Hello ‘Risers!

Can you believe this is our second issue now? Newrizons is growing more than ever, with all our clubs going on to do big things.

Our Math Club, for example, entered a national mathematics and science competition in late April. One of our students placed second at the sixth grade level and another placed in the top 500 at the third grade level. Our Dance Club, which we featured in the last issue, has performed for many event and festivals — they’re probably still dancing as you’re reading this now!

Plus, this time around, we’ve gotten more students contributing to this magazine. You can check out all the new faces to the right of this letter!

Over the next several months, you can expect our Chess Club to enter a tournament as well (which we will cover next time)! Our Art Club is also steadily moving towards submitting pieces to some art contests.

The Fundraising Club — our biggest club — has also been dedicated in raising money to support this magazine and also help raise money for charity. They have hosted several successful movie nights and sales. Together with the center, they have donated $500 to a learning center in Vietnam.

In this issue, we focused our stories on the accomplishments of the students and center. Thanks to everyone’s support, we have been able to achieve great heights.

Kids, keep rising up every day! Yours truly,

Anna N. Yang

CHAPTER 1The pain is Julia because she makes fun of

me. She makes fun of me because whenever

I didn’t do anything to her she just makes fun

of me because she thinks she is the “Great

One,” but she is the “Pain One.”

CHAPTER 2Whenever my cousin Sean talks to Julia, Sean

likes Julia more, so I never get to talk with

him. I’m jealous because I think Sean doesn’t

love me more than Julia. So Sean loves Julia

more than me. So I can tell Grandma that he

does not talk to me.

don’t. Because my cousin loves her.

My parents thinks that she is so smart that

they love her more than me.

Julia is a PAIN and the bossy sister.

CHAPTER 3 I know that she is smarter than me, and my

gets good grades it’s unfair that I don’t get

good grades at all!

CHAPTER 4I’m so irritated because why do my parents love

her more than me? I try my best so my parents

will love me, but it’s so unfair that they love her.

I think my parents want to kick me out instead

because she’s the best, smart, and better than

me. It’s also because she wants me to be smarter

than me so she is my worst, bossy, and meanful

sister. I think they love her more than me.

My older sister Julia is the great one because

she is the smart one in my family.

She is the great one because she thinks I am a

trouble one.

I always get in trouble and bad because she is

the smartest and I’m not.

My sister is the great one.

JULIA’S LETTER

DEAR ERIN,

You already know I am NOT “The Pain.” First of all, I have to

do everything for you, and you’re not even thankful. Second of

all, you pull my hair, bite me, kick me, and do all the mean things

I could think of when I don’t even do anything. Third of all, it is

very hard being the bigger sister. The bigger sister has to get

beat up because of nothing!! You get everything you want. You

get more good grades because I READ! When I ask you to read

with me, you would never read with me. To get good grades, the

FIRST thing you need to do is READ! That is why you don’t get

good grades. Another reason why I get good grades is because I

practice. Whenever I help you with homework, you always go and

do gymnastics. That is why I don’t let you do gymnastics during

Mondays and Thursdays! I also listen to mommy, daddy, Phuong,

Bac (Aunt) Luyen, and Bac (Uncle) Nho. Sometimes you ignore

their calls. I don’t get in trouble because I LISTEN!! I even take

care of you! I get your iPad for you, I even EAT YOUR DINNER

for you! I have to watch you. I WISH you could see that I’m NOT

“the Pain!” Your sister LOVES you! You hate your sister!

LOVE,JULIA

A-Z: HELLO KITTY’S OBITUARY

An astronaut named Hello Kitty was

famous.

But on Nov. 2, 2016, she died.

Comets killed her.

Danielle was Hello Kitty’s best best

friend.

Edgewater was where Hello Kitty lived.

France, Spain, the United Kingdom,

and also Poland had a meeting about

Hello Kitty because she was their

mascot.

Greenland was happy because they

were enemies.

Hello Kitty had a good life until Nov. 2,

2016.

Ice cream was her favorite food.

Just kidding, it was pad thai and

cookies.

Kites were her favorite toy to play with.

Lammy the Lamb was her pet that

died three years before.

March 26, 2013 was when Lammy the

Lamb died.

Nia was the comet that killed Hello

Kitty.

On that night, many people honored

her with flowers.

