Shani is a wonderful advocate for Newport school and always has the best interests of our students at the heart of all she does. Kerri Paul will also continue in the role as Treasurer. Nothing is ever too much trouble for Kerri and her efficiency and flexibility is much appreciated. Currently the position of Secretary remains vacant. The role of secretary includes preparing the meeting agenda, taking the minutes (these are distributed by the school) and receiving and dispatching correspondence. It would be wonderful to have a secretary for 2018 so if you are interested in this, please contact: [email protected]. The group experienced a fantastic summer morning and developed their communication and team work skills as they paddled in groups of two and three to Currawong. When there, they had the opportunity to discuss the characteristics of good leaders and in larger groups, put some of these ideas into action as they worked together to solve problems, find information and even create music. The morning has built on the skills and knowledge that the children learnt last year during the Year 5 Leadership program and given them a focus as the leadership for the school. I would like to thank Mr Moran for providing this great session. 1

Snowsports

With all the action taking place at the Winter Olympics in SouthKorea, it's difficult not to get excited about our own up andcoming Interschools Snow Sports races being held in July. TheInterschools is seen as a springboard for the Winter Olympicswith many of our Australian representatives being formerInterschools stars, Nate Johnson of Mona Vale among them.

Interschools - The Interschools is an organisation runningschool based snow races for students in Kindergarten to Year12. Public and Independent schools compete together withintheir regions. There are three regions within our state ( Northern,Southern and Sydney ). Newport competes in the NorthernRegion and will contest its Regional Titles during the first weekof the July school holidays at Thredbo. Students qualifyingthrough their Region can expect to then compete at Stateand maybe even National level. The Interschools offers thedisciplines of Alpine Ski, Skier Cross, Mogul Skiing,Cross-Country Skiing, Snowboard GS and Snowboard BoarderCross.

Newport's Program - Newport's Snow Sports Program is ateacher co-ordinated organisation with a parent committee. Allparents (and grandparents) are welcome to help. Along withsome great social occasions, our snow athletes participate indry land training at Newport PS every Tuesday afternoon duringterm 2 prior to the competition. Newport has been competingin the Interschools races every consecutive year since 2001.Children from Kindergarten to Year 6 are encouraged to have ago but are expected to be of level 3 or above in ability in eitherskiing or boarding (or they can do both), bearing in mind thatAlpine and Snowboard GS races will be held on Rossi RaceCourse at Thredbo.

An Information afternoon to inform interested families andanswer any questions will be held on Tuesday 20 March at 3:30pm in Mr Tickle's classroom.

Snow Sports is a wonderful winter opportunity for bothstudents and their families. We have so much fun along withrepresenting Newport PS 500 kilometres away from the shoresof Pittwater. If you would like to be part of our snow teamperhaps take a look at the Interschools website for a greatoverview of snow racing in NSW.
