Cheverell

Church Services and meetings have been suspended during the current Conoravirus Crisis.

Bishop Nicholas has written to the Diocese in light of the latest guidance from the Archbishops that all public worship has been suspended.

“We are not stopping church, we are not closing anything, we ARE saying ‘church is changing’.” Bishop Nicholas said:

“The headline is that public worship will have to stop for the time being.”

Church is changing. “Our usual pattern of Sunday services and other midweek gatherings must be put on hold.

This is with immediate effect.

“Our churches will remain open for prayer.” Anyone who would like prayer for any reason or situation should call Rev Marion Harrison 01380 816963 or email [email protected].

The Bishop said: “Buildings can stay open. We are not stopping church, we are not closing anything, we ARE saying

‘church is changing’.

April ReflectionHow suddenly our world can change. Only weeks ago, the shops were full, everyone was at work and all the schools were open. And we shouldn’t forget, there was plenty of loo paper! For most of us, our individual worlds have become very insular. There is so much we don’t know and so many questions running through our minds. So how can I or the Church help. Two things come to mind; one is Cpl. Jones from Dad’s Army spinning round saying “Don’t panic. Don’t Panic. DON’T PANIC!” and the other, Jesus’ interpretation of the Law as Love the Lord your God and you neighbour as yourself. My emotions run from one of these to the other and then back again. I think if we can all keep a little calm in our lives and as much common sense as we can muster, we will come through this as a much more united community. While there are no services taking place in our churches, they are open every day for any of you that wish to come in for a few moments of peace and calm. Please remember to give anyone you may find already in church space. And finally, remember we the church community are praying for you, your families, your friends.May the Lord our God watch over us at this time of trial, may He protect us from harm, help us to help each other, strengthen our NHS and all healthcare workers and love us to the last. Amen.

Friday is the Rector's day off and from September she will be taking the last Thursday and Friday of the month as days off.The Benefice Office is open on Monday mornings and Thursday 9.00 am to 2 pm.

Village Care and Link - The Care Group

DRIVERS URGENTLY WANTEDFounded in 1982, The Care Group is a group of volunteer drivers who take people from the village(s)* to medical related appointments at hospitals etc. if they have no other means of travel.

It is with much regret that it is extremely unlikely that we will be able to take people wanting transport at present. The reason is that only 3 of our pool of 25 volunteer drivers is under 70 years old and are therefore particularly vulnerable to the virus.

If there are ANY under 70 year-olds out there who would be willing to supplement our now much reduced group of available drivers I would be extremely grateful. Please contact me on 818510 even if you have already volunteered to the Parish Council Initiative.(We are obliged to apply for DBS certificates for you and you would need to check that your car insurance policy is still ok but not let this stop you applying).

These are challenging times, especially for our clients who have no other way of getting to hospital appointments etc.

CORONAVIRUSAdditional Useful Information

Information and guidance is changing on a daily basis so it is important to pay attention to news outlets, government messages and healthcare updates. The following is a selection of useful sources of information.Useful websites:

• Stay at home advice at www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/self-isolation-advice

• Overview – what is it? www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19 • Number of COVID-19 cases in the UK, wiltshire.gov.uk/public-health-coronavirus • Common questions and answers www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/ • NHS 111 – information can be found at wiltshire.gov.uk/public-health-coronavirus • This sort of incident could cause undue pressure and anxiety. The NHS Every Mind

Matters website has some really simple useful tips and advice to support mental health www.nhs.uk/oneyou/everymindmatters

Useful telephone numbers: • NHS 111 – only call 111 if you cannot get help online • Education queries –phone the Department for Education on 0800 046 8687 • Wiltshire Council – 0300 456 0100 Social media Social media is a valuable tool at a time

like this but it can also contain misinformation and rumour. • The following Twitter (www.twitter.com) accounts will be regularly posting out the

latest factual advice and information related to the disease • Public Health England – @PHE_UK • Department of Health and Social Care – @

DHSCgovuk • Wiltshire Council – @WiltsCouncil • NHS England – @NHSEngland The NHS advises to only trust NHS organisations on

Twitter that are ‘blue-tick verified’ • Wiltshire Police – @wiltshirepolice • Dorset and Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service – @DWFireRescue • Local radio is also a good and timely source of information especially for those without

internet access.

