From Dina Soriano, Counselor From the candy to the costumes, Halloween is a fun-filled time for kids and parents alike. But it can pose dangers to young revelers. To help make this year's festivity a trick-free treat, follow these simple safety tips: Trouble-Free Trick-or-Treating
Accompany young children (under age 12). Make sure they know how to call 911 in case they get lost. Check to make sure they know their home phone number.
For older kids who are trick-or-treating on their own, find out the route they'll be taking and when they'll be coming home. Also be sure that they:
carry a cell phone, if possible go in a group and stay together only go to houses with porch lights on and walk on
sidewalks on lit streets (never walk through alleys or across lawns)
walk from house to house (never run) and always walk facing traffic when walking on roads
stay away from candles and other flames know to never go into strangers' homes or cars cross the street at crosswalks and never assume that
vehicles will stop Give kids flashlights with new batteries. Kids may also enjoy wearing
glow sticks as bracelets or necklaces. Limit trick-or-treating to your neighborhood and the homes of people
you and your children know. When your kids get home, check all treats to make sure they're sealed.
Throw out candy with torn packages or holes in the packages, spoiled items, and any homemade treats that haven't been made by someone you know.
Don't allow young children to have hard candy or gum that could cause choking.
Make sure trick-or-treaters will be safe when visiting your home, too. Remove anything that could cause kids to trip or fall on your walkway or lawn. Make sure the lights are on outside your house and light the walkway to your door, if possible. Keep family pets away from trick-or-treaters, even if they seem harmless to you.
Thank You! As a student here at Trillium Creek Primary School, I want to thank all the parents and our PTA for the kid projects you have done this year for us. First, I want to thank you for taking your time to stand by our forest path and mark the Forest Flyer cards for each lap we run. As a ‘Frequent Flyer’, I’m on my way to complete the Marathon by May! Also, thank you for hosting the costume swap at our school. Many of those costumes were seen at our fun Harvest Happening last Friday night! We also appreciate having the DJ and all the games at the fun Harvest Happening event. Another kid project that we are grateful for is the presentation of Art Literacy lessons. This past month you took the time and effort to bring the artwork of Gustav Klimt to us. We enjoy walking around and seeing our beautiful artwork on the walls. In addition to all of the above, computers purchased from last spring’s auction arrived! All students, grades kindergarten through fifth, now have access to computers, furthering our learning. Finally, last week two more basket-ball hoops were installed. We now have places for students to play on the structures, imagine in the forest, and play a variety of fun games like basketball, football, soccer, four square, tumbling, and tetherball.
Thank you again for all your hard work and all your volunteering to make Trillium Creek Primary a better place.
Sincerely, Mr. Garrett Jackson, Principal for a Day

Grow Our Garden of Giving! As you may have seen at the Harvest Happenings, we are starting a wonderful "Garden of Giving" campaign. For your donation, you would receive an engraved stone with an engraving of your choice, such as your family's name or your children's names. This stone will be installed out in the garden for you to visit and shows your support for this wonderful program.
What is the Garden of Giving? We are fortunate that we have three learning gardens for students to integrate their learning of reading, writing, mathematics, and science through observations and investigations in a place based educational approach. Currently, the main learning garden in the front of the school is cared for by our kindergarten, first and second graders. We also have two rooftop gardens, one planted with native plants seen on the Oregon Trail and the other planted with kale. With care, our learning gardens give us gifts of flowers and vegeta‐bles. This fall we enjoyed the sunflowers displayed in our of‐fice and students had the opportunity to taste tomato soup and green beans made from the vegetables grown in our learning gardens. Kale smoothies are next!
What is needed to continue growing the experiences around our learning gardens? We have identified items and activities that would support the goals of our learning gardens and our focus on sustainability. These include funds for:
A Vitamix to Prepare Food for Tasting Composting Pick‐up Charges Plants and Seedlings New Soil and Upkeep for the Garden Beds Tools as Needed Irrigation System for One of the Rooftop Gardens and, A Greenhouse and other items as we grow our garden...
