watch some interesting videos as

we read together Reza Aslan’s new book: “Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth”

Professor Aslan is a Muslim and a very popular New Testament scholar.

In November, Lynn will led a discussion on “Zen and Christianity: Practicing across Traditions.”

We will be visiting a Zendo, hearing from teachers and practitioners of Zen, and learning the

practice of Zazen (seated meditation). We will also be reading selections from the Zen teacher,

poet and peace activist, Thich Nhat Hahn. Be looking for more information during September.

In the next month, Lynn will be beginning filming for a documentary on racism. Anyone willing

to share their personal stories, please contact him at 928.209.0708. Let us be the change we

would like to see in the world! Also anyone who would like to be in a promotional video for our

church, please let Lynn know. Don’t be shy!!!

Exploring the New Testament

New Testament 101

Whether people consider it a book of faith or a cultural artifact, the New Testament is among the most significant writings that the world has ever known. Yet the New Testament is also among the most widely disputed and least understood books in history. This seminar will be a challenging and fascinating reflection on the world of the early Judaism and the emerging Christian community. Each of the Gospels will be explored along with the writings of Paul. The course will end with an exploration of the book of Revelations. It will require watching two 30 minute videos each week in preparation for the sessions. The sessions will last approximately one hour and the cost for the materials will be $50.00, including 24 videos and a guide book for discussion. This will open to the community and will require at least ten participants. So, encourage your friends to join us. We will begin our study in Epiphany and conclude by Holy Week. Please speak to Lynn of your interest, ASAP.

We hope that you and your children will consider participating in the GGS Kids' Bell Choir this year. Wishing you and your families a lovely fall season at school, at church, and in the community! Sally

Beginning Saturday, September 12th

GGS Kids’ Bell Choir is starting again! Kathy Schmidt, a longtime member of Grace Good Shepherd Church, will be getting started with the GGS Kids' Bell Choir for children who are 3-12 years old. The Kids’ Bell Choir will participate in worship services on the first Sundays of the month, beginning Sunday, November 1, 2015. Kathy will be conducting an orientation workshop for all children interested in participating in the GGS Kids’ Bell Choir on Saturday, September 12, at 10-10:45 a.m. at the church. We invite and encourage all interested children to attend this workshop. Refreshments will be served following the workshop, and there is no cost for participation. A parent or guardian will need to be present during the workshop as well as at the worship services on the first Sundays of each month. Please RSVP to Sally Botzler at 839-3189 or [email protected] so that an adequate supply of materials can be prepared for the workshop.

This is a message from our Hunger Action Enabler in preparation for the Pedal 4 Protein riders on the 20th of September. Chris Callahan is coordinating this for our church. If you can help out with salads or desserts for the Sunday "fish fry" dinner and/or continental breakfast on the morning of the 21st, please call Chris at 599-6563. -Pastor Deborah Dear Overnight Congregations, Wow, just a few more weeks and Pedal for Protein riders will be pedaling to your church. As you know, this year our goal is to raise $30,000 for grass root food pantries. You can help us by supporting our riders who are cycling from Crescent City to Tiburon, and will need some healthy snacks, fruit and beverages such as juice, non-dairy milk, etc. We are asking that congregations supply us with a continental breakfast to help us on our way. We will plan on arriving from 2:30pm to 4:30pm each day. Our long days riding are to McKinleyville and Fort Bragg, so plan on riders not before 3:00pm those 2 days. A few light snacks fruit, cookies and water when we arrive would be appreciated, while the riders relax and go for showers at local members’ homes. We will have approximately 12 riders needing showers. We appreciate that someone will do wash and dry our jerseys, etc at each overnight stop. Our total group will be 18-20 riders. A few more riders will join us in Tomales for the final day of the ride. So far we have raised about $10,000 towards our goal of $30,000. If you wish to help our fundraising see link below or checks sent to the Presbytery office. Also if you would like, I will bring our Pedal for Protein t-shirts, Global Craft jewelry and Equal Exchange items we sell as a fund raiser for the Pedal for Protein, just let me know. We will have special pricing for our host churches and members. http://www.imathlete.com/donate/PedalforProtein2