Helping others: • Check on any vulnerable family, friends and neighbours; helping them with their

shopping and checking they have everything they need can make a huge difference • If you know someone who is self-isolating, contact them via phone, text, email or via

social media and check that they’re ok • Public Health England has advised people who are self-isolating to do what they can

to avoid visitors to their home and any deliveries of groceries, medications or other shopping should be left at the door.

WEST LAVINGTON VILLAGE HALLIn common with everyone else, The Village Hall has been affected by the spin off from coronavirus. Quite naturally, virtually every event and booking has been cancelled for the foreseeable future, and whilst this may be disappointing, just as we were planning a whole series of new events, safety first has to be the priority. We haven't specifically closed the building, indeed are taking the opportunity to deep clean parts of it, but everything else is on hold.

AN INTRODUCTION TO CHRISTIAN MEDITATIONSay the word 'meditation' and people get all sorts of, often weird, images being conjured up in their minds. Floating gurus, crossed legs, fingers raised in circles, humming! Some even regard it with suspicion, as to whether it OUGHT to have a place in the church at all, fearing what may take the place of ' an empty mind '!

SO, WHAT IS CHRISTIAN MEDITATION?Christian meditation is a form of prayer, closely linked to contemplative prayer.Prayer without words.More, just a ' drawing close ' to God, in silence, to seek Him/Her, and to grow in an awareness of (His) presence. It is only WHEN you start to practise this that you begin to become aware of the constant chattering going on in our minds. Focusing on something else, such as a candle flame, a word, a short phrase, a picture, or your breathing, helps enormously to still this commotion. Concentrating on your breathing especially, imagining that with every intake of breath you are breathing in God, or giving Him space to expand His presence within you, and with every exhalation you breath out yourself, with all your worries, fears, anxieties............in fact all things that weigh you down ........ helps you focus on God.Practiced by saints of old, desert fathers, monks, it is a Christian practice which has stood the test of time.St Julian of Norwich* described it as the highest form of worship. "When a soul holds onto God in trust - whether in seeking Him or contemplating Him - this is the highest worship it can bring", she said.We come to God, not waving our usual lists of all the things we need help with, we come just to BE with Him, just to BE in His presence. Those of us who have discovered it regard it as having found treasure. It is something all of us need. As important as sleep is, for the body to be restored, so meditation is for the mind, spirit and soul.Sleep is not just for the 'super-exhausted'.Meditation is not just for the 'super-stressed' or 'super-holy'. It is a path on which anyone can tread. At first the way may seem faint, and hard to find, but if you persevere in your practice of it, it will lead you to a place of calm. A place of shelter. A place where - even though chaos may be all around you - you can connect with an inner stillness that is God...anytime and anywhere.

*St Julian was what is called an anchoress. She spent her days living in a small cell off a church in Norwich. This room had one window looking out onto the church yard where people could come and receive her ministry, and another window into the church, so she could receive Holy Communion. It's a place of pilgrimage today.

TRINITY CHURCH have a well-established Christian meditation group, which, in usual circumstances, meets in Market Lavington from 6-7pm on the first Sunday of the month.

MOMENTS IN HISTORYRemembering VE Day

I had hoped that the village would be able to celebrate the anniversary of VE Day in May, but it looks as if this will not be possible because of the restrictions imposed by coronavirus.I had hoped to record people’s memories of the VE Day celebrations with a view to publishing another of my history books. This may still be possible. There will be people in their eighties who will remember the day from their childhood, and people in their nineties may well have more significant memories. So, while we are all having to cut back on our social activities, perhaps you can spend some time recording your memories with this in mind. And maybe you can go through your photographs to see if you have any of that time? It doesn’t matter where you were. I am looking for memories of Lavington people from whichever part of the country they were living at the time. Once you have had time to collect your memories, you can either write them down, or phone me and I can record them for you. If you have any photos, we can discuss the best way of getting those to me.The project will only go ahead if I get sufficient response, but it will be an interesting historic document.

Coronavirus DiaryWe are all currently living through some strange times. As a person in the at-risk category because of age and health conditions, Chris and I went into social distancing mode on Friday 13th March. I decided to keep a family diary about how the situation is affecting everyday life, not just for us, but for our children too. This will be of interest to the grand-children and great grandchildren in years to come. It is after all an historic event. It has occurred to me that a second diary of the event from a Lavington perspective might also be of interest. If you would be interested in contributing towards such a diary, please let me know. It is easy to say that if we are confined to our homes there isn’t much to report, but hopefully we will be talking to people on the phone and sharing experiences, and we will all be having reaction to the changes involved. In addition, there will be many people who will have to carry on working, or will be facing the difficulties of reduced incomes. There are stresses on NHS workers and retail staff as a result of the panic buying, and these should be recorded. And then, some of us will actually get the virus and it would be interesting to record how that feels. So, if you have anything to contribute on either of these fronts, please contact me. All profits from my local history books go to local charities.

