Easter at the Pool
A lile bit of rain and a temperature that did

this year but was sll a fun and extremely
well run event thanks to the great pool sta.
The Shire gave free entry, egg painng, and
a BBQ, along with an Easter egg hunt which
cleverly used tokens rather than the eggs
themselves for hunng. Great for avoiding
melted unfound eggs in days to come!

Ranger Work Enabled
Move Back to
CommunityMy name is Alysha Taylor. I am 20 years old
and this is my story.
In my early years of growing up in
Parnngurr, I formed a close connecon
with my grandparents, Waka and KarnuTaylor. My parents and family moved to
Port Headland and Bidyadanga. Eventually,
we moved to Perth.
While living in Perth, I completed Year
12 then completed further study in
engineering and aviaon. I was at the stage
in life where I was applying for jobs and
aending interviews. I even applied to get
my own home. Even though things were
going ok I felt something was missing. My
spirit was not happy.
Then I heard that my grandparents were
geng old and not in the best of health.
I just knew I needed to go home, to my
place of growing, where I belong. My
grandparents lived alone but now they
have me; someone to care for them, cook,
clean and help around the house. This
makes them feel happy and pleased their
granddaughter has come home.
My grandmother Karnu told me about the
women’s ranger programme with KJ. Beingable to get a job helped me to make the
decision to come back to the community.
There are not many opportunies for
young Aboriginal girls to get jobs out in
their country, in remote communies.
Unfortunately, lots of young girls these
days are not doing much and are not
learning about their country.
I love everything about my grandparents.
Coming home means they can now pass on
all their stories and knowledge about theircountry to me. Being a women ranger at
Parnngurr makes Waka and Karnu happy.
When we are on country, they tell me about
the other ranger stories and we talk about
places they have been, how they lived and
what we need to do to look aer county.
I feel privileged to have a job as a ranger.
I would like to encourage other young
girls to get involved and learn about their
county too. It is important to make your
spirit feel at peace.

recognion of his service. Chrisne, with
her exceponal service to Newman’s
St. John Ambulance since 2004, was
recognised by admission as a member to
the Order of St John; an honour not given
lightly.
Conducted by the Dame Commander,
the Excellency the Hon. Kerry Sanderson,Governor of WA, the investure was
an opportunity to recognise and thank
members of St. John at all levels. The
modern Order of St John is an Order
of Chivalry under the Crown and exists
alongside the Priory in Australia. WA is
the only state or territory with a Dame or
Knight Commander, and only WA and the
Australian Priory have the right to bear
the Order Sword, Commandery and Order
banners on ceremonial occasions.
The Ceremonial aspect of the Investure
added dignity and a memorable sense of
occasion to the process of saying ‘Thank
you’.
Newman St Johns is currently recruing
new volunteers. Visit the sub centre and
meet the crew, every Wednesday between
7 pm and 9 pm.
SAFE Travels
Western Australia’s largest foster care
based animal rescue organisaon, held its
inaugural Roundtable Conference in Perth
recently.
SAFE (Saving Animals From Euthanasia) has
branches operang across the state, from
Kununurra in the north to Esperance in the
south. In addion, branches in Broome,
Hedland, Karratha, Newman, Carnarvon,
Kalgoorlie, Bunbury and Busselton came
together for the event.
SAFE’s Founder, Sue Hedley said, “SAFE
began in 2003 to address the lack of animal
rescue services in WA’s north-west. I truly
could not have imagined that 13 years later
we would have 10 branches across the
state saving thousands of lives each year.”
Funded by Loerywest, the weekendconference brought the SAFE team
together to nalise an operaons manual
for new branches.
Ms Hedley says, “Having a manual to guide
new branches will grow the foster care
model of animal care and adopon. We will
be able to reach so many more animals in
need of rehoming”.
SAFE branches are established wherever
members of the community are ready to
help companion animals whose lives are
otherwise at risk. [email protected]
