NEWS BRAKE Livingston As Great Lakes Region - Model A Restorer’s Club April 2019 Director Dan Samson’s Message Hello Members and Friends Well, I got my first drive of the season in the ‘A’, the other day and knock-on-wood, things are making all the right sounds and she feels solid as a rock and we hope to put many fun miles on it this year! The only thing worse for wear is some peeling paint that Mr. Winter was not kind to, but as far as I’m concerned we’ll add that to the list to worry about another day. Kari and just returned from a wonderful week in Tulum, Mexico and if we weren’t so excited to get the 2019 driving season underway, we may have stayed for another week and really tried to put a dent in their Rum supply! We enjoyed the warm weather together, some time on the beach, and found our noses in a few good books we’ve been meaning to read all year. Well worth the price of admission. It looks like we have a good variety of events coming together this summer for all to enjoy. First will be the Dust Off tour to take place Sunday April 14th, We will begin by meeting at Big Boy in Brighton @10AM for breakfast, and then have a leisurely drive over to the Howell Nature Center to enjoy a pleasant nature walk and fresh air with friends. Please contact me for any questions. The second event on my radar is the Michigan Round-Up May 2-4, hosted by Muskegon Port Side Model ‘A’ Region at the Shoreline Inn & Conference Center in Muskegon. Fred Tryles is planning to lead a group going there and it is sure to be a wonderful visit to Lake Michigan and a chance to reunite with some old friends on the west side of our great state! We hope to represent with a nice group to go along, so please contact Fred or myself for information. I would like to say a big thank our new Web Master, Michael Clewley for creating a new and easier way for everyone to access the Livingston A's (Hemmings) website as well as uploading some new content we can share among our members.. You can now use the shortcut www.livingstonas.com Mike is a Project Manager and does work in IT and Software Development fields. Please thank him for sharing his expertise for the benefit of our group when you see him! At the last meeting the new LED headlight bulbs which fit into the factory lightbulb sockets were brought to my attention, as well as the fact that the supplier was out of stock for a time. I inquired right away, and just received an email today 4/8/19 that they are now in stock and available for shipment from our friends at www.snydersantiqueauto.com ,to order reference part number A-13007-LED. Until we meet again, take care. MAFFI Newsletter Minute What’s new at the Museum?   The museum has recently been gifted with a very early - A-1276 - Light Delivery Model A by the family of Ron Rude from Quincy, CA. This is a very unique vehicle. The May-June 2012 issue of the Model A News featured the Rude Early Delivery as part of the coverage of the MARC National Meet in San Diego. The vehicle has very low mileage, has a number of very early features and will be a great addition for the Museum. Mr. Rude's son has also forwarded all the files and information that his father accumulated so we will have a complete history of the restoration and other details. Make every effort to attend this year’s Model A Day on September 21st to see this and many other “Unique & Original” cars that will be featured. For more information on Model A Day, contact Jerry Morrissey:  [email protected].

Touring Class - Invitation from Class Chair Stan Sorrels

 of 4 8

The MARC Dearborn National Meet will be a fabulous event. It creates a special opportunity to celebrate a great American and a great automobile. Keeping the Model A Ford legacy alive and strong is our contribution to remember an important time in our heritage.

Tens of thousands of Model A’s still travel the American roads. The car is one of the most recognizable ever produced. Driving and sharing our cars around town, on tours and at shows are the lifeblood of the hobby and the car.

MARC created Touring Class in 1995. Its purpose is to nationally recognize those authentic appearing and well maintained Model A’s that are driven. Hundreds of great cars attend a National Meet and as such should be recognized. The Touring Class Committee has a unique and transparent set of judging standards that balances authenticity and drivability. Since accessories are not judged, some of the driving conveniences and extras owner have added to their car will not be a factor on judging day. As a car owner, you become part of the judging process.

We are expecting a great turnout at Dearborn and ask that you join us. Enrolling your Model A in Touring Class is done through registration for the National Summer Meet in the Model A News. The Touring Class Judging Standards are available through the MARC office.

Hope to see you at Dearborn on the Touring Field. Please share this information with your region and friends. If you need additional information or just want to talk about MARC’s Touring Class Event,

’28 Portfolio from VMCCA One of our members passed away and his family donated interesting Model A-related literature that perhaps one of your members might be interested in. It's a reproduction 1928 Model A portfolio created by The Archive of the American Automobile, meant as a commemorative piece that is semi-collectable. No one in our club (VMCCA) has a 1928 so perhaps it would be of interest to one of your members. Not trying to get a lot for it as all proceeds go to the VMCCA Student Scholarship Foundation. Will consider any reasonable offer. Thanks!

The bartender asks, “Would you like them all in one glass?” “No”, says Joe. “I have two brothers out west and whenever I drink, I have a shot for them both.” Joe does this every day for a few weeks then one day he comes in and orders only two whiskeys. The bartender asks, “Did something happened to one of your brothers?” “No”, says Joe, “I’ve just decided to quit drinking.” —Reader’s Digest, March 2019

Editor’s Corner Happy Spring, Happy Easter, and Happy all other “new life” Spring celebrations! For us northerners, the weather is FINALLY getting warm, the salt is mostly washed off the streets by wind and rain, and the muddy roads are starting to dry up. It’s time to breathe new life into our cars and get them shaken down for a summer of touring and shows. The Livingston A’s dust-off tour is set for April 14. My ’28 has been under it’s cover, cocooning for the winter and safe from the dust I am creating while sanding some wood projects in my barn. I think today is the day I uncover it and take it for a ride. I did start it mid-winter as a demo for a colleague from Germany. He was absolutely thrilled that this 91-year-old mechanical wonder functioned so perfectly. We started it with the hand-crank too. He couldn’t believe how easily he was able to start it.

I love these cars!

Follow-up: I did take it out today. Started and ran great. Brought smiles to everybody I passed in my small town, and also to the friends I dropped in on. :) We all went for a ride and they wanted to stop by their dad’s house to show him this blast from his past.

Everybody loves these cars!