WEST LAVINGTON IN TIMES PASTBetty Hooper, Ros Hooper’s mother, put together a wonderful collection of photos of life in and around West Lavington as it used to be prior to 1975 – so vivid and so real. They were put onto a CD in that year by Walter Burt and copies given to the church to sell. I bought my copy many years ago. Since then, they have been published in a series of three books written by Ros and available at either Amazon.co.uk or Devizes Books. They are far too good just to sit on my computer and need to be shared with a wider audience. A few will appear in future editions of News & Views. I hope you all enjoy them as much as I do.

Quentin Goggs

Pick it up or flick it - but don’t leave it behind to kill! There seem to be two schools of thought (or rather lack of thought) when it comes to cleaning up after your dog which, as a dog owner, make me equally cross. One is to bag the poo in plastic, tie it up neatly and then either leave it in situ or hang it helpfully on a bit of hedge, for the rest of us and the wildlife to cope with. I often wonder how such people would react to plastic bags full of poo being left on their land, or in their hedges. Now, I completely understand that walking along holding a bag full of warm poo is not the nicest of experiences. If this is what stops you picking up after your dog, you could try doing what they do in Devon, and flick the un-bagged deposit under a hedge, where it will happily biodegrade and cause no harm to anyone or anything. They even hang up flicking bats for use on the Coastal Path! I tend to empty my dog’s bag under my own hedges, and reuse or bin the empty bag. Rather more environmentally and socially friendly than leaving the plastic bag for nature to biodegrade in the next fifty years, or for the landowner to clear up after you.

The other school of thought is not to clean up after your dog at all, and just leave their deposit where it lies. Whilst this is extremely unfriendly and annoying to other walkers and landowners (especially those of us with gardens along a footpath), much more importantly, as I found out recently from our local farmer, dog’s poo can also be extremely dangerous if left on cattle grazing land. Your dog’s poo may contain a charming little parasite called Neospora, which is transmitted between dogs and cattle and is the leading cause of abortion in cattle in the UK.

Dogs become infected with Neospora after consuming the placenta or post-calving discharges of an infected cow (which I am afraid a lot of dogs do, even yours!), and subsequently begin to shed Neospora eggs in their faeces. It is important to know that worming your dog will not kill Neospora. Cattle consume the Neospora eggs on pasture, or in feed troughs or in water contaminated by the infected dog faeces. Cows infected with Neospora are 3-7 times more likely to abort than uninfected cows. Placenta and abortion materials are then a source of infection to other dogs, propagating the lifecycle of the parasite.

90% of dairy herds in the southwest of England have been infected with Neospora and theeggs remain a source of infection in the environment for up to six months.

I don’t think any dog owner would wish to be responsible for the abortion and death of calves. Farmers may have to destroy infected cows and their calves, which is an incredibly distressing thing to have to do. Our farmer has already had to do this, which is why he asked me if I could share this information. All we dog owners have to do is clear up after our pets, especially on grazing land, and the risk to calving cattle will be much reduced. So please, pick it up and dispose of it where it can biodegrade safely, well away from grazing land, or take your plastic bag home!

Following the Government’s upgraded advice, we have been forced, very regretfully, to cancel the planned Operatunity concert on May 9th. Our next

scheduled concert is the pianist Martin James Bartlett on June 27th, and we will be monitoring events to see what we need or can do near the time.

