Dear Friends,
As you know, winter came to us very early this
year. On November 12th we received seven inches of
snow, bitter cold, and our first school closure snow day!
Despite the chill and challenges, our ever-faithful tutors arrived to
teach our committed learners, and our spirits were lifted. That is
what we are all about - giving and receiving the gift of literacy
which changes lives.
Especially during this season of giving we celebrate the
generosity of more than 80 tutors who support and encourage their
leaners each week - in their jobs, at their children’s schools, during
neighborhood meetings - giving them the skills to communicate
and literally helping them find their voice.
In the past two months we have welcomed 14 new learners and
matched them with tutors who could meet their scheduling needs. We
still have learners on the waiting list and new ones registering each
week. We need more tutors and urge you to consider becoming one
and/or invite someone you know to do so.
We are delighted to welcome Linda Meade, our new computer
coordinator, who is really not new since she joined our staff in July.
Linda brings a wealth of skills and has been expanding use of technol-
ogy with our learners and tutors. We are happy to have her with us.
Thank you, one and all, for your generous monetary gifts, for
sharing your time and talents, and your in-kind support. We are
blessed, and in turn, we bless you. Merry Christmas and a peace filled
new year.
Sister Carleen

We welcome Linda Meade, our new Computer Coordinator
Linda joined our ARLC staff in July, follow-ing the retirement of Brenda Sparkman. A graduate of Northern Kentucky University, Linda moved to Michigan to join a newspaper software company as a part of the Installation and Training team. Traveling around the US, before 9/11, was enjoyable and
meeting people from all around the country was invaluable. When traveling became more complicated she joined the technical support team and was able to be in the office more, helping customers with technical issues via the phone. At ARLC, we are encouraging our learners and tutors to utilize the computer lab and the Smart Board. This is a secondary piece to the one-on-one time they spend together each week and is used to supplement the learning pro-cess. The computer lab has many software packages including Rosetta Stone that they work on together to practice vocabulary and pronuncia-tions. Using the headsets with micro-phones, they can speak and the soft-ware does a good job of recognizing the learners’ words, although there have been a few complaints that it doesn’t always recognize words if the accent is a bit heavy. This valuable tool is available for our learners by the generous donations of our bene-factors and the various grants awarded to the ARLC.
The Smart Board usage has in-creased more than 60 hrs. so far this year. It offers reading, comprehension and games based on Laubach Way to Reading text books. When attending a thirty minute Smart Board session, learners use the book number and lesson number they are on to log into the system. The games have been set up to use the vocabulary from their lesson in fun and creative ways. Standing at the board and using their hands to manipulate the game uses their minds in a multisensory manner which is helpful in the learning process. Not to men-tion it’s a lot of fun!

My Happiest Vacation by SG I was very, very, very, very happy in the summer to vacation in Mexi-co. I joined my family in their house. Because in Mexico the life is more re-laxed. The food is very good. My kids are very happy in Mexico playing all
day outside. They enjoyed the warm weather. We enjoyed the delicious ice cream every day at the ice cream shop. They played on bicycles and with little puppies. Now they want to go to Mexico again. They only used their tablets and televi-sion a little. We missed their dad at home in Adrian, but we were very happy on vacation. My husband came to get us in Guanajuato, Mexico, and we flew back home to Michigan. The children went back to school the next week. We and my parents miss each other very much.
Something That I Always Wanted by NM
Something that I always wanted was a pool table. The reason why I want it is be-cause I see people playing pool all the time. It looks like they enjoy playing the game. I still remember my first time playing a game. My friends taught me how to play. I made a couple of mistakes when we played the first game. After I kept on practicing I learned how to play and now I enjoy playing. In the future I want to own a house and buy a pool table so I can enjoy playing anytime when I have a chance to play!
The Beach by JS
In the city where I live there is a very beautiful beach. I go in the summer when the sun is very hot. I load a towel, cold drinks and a bathing suit in my van. I like to walk to the seashore and feel the sand on my feet and the cold water of the waves. I stop in the shade of a palm tree. I rent an umbrella and put my things under.

My Story by MP My mother and father were born in Mexico, in Juanajuato. They had ten children, five girls, five boys, all born in Mexico. They all moved to the U.S. My oldest sister passed away ten years ago. She did not stay here but moved to Mexico. My other siblings live in different States; California, Wyoming, Texas, Michigan. My sib-lings are all working, married and have families. I love my family. I see my sister who lives in Wyoming, once a year and my brothers and sisters every week, except my brother in California. My mother is alive but my father passed away when I was five years old.
Role of a Grandmother by IP
From my grandma I learned to be a hard worker. I also learned to be a good person. I also learned to be responsible. I would like my grandchildren to make good choices. Also be respectful to others. Finally, I would like them to study hard so they can be successful.
Learner assignment: write short paragraphs using the questions below. By MR Q: What do you like to do for amusement? A: I like to do many things for amusement and with other people. I like to go to the movies with my friends and family. [Also,] I like to go to the park. I do not enjoy going to the ball games at all. [For] me is not amusing. Q: What kind of work do you like the most? A: Right now I work in the health care field, and this is the kind of work I really enjoy. I like to take care of people, and there is a lot of training needed for my job, like meds, CPR and First Aid. I got the training from my nursing school.

Want to learn a new language?

FREE I recently began trying to learn Spanish in hopes of being more welcoming to our Spanish speakers
attending our Beginning English Conversation Class. Many of them speak very little English and I would like
to be able to speak a few phrases to help them find their way around.
One of our learners recommended that I try Duolingo. It is a free website that offers many different
languages, not just Spanish. It was a bit tough at first but I found it very interesting and am learning more
quickly than with the previous website that I was using. If you want to try your hand at another language,
check out the website at duolingo.com. Once you set up your account and choose your language the software
walks you thru the steps. I find it very user friendly and encouraging.
The Adrian District Library also has access to Mango, another website that teaches various languages,
so if you have a library card, you can try that website for free. I had used it first and was enjoying it but Duo-
lingo seems to be a better choice for me. For help with Mango, please contact the library for help accessing
the website.