People on different planets offered

a golden flower because she was that

special.

Rainy days were signs that Hello Kitty

was sad because people were doing

bad things. Scientists found her bones

underground.

Tacos were her favorite food.

Umbrellas were always red to

remember her.

Very few of them were worried about

going to outer space.

Water was her favorite drink.

Xenon was a new planet that formed

after Hello Kitty died.

Yasmine was her godmother.

Zootopia was her favorite movie.

THE CRAZY PARTYWRITTEN BY BECKHAM LUONG (MIDDLE SCHOOL)

There was once a store

named Everything. You

could find anything there.

Its name really lived up to its

reputation. Not only could

you find everything there, but

it was also well-organized. For

example, aisle A had apples

and aisle B had bats.

Tom had a task of bringing

supplies for a party. He

quickly remembered that the

Everything store was nearby.

When he went in, he had to

decide on a letter so he chose

“T.” (It was also the first letter

of his first name.)

In aisle T he found:

tomatoes, tables, tacos,

trash bags, tea, tin foil,

tablecloths, toys, T.V.s, tape,

tangerines, teaspoons,

trampoline, towels, tofu,

Twinkies, Twister (the game),

turnips, toasters, and

tamales. He bought it all and

still had well over a million

dollars in his bank account.

Everything he chose were

great items for the party. He

took the tomatoes, tacos,

tea, turkey, tangerines, tofu,

Twinkies, turnips, and tamales

and made them into a huge

cake. It nearly sent a person

to the hospital, but everything

turned out OK. Everyone

seemed to have fun with

Twister and the kids enjoyed

the toys. A kid threw a Twinkie

at the T.V .and the trampoline

was filled with trash bags.

Someone even took the

piece of cake and put it in

the toaster, which made

it really good. Sadly, the

toaster malfunctioned. The

table broke in half because

of the huge cake Tom put on

it. So, everyone taped the

table back together.

Then the tablecloth

went missing so Tom went

out to find it. Somebody

accidentally put water in

the cake with the teaspoons

so it exploded everywhere.

Luckily for Tom, his mom was

sleeping upstairs so he didn’t

get in trouble. As everyone

left the party, Tom was forced

to use the tissues and towels

to clean the mess himself.

The next day Tom

wanted to host another

party, so once again, he

went to the Everything store

to do it all again.

PERSONAL EXPERIENCES

WRITTEN BY VIVIAN VO (MIDDLE SCHOOL)

Eleanor Roosevelt once

said, “You must do the thing

you think you cannot do.”

When I heard this saying,

I thought about the time

I chose my instrument for

band and orchestra in 4th

grade. What inspired me

to use the cello is Yo-Yo Ma

when I heard him play Swan

and Attaboy in the album

“Goat Rodeo.”

When I went to the store

to rent my cello, I was so

excited. It took me an hour to

get my instrument, but it was

worth it. The week after that,

I started orchestra class. The

first thing I did when I came

to class was jump around. I

thought that playing the cello

was going to be easy, but I

was surprised.

Our first lesson was

learning the A, D, G, and C

string. It was easy for me to

do everything at first, but

when we started reading

music, I had a hard time

reading the music sheet. I

knew how to read notes, but

I wasn’t a fast reader. When

our teacher announced that

we would have a test on the

song that we were reading, I

panicked.

When I got home, I would

practice reading notes until

I knew them really well. I

practiced and practiced

until I got it right. The next

day when I took my test, I

thought I would do bad. At

the end of class my teacher

told us our grade. I was

surprised with a 95 percent

on my test. From that day

on, I got better at reading

because I practiced.

In the summer, my mom

lets me have private lessons.

I was very happy. My teacher

let me play The Swan. I was

happy because that was

the song I knew I wanted

to play from the start. This

is my story on the time I

did something I thought I

couldn’t do, and I succeeded.

For summer break, I would like to go to

a water park to play with my mom and my

friend. I wish I could be there forever. I could

go to a roller coaster that will be very scary. I

would go to a nice breakfast and a nice beach

a very nice dinner too. I will live in a hotel with

a swimming pool. In the room there could

be like a bed and a T.V. I hope to be in there

forever. I hope there is a park too.

Where would you like to go on break?