LAVINGTON COMMUNITY CHOIR Regretfully, we have decided to cancel our Thursday choir rehearsals at Market Lavington Community Hall until the current

health crisis is over. Our summer concert, scheduled for Friday July 10th at which we would have been performing ‘The Pied Piper of Hamelin’ will be postponed but it will definitely happen, maybe at Christmas or in July 2021, at this stage we cannot say. However, we are planning to hold a concert/singalong of some sort on July 10th so please keep the date.

ilA MESSAGE FROM RICHARD GAMBLE

Wiltshire Councillor for The Lavingtons & Erlestoke DivisionAs I write this, I recall that, a year ago at this time, I wrote about Brexit (or the absence of Brexit, as it was then). Remember that?Subsequently, we have had a change of Prime Minister and a general election. Remember those things? Since then, Brexit has been done (to some degree), and I subsequently put climate change and the risk of flooding at the top of my list of concerns for all of us and for Wiltshire Council. Really! How the world turns, and in so short a time!Climate change is not now top of my list of concerns. Just before I started writing this, I had been shopping in Devizes. My wife had asked me to buy toilet paper, as well as other things, but the toilet paper shelves were bare. There had been panic shopping in Devizes! Can you imagine the consequences if the Gamble household runs out? Better not think about it but we’re now beginning to be slightly apprehensive! And what about the financial markets? The last time the stock market collapsed by over 30% was in 1987, over 30 years ago and just after the Great Storm. At the time, I blamed the weather but subsequent analysis referred to “De-linked markets and index arbitrage”, “Portfolio insurance hedges”, “Noise trading” and “Margin calls and liquidity”. No, I don’t know what those are either. But what is happening now? Are my savings safe? My pension? Am I at risk of serious infection (actually, at my age, I think I may be). So, should I attend the Area Board – or anything? Should I go to County Hall? To church? To the shops? You may have the same concerns. But I sincerely hope that, in due course, we will all look back and smile. Most of us survived Black Monday 30 years ago without too much pain. Some of us are old enough to have survived Asian flu in 1957. Our ancestors (by definition) survived Spanish Flu in 1918. Life goes on!I think the main messages are: 1. Take reasonable precautions, 2. Follow advice and 3. Don’t panic.

Meanwhile, can you spare any loo paper?

You may contact me about this or any other matter by email to [email protected] or by phone on 07762 018209.

CHEVERELL MAGNA PARISH COUNCILHello All.

Well. If I thought Storm Ciara was fairly eventful, I wasn’t thinking hard enough.

Coronavirus-Covid19. Now, THAT’S truly eventful and we are living in unprecedented times. It has wiped pretty much every other topic off the national and international news and it has done the same with all the things I was going to talk about this month. So many things cancelled/rescheduled.

But one thing I will talk about is the Volunteer effort in the Parish. People are coming out from all over the Parish to offer their support to those who are in need of help during these very testing times. A huge thank you to all of them. Should anyone else within the Parish of Cheverell Magna like to Volunteer to help their community you’d be welcomed with open arms (OK. No hugging allowed. Just a bow and ‘Namaste’). Please contact me on [email protected] with your full name, address, and contacts (email, mobile and landline if you have one) and we’ll add you to the list.

On the ‘what did the Parish Council ever do for us’ front…. well…:

Well, they are the people who are co-ordinating the volunteer effort in Great Cheverell and they are all volunteers themselves. Many hours of thought and effort have gone into this and, I’m sure, much more to come. So, a big thank you to them too.

Updates about what is happening on the volunteer effort will be posted on the Great Cheverell Parish Council Facebook Page and on the Website. Please check here regularly for the latest information. These will be the fastest ways of getting information to the Community.

Facebook Page address: https://www.facebook.com/groups/198785743958067/Parish Council Website: https://www.greatcheverell.org/index.php

And, with that, I’ll stop for now. Take care of yourselves. Until next time and may your God be with you.

Corona Virus: Well, I almost do not know where to start! What a difference a month makes, so much has happened, but I must say a very big THANK YOU to my fellow councilors and volunteers from the villages who have swung into action and produced and distributed

the Help leaflet to every household in the parish. And also a big thank you to the team at Dauntsey School who printed and stapled over 500 leaflets ready for collection in less than four hours. The information contained in the leaflet is also available on the parish council website, www.westlavington.org.uk Thank you too to those of you who have registered with us to help, and I am sure all of you will look out for your friends and neighbours, especially those who have been told to isolate or are self-isolating and if you need help with essential shopping, collecting medication or want a chat, please do not hesitate to call the parish helpline: 07979 071 737

The Annual Spring Clean and the Annual Parish Meeting have been cancelled, but may be rearranged later in the year. The situation is changing so fast that even details in this article may be out of date by the time you read it, but we will endeavour to keep our website as up to date as possible. We are investigating the way we hold our monthly Parish Council Meetings and these may take place using modern conferencing technology (depending on legislation being passed) but we will still publish notice of the meetings on the notice board by the shop and on the website and you can still contact us by email or phone.