How can I contribute to the garden of Giving? This fall, we are offering the opportunity to purchase a stone that will be engraved with your family or child's name and then placed in our Garden of Giving. If you are interested in seeing a sample of one of the stones from Stone Creations Northwest, stop by the school office. The stones vary by size and cost. If you are interested in ordering a stone, fill out the attached order form and return it to the school office with your check by Monday, December 15, 2014. Make checks payable to Trillium Creek Primary School Garden of Giving. Missoula Children's Theatre Missoula Children's Theatre (MCT) presents "Hansel and Gretel". Día de los Muertos, Day of the Dead Each culture has special celebrations. Part of our world language curriculum introduces important cultural events of Hispanic countries to all our children. We strive to link children and their families to diverse books, people, and cultures from around the world. The special celebration called Día de los Muertos will be recognized at Trillium Creek Primary School this October. The common goals of all teaching about special celebrations in other cultures are to:
Celebrate children and connect them to the world of learning through books, stories and libraries.
Nurture cognitive and literacy development in ways that honor and embrace a child’s home language and culture.
Introduce families to community resources that provide opportunities for learning through multiple literacies.
Recognize and respect culture, heritage and language as powerful tools for strengthening families and communities.
Read on for more information about Día de los Muertos From pre-Columbian times, Día de los Muertos, the Day of the Dead has been celebrated in Mexico, and other Latin countries. Today, it is traditionally celebrated on November 1st and 2nd. This is a very special ritual, since it is the day in which the families remember their departed relatives. Sometimes, when people of other cultures hear for the first time about the celebration of Día de los Muertos, they mistakenly think it is related to the US custom of Halloween or it must be scary or sad. Nothing is further from the truth. The customs have different origins and meanings. Día de los Muertos is a beautiful ritual in which Mexicans happily and lovingly remember their loved relatives who have passed away. It recognizes death as a natural part of the human experience, a continuum with birth, childhood, and growing up to become a contributing member of the community. This is much like when people go to a cemetery to leave some lovely flowers on a tomb or grave of a relative. The actual celebration of Día de los Muertos is filled with food, parties, and activities. During this celebration in Mexico, the streets near the cemeteries are filled with decorations of flowers, candy calaveras, skeletons and skulls, and parades. Mexicans begin to get ready for the holiday about a week before November 1st. Panaderías (bakeries) are filled with pan de muertos (bread of the dead),
and florists sell out of every kind of papel picado (flower), especially the cempasúchil (yellow marigold), the flower by which the Aztecs used to remember their dead by. Its color represents the tones of earth and is used to guide the souls to their homes and ofrendas (altars). Stores are filled with sugar Calaveras (skulls) of every size, and museums proudly display their exhibits of skeleton figurines dressed as mariachis or everyday workers, such as plumbers, taxi drivers, or doctors. Another traditional dish prepared for the celebration is the tasty Calabaza en Tacha (Sweet Pumpkin) a dessert prepared with pumpkin, cinnamon, and piloncillo (dark sugar) cones. The most familiar symbol of Día de los Muertos may be the calacas and calaveras (skeletons and skulls), which appear everywhere during the holiday: in candied sweets, as parade masks, as dolls. Calacas and calaveras are almost always portrayed as enjoying life, often in fancy clothes and enter-taining situations. Specifics of the celebration vary with region, but one of the most common customs is the making of elaborate altars to welcome departed spirits home. Vigils are held, and families often go to cemeteries to fix up the graves of their departed relatives. Festivities also frequently include traditional foods such as pan de muerto (bread of the dead), which can conceal a miniature skeleton. The celebration continues into the night when the dances begin. The dances are pertinent to the various regions. The Danza de los Viejitos, Dance of the Old Men, was in pre-Hispanic times the dance to honor the Sun. Another popular dance, Pescado Blanco, White Fish, expresses gratitude to the lake, since fishing is their most important economical activity. Día de los Muertos is a celebration! Because it is colorful and joyful, it is now celebrated by more and more people around the world.
