SUMMER 2013

A MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR It’s “GO” Time.It is Summer and time to get “GO-

ING”. No more excuses, it’s time to put your plans and dreams into ACTION.

When I say “travel” you might think of a few places you will be going or want to visit. It may bring to mind a trip to see family or simply heading over the mountain to get off the coast for a little while. When I say “travel” to Liam our sports guy he immediately thinks about basketball and when Judy our Recreation Superintendent hears “travel” she thinks

about all the visitors from out of town that come to Newport and the Recreation Center. I talked with Peggy at the 60 Plus Center (Senior Center) about “travel” she thinks of adventure and freedom, why freedom I ask? She says that when she takes off with a loaded van full of seniors they go and explore new places they are going where no one would likely be able to visit on their own. Kathy at the pool says she immediately thinks of fun when I asked her about “travel”. So, if this has you thinking about “travel” then it’s GO time. Please be careful and watch out for bikes and kids.

We have abundant options for the kids this summer and kids of all ages should think about going on a hike. With miles and miles of beaches, trails and boardwalks in our area, there are many options from which to choose. The morning usually has the least amount of wind but when the sun drops into the ocean the views are often breath taking. There is no place like the Oregon Coast with its rug-ged beauty and Panoramic views.

Here is your summer challenge: GO get moving and participate. Check out a ball game at the park and pickleball at the Rec Center. Join a race/walk. Throw in a beach bon fire and before you can say “Buccaneer Rampage” it will be Labor Day. The time to “GO” is right now.

Bon voyage,

Jim ProtivaParks and Recreation [email protected]

If so, A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falls can help you get back to the people and pastimes you care about. It only makes sense to be concerned about falling, but letting the fear of falling hold you back from active living is even more dangerous. Limiting your activities leads to increased physical weakness, making the risk of falling even greater, and increased isolation and depression can result from limiting interactions with your family and friends. The strategies taught in A Matter of Balance will improve your quality of life and help you stay independent! If you are an adult who is worried about the risk of falling, A Matter of Balance will help you reduce your fear and increase your activity levels. INSTRUCTOR LED PROGRAMS:Aqua Zumba Monday 8-9am Water Exercise Tuesday through Friday 8-9amWater Boot Camp Tuesday & Thursday 5:30 – 6:30pm, Saturday 8:30-9:30am AQUA ZUMBAShannon Rackowski brings Zumba to the water. In the water Zumba takes on a whole new environment: tempo, range of motion, center of gravity, body weight (10%), and of course the water’s protective quality with less impact to joints or injuries of an individual.WATER EXERCISELed by Cathy Peltier, this class delivers low impact exercise and stretching to people at their own level.

WATER BOOT CAMPInstructor Rebecka Lakeman leads participants through a higher intensity workout of sports drills, circuits, and interval training. WATER WALKINGPool configuration is wide open with no lane lines providing ample space for patrons to walk the width of the pool in the shallow water, and perform water jogging in the deep water. This is a great transitional program for patrons who have been away from the water, are new to the water, are recovering from a surgery, or require physical therapy. INDEPENDENT EXERCISEIndependent exercise uses two lanes of the pool providing a space for patrons to exercise independently without having to lap swim.

THE NEWPORT POOL OFFERS MORE THAN JUST LAP SWIMMING!

Page 15: Newport Activity Guide

POOLSCHEDULE

INDEPENDENT EXERCISE:Independent exercise uses two lanes of the pool providing a space for patrons to exercise independently without having

to lap swim.

SOME HEALTH BENEFITS OF SWIMMING1: Do more with less ~ Swimming offers the ability to work your body without harsh impact to your skeletal system. When the human body is submerged in water, it automatically becomes lighter. When immersed to the waist, your body bears just 50 percent of its weight.

2: Increased Muscle Tone and Strength ~ Water is a substance about twelve times as dense as air. That means that every kick and every arm stroke becomes a resistance exercise -- and it’s well known that resistance exercises are the best way to build muscle tone and strength.

3: Improved Flexibility ~ Swimming puts the body through a broad range of motion that helps joints and ligaments stay loose and flexible. With every stroke, as you reach forward, you’re lengthening the body, which not only makes it more efficient in the water; it also helps give you a good stretch from head to toe.

4: A Healthier Heart ~ In addition to toning visible muscles like pectorals, triceps and quads, swimming also helps improve the most important muscle in our bodies: the heart.Because swimming is an aerobic exercise, it serves to strengthen the heart, not only helping it to become larger, but making it more efficient in pumping -- which leads to better blood flow throughout your body.