A360 closure: The A360 will be closed from 8th – 24th April between 0900 and 1600 between Gore Cross and Tilshead (Westdown Camp). See separate entry in N&V and under Notices on the website.

Village Hall Car Park: The facilities of the Recreation Ground, Village Hall, Youth Club, Robert’s Playground and BMX track benefit from the parking area adjacent to the village hall, as well as support the primary and pre-school during pick-up and drop-off times during term time. As many of you will know, the car park surface has deteriorated and the Parish Council is investigating the cost of: repairing, or resurfacing, marking out the bays, improving drainage and possibly slightly extending the area which we think will enhance the facilities of the whole area and provide more spaces by ensuring drivers park and use the space in the most efficient way. What we are able to do will depend on the cost, but we will do the best we can with the funds available to improve it. One improvement will be a brighter PIR light on the end of the hall to light up the carpark at night, we realize that this may impact those houses on Sandfield which face the village hall, and we would be grateful if any householder has a concern that they contact me or our Clerk to discuss, [email protected] or 07782 251464.Should you see any antisocial behaviour especially around the village hall/playing field or have concerns please do not hesitate to contact 101 to report, as this does help to “build a picture”. The police have also been visiting the area more often.

Steps: The new steps from Mill Lane onto the Recreation ground to improve the access are almost completed with metal handrails and wider treads. I am sure you will agree that this is now a much safer way onto the field.

Post Office: Most of you will be aware that the Costcutters shop has changed hands recently and the Council was made aware that the post office facility was not being carried on. It is very important for our residents to have and keep this facility in our community and so following discussions with the Regional Post Office Change Manager and the new owners, I am very pleased to say that the post office is now open again so I hope that you will all support the owners and continue to use the post office and shop, especially at this very challenging time for all small local services and businesses.

Cleaning War Memorial: The memorial at All Saints’ Church was last cleaned about 10 years ago, but a combination of traffic fumes and algae has discolored it badly. The Parish Council is arranging for the memorial to be cleaned by an expert and when that is completed, an additional name will be engraved on it.

Planning: New Applications: 20/01616/FUL Woodbridge Mill Farm new agricultural access on Cheverell Road; 20/01630/LBC Manor House, Wick Lane LP, rebuilding walled garden wall; 20/00978/FUL 74 High St LP new vehicular access, driveway etc. Decisions: 20/00274/FUL 94 High Street, LP, demolition of attached garage and sun room. Erected new extension to the front and rear elevations and a new detached garage/garden store (revised proposal following 19/06724/FUL). Approved with conditions.

Open Green Spaces and Green Infrastructure: About 4 years ago, Wiltshire Council collected data related to open space provision in our area, and these details are now being brought up to date. The parish council will be completing the survey using as a basis the Local Green Spaces identified in our Neighbourhood Plan. Local households can also take part in this survey of green spaces they care about and there will be details on our website and notice board shortly. There is a vacancy on the parish council and we would like you to consider volunteering to help your community in this way – if you would like to know more about the role, please do contact me.

Best wishes to you all and stay well and safe.Julia Ford, Chair, Parish Council

LAVINGTON PRE-SCHOOL In the lead up to Easter the children at Lavington Pre-school have

been having a very busy time! We have focused our investigations around different modes of transport. We have talked about lots of

different types of transport from helicopters to boats, we have read lots of books and created buses with cardboard boxes. This term we

have celebrated Pancake day by eating lots of pancakes and having a pancake race; we ate potato cakes on St Patrick’s day, and we got very

creative for Mother’s Day. We hope everyone enjoyed their Mother’s Day gifts.

During the week of World Book Day, the children and staff made a huge effort to come in as their favourite book characters and bring in their most loved books, we had characters ranging from the ‘Where’s Wally’ to ‘Alice in Wonderland’. We would like to say thank you to everyone for their efforts that week, the children really do enjoy it and the inventiveness of some of the outfits was greatly admired. During Book Week we were delighted to welcome Mike Peet into the Pre-school, he came in and read a story to the children who are always pleased to see a new face! Once the worries of coronavirus have passed, we would welcome visitors to our setting to read to the children, please get in touch if you would like to come and see us.The following week was Sport Relief week and the children could come to pre-school in their sportswear, we did this for the full week to allow all the children to be involved. We raised a total of £22 for Sport Relief.