When it’s summer break I will go on a

vacation. I will go to Jamaica with my niece

and my family. We will eat a healthy breakfast

every morning. Also we’ll eat lunch at noon

every day, and we’ll have dinner at fancy

restaurants with my family and my niece. We

will have three meals every day. We will go to

the beach every day because we have a pool

in the neighborhood, so we can go there any

time. So my mom and dad and I like to swim in

the beach water. Sometimes I play in the sand.

My parents always order beer every time we

go to the beach too.

If I could give advice to

anyone, I would give advice

to one of my closest friends.

There are several things she

needs help with. However,

what she needs help with the

most is learning to say, “No.”

She could end up hurting

many people if she doesn’t.

Kelly is a person who

doesn’t want to hurt people. If

someone were to ask her for

something, she would always

say, “Yes.” She ends up giving

all her stuff away (like pencils,

candy, gum, etc.). Kelly is

someone who would never

reject someone if they ask

her out. She will never refuse

someone when they ask for

help, which is sometimes

good but could also lead her

down a bad road.

I would tell Kelly that

isn’t good to not want to

hurt people. However, she

shouldn’t have to suffer

because of her want to not

hurt others. Kelly doesn’t want

to give things away, but she

does. I would tell her that

sometimes it’s necessary to

just say, “No.” Just because

she doesn’t want to hurt

other, it doesn’t mean she

should hurt herself to make

others happy. Plus, this makes

it easier for people to take

advantage of her, and that’s

something that shouldn’t

happen.

Sometimes you should

just say no. Don’t let yourself

suffer when trying to make

others happy. Be able to

tell the difference between

being nice and being taken

advantage of. That’s the

advice I would give Kelly. I

hope she will consider my

advice.

Communication is one amazing aspect of

the modern cellular phone. Instead of walking

over to a friend to tell them something,

you could just call your friend. Cellular

communication has also saved many lives.

If there were an emergency, a person could

simply call 911 from any location and there

would be people coming to help that person.

Another way to communicate using the

cell phone is to send a message. Messages

are more convenient and easier than calling

someone. For example, if you don’t have

service but you have internet, you could just

text instead. Communication is probably the

most important use of a cellular phone.

In conclusion, cellular phones have a huge

positive impact on the world. Phones provide

communication entertainment. For example,

video game apps have provided people

with a lot of entertainment. Phones have

also provided people with communication

which has saved many lives. I predict in the

near future that phones will serve much more

greater uses.

592653589793238462643383

have to do with math, and we

use math every day without

even noticing it!

Students of the math club

learn new lessons and review

simple problems to benefit

from problem-solving skills.

As a result, students tend

to perform more effectively

on quizzes and tests. By

mastering all mathematical

techniques, anyone dedicated

enough will be able to pass

virtually any math exam.

Dr. Ryan Le and Mr. Eric

Lam lead the Math Club. They

teach a variety of subjects

such as basic math, algebra,

trigonometry and calculus.

Club members learn many

formulas and techniques to

use across all math subjects

and homework problems.

Students in the math club

work on scenarios that make

them think outside the box.

If students stumble upon

any roadblocks, tutor Eric

Lam and Director Dr. Ryan

Le guide the members in the

right direction by thoroughly

explaining the problem and

putting the questions in more

basic terms.

Not only will students

likely be able to pass math

exams with flying colors,

but they may also begin

understanding how to build

technology and things in

three-dimension. Learning

more about math now will

help students get into a good

college, leading to a better

job later on in life. This club

is just one way for students

to start their journey to the

future.

Pizza is a delicious food that is both crunchy and savory.

In Japanese, they call the flavor of pizza “umami,” which means “strong meaty taste” in English! Pizza is so good, people eat it not just for lunch and dinner but breakfast as well!

Pizza was first made in the 10th century and it has been changing over time until now. It originated in Italy. Pizza is mainly made from tomato sauce on a flat

piece of bread with cheese on the top.

Pizza can come in a variety of extra toppings for more flavor. Some consider the best toppings for pizza to be pepperoni, cheese, chicken, mushrooms, sausage, bacon and pineapples.

We asked several people about their favorite pizza topping. Most people loved pepperoni, a classic, the most. (See pie chart above.)

Sometimes people eat pizza with garlic dressing, ranch dressing, soda and more.

