Why experience Monash?
In an age when so much information is available online, it can often seem more convenient to search for answers on a website than attend an on-campus event. However, universities continue to offer a wide range of events that are embraced by prospective students. Why should students consider making the effort to attend an on-campus event such as Open Day?
1. Events allow students to experience the culture of a university and campusThere are some things you just can’t get online, such as what a campus ‘feels’ like, or the particular ‘vibe’ of an institution. When prospective students come onto campus for an event, they can visualise themselves studying at the campus and ask questions such as: do I feel comfortable here? Will I fit in? Their answers can then help them decide whether a particular institution is for them.
2. Events can give an insight into what it’s like to study a particular disciplineMany events on offer to prospective students are discipline-specific, allowing them to gain a realistic idea of what it is actually like to study a particular course or in a certain field. These are invaluable opportunities as they can confirm or disprove whether a student’s concept of a course or career matches up with the reality of that course or career, allowing them to make more suitable choices.
3. Don’t just find what you’re looking for- discover what you didn’t even think ofWhilst students may be able to find answers to questions online, sometimes it can be difficult to know just what questions to ask. By attending an event, they are allowing the experts to guide them in making the best choice, as well as the opportunity to hear the questions and comments of other audience members.
This issue of the Update highlights a wide range of on-campus events for your students such as Year 10 and 11 Experience Days, Open Day and faculty offerings from Arts, Business, Engineering and Education.

Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences
Entry into the Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (Honours) The prerequisite requirements and study scores for the course are 35 for EAL or 30 for any other English, along with 30 in Chemistry.
The selection process consists of three components:
n Year 12 (or equivalent) results
n Domestic applicants: completion of the UMAT (Undergraduate Medical and Health Sciences Admission Test). The test is on 29 July. For further information, visit: umat.acer.edu.au
International applicants: completion of ISAT. For further information, visit: isat.acer.edu.au Note: International applicants who think that their residency status may change during the selection period should undertake both the ISAT and UMAT.
n Multiple Mini Interview (MMI).
All three components are weighted equally. Selection for interview (MMI) is based on a combination of an applicant’s UMAT and ATAR scores. Offer of interview is determined by the distribution of scores each year and therefore changes depending on each cohort.
Dean’s Rural List and Dean’s Indigenous List
Applicants who include MBBS in their preferences by close of the timely application period (30 September) will be contacted via email by Monash University in October with details about the selection process. At this time, applicants will also be invited to apply for the Dean’s Indigenous and Dean’s Rural Lists. Please encourage applicants to check their emails during this time as eligibility via these programs can improve an applicant’s chance of being invited to interview. Applicants should check their SPAM and TRASH folders during this time.

Science of more at Monash University
For the first time two of Victoria’s Group of Eight universities are accepting students into a Bachelor of Science at very similar clearly-in ATARs. This raises the question: How can we help our year 12 students make an informed decision about their future in science?
Comparing one degree to the next across different institutions can be challenging. From the outside, they can appear very similar, or perhaps even the same—but scratch the surface and distinct differences begin to emerge.
– Size isn’t everything, or is it? Each year Monash accepts around 1,000 students into science, less than half of other similarly-
sized institutions. Fewer students means more access to our science-exclusive support services including a careers advisor, industry placement program and revision classes. More importantly we offer double the lab hours as compared to other universities, meaning there are more opportunities to get hands-on.
Additionally, we offer genuine flexibility through our Bachelor of Science, putting our students in charge of how they structure their degree – all science, science plus electives outside of science – the choice is theirs.
– State-of the-art facilities If you haven’t been to the Clayton campus for a while, you may not realise the science precinct
has been transformed. We’ve invested millions in new facilities, teaching and learning spaces for our students. From our new state-of-the-art chemistry labs, to our science student only lounge and other informal in and outdoor study chill-out spaces -our spaces provide an excellent on campus experience.
– The many science-only opportunities At Monash our focus is on ensuring our students graduate career-ready. In addition to gaining a
solid education in science, our students are offered opportunities outside the classroom. They can get involved in leadership programs, ambassadorial programs, seek extra study support, pre-exam support, or even get involved in research at undergraduate level if they choose to.
– Appeal to the head and heart Most people study science because it something they love. The advantage of studying science
at Monash is the ability to combine it with another interest area, perhaps graduating with a double degree. We also recognise their passion by offering students who study more than one science subject through years 11 and 12 a VTAC subject bonus.
We will soon be launching a new science website. Check back in July: monash.edu/science

1. Specialisation in Primary and Secondary Health and Physical Education Students choosing this option will qualify as a generalist primary school teacher and a specialist health and physical education primary school teacher, as well as a secondary school teacher with health and physical education as their two specialist teaching areas.
2. Specialisation in Secondary Health and Physical Education Students choosing this option will qualify as a specialist secondary school teacher of both health (including human development) and physical education, and a third teaching area of their choice. Their third teaching area could be outdoor education and environmental studies, biology with a focus on exercise physiology, business, geography, mathematics or social education.
For further information about choices in Health and PE Education, please visit: monash.edu/education