During these exceptional times we have been talking to the children about the importance of washing our hands and they have enjoyed singing happy birthday whilst doing so. We always practise good hygiene within the pre-school, but it has been useful to reiterate how to wash our hands effectively and why we do it. Unfortunately, due to these ongoing health concerns, we have postponed our trip to Dauntsey House Care Home and our Sponsored Trike Ride which was due to take place on 1st April, both will be rearranged once it is safe to do so.

NEWS FROM HOLY TRINITY C OF E PRIMARY ACADEMY

The Learning ContinuesDue to the Covid-19 pandemic, our school is closed to most children until further notice. Whilst we are sad about the closure, and will miss the children, we have taken up the challenge of presenting exciting and engaging distance learning with enthusiasm.

One of our parents who is very good at all things to do with technology has helped us set up an online Virtual Learning Platform from which teachers can engage with children each day by setting work, assessing submitted assignments and helping with projects. Our children are very keen to use this system and are motivated to continue with their learning. Although not ideal, our hope is that, with staff and children working very hard, we will continue with the learning journey for each one. Children will do maths, reading and writing and also will have projects to complete at home – we have sent home sewing kits, seed growing kits, clocks and all sorts of lovely things so that children can enjoy a variety of learning experiences. We encourage them to keep active each day and to do something creative every day – lego, cardboard box dens, painting and drawing, modelling… the list is almost endless. We also encourage children to take virtual tours of museums and art galleries. And each day children will be encouraged to engage with a moment of reflection and stillness, which will be posted on the virtual learning platform. We are, of course, open to the children in our school whose parents are key workers – NHS staff, police, delivery people and so on. It is a privilege to be able to support our key workers in this way as they fight to keep us well and safe. Never before in the history of our country has the Government closed all schools – so this is very new to all of us. But with resilience and courage we will get through this. Our prayers and good wishes are with all those who are profoundly affected by the pandemic.

If you think your child would enjoy being at our school, please phone us and chat to the Headteacher. There is lots of information on our website www.holy-trinity.co.uk and our phone number is 01380 813796.

ST THOMAS A BECKET SCHOOLWith faith and nurture we flourish

At this unprecedented time in our history sadly I am unable to give you details of upcoming activities at our lovely school as, like schools all over the country we are not quite sure what the future will bring. However what we do know is that whatever we face we will face it as a team and smiling in order to provide the very best for all of our children. We are currently planning for reduced hours for a handful of children whose parents are key workers. Activities planned will keep those children happy and safe while their parents continue to do an amazing job for us all.The last month saw everyone throwing themselves into their topics with huge enthusiasm. Kestrel and Chough Class have been studying ‘Crime and Punishment’ which has included a visit from our local Police Community Support Officer who let the children take their own fingerprints. Chough children are now experts on the barbaric practices of The Romans and have been researching to write extended biographies of Robin Hood. Kestrel Class have studied the poem The Highwayman, focusing on character and we have been blown away by the standard of their writing in the children’s retelling of familiar tales from different character’s points of view. Skylark Class have embraced our wonderful natural world in their topic of ‘At the bottom of the garden’ and have been busy growing seeds, planning gardens and exploring nature.

World book day saw some amazing costumes in school and the children spent the day in mixed groups engaged in music, art and drama as they delved into new stories. The level of competition entries was fantastic as the pupils designed settings of their favourite stories. Fittingly the day ended with our PTFA movie night for the children. Here at St Thomas à Becket we send out our very best wishes to you and your families and hope you all stay safe and well.If you have any queries please contact us on [email protected]

When life returns to normal we look forward to welcoming visitors to our school - if you think your child would enjoy learning with us here please contact us as above. Our website can be found at www.st-thomas-a-becket.wilts.sch.uk and our phone number is 01980 620435.

WEST LAVINGTON YOUTH CLUBIn line with all the government recommendations, the Youth Club sessions have been closed until further notice. With schools closing as well, this is perhaps an unfortunate time to have to take this step, but for members and for staff, it is the only possible action we can take. As soon as it is possible to reopen, we will tell you, but since we normally close during the summer holidays anyway, it is possible we may not restart until September.