In the United States, pizza can be ordered as fast food. Some mainstream restaurant chains that offer delivery are Pizza Hut, Little Caesars, Papa John’s and Dominos. Pizza is also ordered as a treat for

guests or kids. You can also order it when you don’t feel like cooking!

Other restaurants that offer more “gourmet” pizza, or upper scale pizza, include California Pizza Kitchen, Mellow Mushroom and Big Pie in the Sky Pizzeria. They make several specialty pizzas with all sorts of toppings. At

California Pizza Kitchen, for example, they make “Thai Chicken” pizzas, which uses grilled chicken breast with peanut sauce; later added are crisp bean sprouts, julienned carrots and slivered scallions.

If you want to learn about more ways to create your own specialty pizza, continue reading on!

CENTER SPOTLIGHT

This year (2016) Newrizons Education Center

donated $500 to a learning center in the countryside of Saigon. Since the students are financially unfortunate, they cannot afford to go to school. They go to the center to

learn for free instead. However, the head

teacher (the principal) is also very poor. In order for him to continue the learning center, he had to sell the land he inherited from his mother to get money. He also has a small restaurant that sells vegan food. He

uses money from it to feed his family and help the school. The head teacher also feeds his students for free when they don’t have enough money for food.

Newrizons had their representative in Vietnam give 130 presents to the 130 students. The gifts included

notebooks, pencil cases, pens, and pencils. They also donated 30 kg of rice for the center to help feed the students. Along with the $500, Newrizons also donated 2.5 million VND to the center so the head teacher could buy furniture for the center to use.

When the representative came to give the gifts to the students, they saw the center. It was a small room with many classes. The center uses screen dividers to separate each classroom. Several volunteers come to help teach the students.

Newrizons also gave the

students a treat. Since they are less fortunate, candy is a luxury to the students. After handing out gifts, the kids sang songs, played games and gave a “Thank You” speech to Newrizons Academy.

‘My Dance Club Experience’

TINA!

The Dance Club consists of seven members: Vivian,

Dalla, Lammy, Christina, Melissa, Jennifer and me, Tina. In the beginning of forming the dance club, we had to recruit members. We originally had seven girls and one boy, although some members left.

OurfirstdancewasfortheFall Festival. We all met up on Saturday school to practice one more time before leaving for the festival.

For this particular

performance we wore button up vests with long thin pants and danced with Vietnamese hats as our prop. Once we were done changing at the festival, we went out backstage. As we saw more and more people come to see us perform, our hearts raced.

One by one, all the groups at the festival performed. Thenfinallyitwasourturn, and we walked swiftly one by one up the stairs.

BOOM! The music was so loud it shocked us! We

adjusted though, and the dance was a success.

Our second dance took place on Feb. 14. Our song was called “Con Buom.” We danced with colorful dresses and bright pink fans. (See photos for reference.) We had our hair in a bun for the dance. This was also a successful performance.

At the end of the dance, we all gathered together for the last time to pack up. Overall, Dance Club has been a fun experience.

I am small as an ant

and big as a whale, I

can soar through the

air like a bird with a tail. I can

be seen by day and not by

night, I can be seen with a big

flash of light. I follow whoever

controls me by the sun, but I

fade away when dark fell like

a ton. What am I?

A farmer has a dog,

a sack of grain and

a live chicken, all of

which he must take across a

river. The boat will only carry

him and one of the things at

a time or it will sink. Without

the farmer, the dog would kill

the chicken, and the chicken

would eat the grain. How

does he get all three across

safely to continue his journey?

RIDDLES & BRAIN TEASERS

Try to identify the

COLOR of the

words (not the word

it reads!) out loud without

making a single mistake:

Did you know? This psychological brain tickler is called the “Stroop effect” in which your brain will most likely recognize the meaning of the word before the color itself.

Answer: He takes the chicken and comes back; then he takes the grain and comes back with the chicken; then he takes the dog and comes back; then he takes the chicken.

Which one is the

bigger shape?

Answer: This is a trick question! The lower figure appears larger, however, both figures are identical. This figure is called Jastrow’s Illusion.

2A basket contains 5

apples. Do you know

how to divide them

among 5 kids so that each

one has an apple and one

apple stays in the basket?

Answer: 4 kids get an apple (one apple for each one of them) and the fifth kid gets an apple with the basket still containing the apple.