The Committee, West Lavington Youth Club

WEST LAVINGTON YOUTH CLUB TREASURERI have been the treasurer of the youth club for more than fifteen years and am now in somewhat feeble health. I am aware that I am now unable to perform the treasurer’s duties as well as I would wish, and I need to pass this function on to someone younger and more capable. At the present time the youth club is closed because of the coronavirus crisis, so it would be a good time to transfer to someone else. Please, is there anyone out there who would be willing to keep these simple accounts? You don’t have to be an accountant, and you don’t have to deal with day to day running of the youth club. Please contact me if you can spare a few hours a month to take over from me.

Are you concerned about how you can do more to protect the environment? At a packed meeting in the Village Hall on 9th March we were delighted to welcome Justina Pettifer

from The Healthy Life Co who spoke to us about Sustainable Shopping.Justina, who previously had worked in environmental waste management, took over management of the store in Little Brittox, Devizes ten years ago. The aim of the Company is to move towards a zero waste shop and they have already started to move towards this goal. They do NOT use single-use plastic and all their seeds and nuts are being packaged in plant based packaging. A new refill service is now available. Customers can take their own containers along, whether it is a glass jar, paper bag, metal lunch tin or plastic tub (as long as it isn’t single-use) and fill up as little or as much as they like of seeds, nuts, dried fruit, flour and porridge oats. This is then charged by the weight of the product, minus the weight of the container. In addition, there is a refill station for cleaning essentials such as washing up liquid, fabric softener, laundry liquid, toilet cleaner, multipurpose household cleaners and hand soap. It is planned to add to the service throughout the year. The mission of the company is to provide a wider choice to health and planet conscious consumers. Their vision is to provide a more friendly local shopping experience. So why not call in and meet their friendly staff, who will be happy to talk about their Company. (Don’t forget to take your container for a fill up!). If you can’t find what you are looking for in the shop, they do have more items available on-line. Their website address is: www.yourhealthylifeshop.co.uk Items can be ordered on-line and will be ready for collection from the shop at 4, Little Brittox, Devizes, the following day.Janet Hodges thanked Justina, on behalf of all those present, for such an interesting talk and enjoyable afternoon. Although there was no Mothering Sunday Service, flowers from the Mothers’ Union were delivered to all the churches through the Benefice. There will be no Meeting in April in view of the current Coronavirus situation.

We started our March meeting with another reminder that we would be holding our annual plant sale in May and when planting seeds for our own use we were encouraged to include some extra to grow plants for the sale. Then our local weather recorder gave a brief update. We were delighted to

learn that so far(up to February 2020) our seasonal rainfall had not beaten previous recent records. Our speaker for the evening was Millie Carmichael. Millie had given several interesting talks to our club before. This time she was talking about her involvement with Transition Marlborough and in particular the project to establish bee highways-the Bee Roadzz project. The talk began on a low note pointing out the rapid decline in pollinators and other insects that had taken place in our lifetime. Gone are the days when our windscreens would become covered with insects when we were driving. Gone too are the times when you would see swarms of insects around the streetlights at night. Various things have contributed to the decline including the loss of wildflower meadows, the loss of hedgerows and increased use of pesticides and the increase in urbanisation. Unfortunately we often do not know what we have lost as the identification of insects and monitoring of their numbers is a relatively recent phenomenon. Before we all descended into a slough of despondency Millie pointed out that there was hope. There were plenty of local and nationwide initiatives in which we could take part. Some involved citizen science and others involved changing little things in the way that you gardened or looked after wild spaces in your community. Whatever you do, no matter how little, would make a significant contribution when coupled with the efforts of everyone else. Your garden and community spaces could become part of a nationwide bee highway by becoming a pit stop for insects. If there are no local initiatives for you to join Millie said that there are plenty of websites where you can gather information. These include Buglife UK, Friends of the Earth, The Bumble Bee Conservation Trust and Bwars. The Bwars website has a 10 minute insect monitoring project. Details are on their website, but basically you sit down for 10 minutes in your garden and monitor what insects you see visiting a fixed area during 10 minutes! Gardeners need to take a break from their labours and this sounds like fun and it is taking part in citizen science. If it is too wet to get out into the garden you could always while away an hour looking at the Bumble Bee Conservation website where there are lists of bee friendly flowers for all seasons. The Buglife site has maps of B-lines showing how insect corridors are being established. The Transition Marlborough Group are coordinating with them to document the B-lines in our area. Buglife value the input from local groups with local knowledge and expertise to help in their work. Locals may have been monitoring woodland, valleys, riverbanks and roadside verges for some time.Someone in the audience asked why there were so many different organisations and would it not be better if they combined forces. Millie replied that they had different specialities but many common goals and that there was a lot of co-operation.It was a very thought provoking talk. The loss of diversity in plants and insects is a worrying trend but Millie gave us hope that the small things that we did to improve the situation locally would make a significant contribution to the overall picture. Our next meeting is on Tuesday 14 April. Stephanie Hafferty, on a return visit, will be talking about How to Grow a Bar Garden. We meet at Great Cheverell Village hall, at 7.15 for a 7.30pm start. New members are always welcome.

TRINITY CHURCH , MARKET LAVINGTON

Trinity church are sorry to announce that, following government and denominational guidelines to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus, our regular church services in The Community Hall are temporarily suspended. We are still active in our local community, with support being offered through St Arbucks cafe.As this notice goes to press, we are at the point of resourcing up a scheme to help out.

Minister: Revd Gary Gotham. 69 Queens Road, Devizes, SN10 5HR Tel 01380 724264 / [email protected] secretary : Julia Garraway-Jones. 01380 81840 [email protected]

St.Arbucks St. Arbucks was intending to stay OPEN, as we know that for many people the social aspect is important. However, we must adhere to government instructions and close the café for the time being. This decision will be reviewed monthly as the current emergency develops. We hope that in time we will be open again, maybe with reduced opening times to begin with.We will very much miss being a part of the everyday lives of people in the village and hope that things will be back to some form of normality as soon as possible. Look after each other as much as you can and find other ways to stay in touch.

EBENEZER BAPTIST CHURCH Easter: A Matter of Life and Death?

Bill Shankly the famous Liverpool football manager once quipped, “Some people think football is a matter of life and death. I assure you, it’s much more serious than that.” Maybe not. As I write elite football matches across the UK have been suspended until at least 3 April, “subject to conditions at the time”. Evidently Mr. Shankly didn’t envisage the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic that is currently ravaging the world and causing havoc to sporting fixtures. The government has now put additional measures in place to try and halt, or, at least manage the spread of the virus. After all, at least for some, this is a matter of life and death. People are getting jumpy. The constant stream of news updates on our TVs and phones means there’s no escaping the coronacrisis. Some are panic buying, although the shops are doing their best to keep shelves stocked with food and essential goods. In the midst of all this, celebrating Easter may seem a bit frivolous. Some might say, ‘This is no time for bunnies, bonnets and choccy eggs.’ Although, a little innocent diversion may not go amiss in these stressful times. But the Christian message of Easter is not a bit of fluffy escapism to take our minds off things. As we ponder the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ we are reminded that God himself has entered our world of suffering. In his book, Dominion: The Making of the Western Mind, the historian Tom Holland writes, “To be a Christian is to believe that God became man, and suffered a death as terrible as any mortal has ever suffered. This is why the cross, that ancient instrument of torture, remains what it always has been: the fitting symbol of the Christian revolution.” The “Christian revolution” as Holland calls it overturned the values of the ancient world. The poor and needy were no longer regarded as expendable when plagues swept through cities. The Emperor Julian was deeply opposed to the Christian faith. Yet he grudgingly had to admit that followers of Jesus would look after all the sick, not only their believing friends. This attracted even more people to the faith, much to Julian’s annoyance. Today we take it for granted that vulnerable people will receive the care they need when disease strikes. The cross of Jesus is a symbol of love and self-sacrifice. Jesus said to his followers, “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” Jesus came into our world of suffering and brokenness to die for our sins that we might be forgiven by faith in him. But suffering and death did not have the last word. On the first Easter Sunday Jesus arose from the dead and met with his disciples. They were left distraught by his death, thinking all was lost. On appearing to his followers Jesus spoke words of reassurance that calmed their troubles souls, “Do not be afraid”, “Peace be with you.” We need to hear those words afresh in these anxious days. What happened at Easter really was a matter of life and death. More serious than that, by his death and resurrection Jesus offers the hope of everlasting life to those who put their faith in him. The believer can be confident that nothing can separate them from the love of God. As the apostle Paul wrote, “For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation [including viruses!], will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Our regular church services have been suspended in light of the government’s measures to combat coronavirus. Our church website will be updated to let people know when we are able to meet once more. The website also includes contact information should anyone need any help at this time.
