Ltd. in association with the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, Govt. of India, Govt. of Andhra Pradesh and other lead partners from the government, private sector and donor agencies. The three day forum from 4-6 August 2010 offered NIOS to showcase its services and products in an exhibition both in the e-India 2010 exhibition area. It also offered aggressive branding of NIOS as an Education Partner both online, print and on all conference promotional material. School Education India 2010 was hosted as part of e-India 2010. The first session focused on the provisions and hindrance in implementation of Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA) Programme and role of ICT in its facilitation. Chairman, NIOS, Dr. S.S. Jena gave a presentation on ICT in Open Schooling in the context of RMSA. He spoke about the challenges in the field, course delivery system, augmentation of learning resources, Public Private Partnership (PPP) and ICT based resource support for Open Schooling. In the session meant to discuss the effective use of ICT tools in School Education, Dr. Sushmita Mitra, Director (SSS), NIOS spoke about how ICT has changed learning into a 24×7 process. She elaborated that technologies available today and traditional pedagogy are bound to have some tensions as they are different in terms of activities done, type of learning (collaborative vs instructional), creativity, integration of theory and practice and evaluation. In the IGNOU Special Session on Skills and Vocational Literacy: Technology Enhanced Employment, Dr. Jena highlighted certain basic facts about India in the skill development framework. NIOS-NLMA, DAE Examinations The examination of National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) - National Literacy Mission Authority (NLMA) Department of Adult Education (DAE), Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) was organized on 20 August 2010 all over the country. whereby both vocational and academic inputs would begiven to the students enrolled in the innovative centers.

1. Mainstreaming school dropouts with NIOS certificationtill Senior Secondary.

2. Value addition to the conventional school subjects withthat of skill training.

3. Value addition to the conventional skill training throughschool education for better livelihood.

4. Certification of FVTRS trainers through NIOS for skilltraining.

FVTRS is a Bangalore based NGO working for theunorganised sector since 1993, and registered underSocieties Act in 2004. Currently, FVTRS has 102 projectsrunning in various States for a committed number of 18000youth with varying course durations for different trades.

In the first phase, FVTRS has identified 40 of itsinstitutions, who will submit their applications foraccreditation to NIOS . In this connection, a meeting washeld in Bangalore on 7th August 2010 to address thecoordinators of these 40 centers and familiarise them withthe process and methodology of NIOS functioning.

The NIOS Chairman, Dr S.S. Jena and Dr. MamtaSrivastava, Dy. Director (VED) attended the meeting.

Participation in the Global Skills SummitDr. K.P Wasnik, Director (VED) and Ms. Koushalya Barik,Asst. Director, (VED) participated in the third global skillssummit organized by Federation of Indian Chambers ofCommerce and Industry (FICCI) on Aug 19-20, 2010 inNew Delhi. The focus of the summit was on promotion ofrural employment through skill development.

The participants of the summit deliberated upon the qualityand relevance of skill development, periodic review target,revision of policy, enhancement of quality of training,standardization and enforcement of quality standards,public private participation in vocational education andlearning from international experiences in the field ofvocational education.

Capacity Building Workshop for TutorsA three day “Capacity Building workshop for Tutors”was organised by National Institute of Open Schooling(NIOS) under the UNFPA supported AdolescenceEducation Programme(AEP) from 17th Sep.-19th Sep. 2010at Jaipur. The workshop was organised at GovernmentSenior Secondary School, Adarsh Nagar, Jaipur (AIno:170080). The chief guest, Mr. B.R Dayama, Secretary,Rajasthan Open School, inaugurated the workshop bylighting the traditional lamp. The Principal of the school,Mr.Abdul Salim Khan welcomed the guests. Mr. M.S.Lamba, Regional Director (NIOS) Jaipur and Asst. Director

Ashok Kumar Sharma were also present in the workshop.The occasion marked the launch of library facilities forNIOS learners and tutors. A package of NIOS studymaterials and Audio/ video programmes were gifted to theprincipals for their libraries with the objective of reachingout to NIOS learners. Ms. Asheema Singh, ProjectCoordinator (AEP), Noida presented the aims and objectivesof the workshop. Different sessions of the workshopincluding introduction to Life Skills and its importance inevery day life, importance of Personal Contact Programme(PCP) in open distance education, methodologies ofconducting PCPs etc. were also discussed. Assistanttrainer, Mr. Sajal Bhardwaj from St. Mary’s Inter College,Agra energized the participants with many interestingactivities. A mock personal contact programme (PCP) inselected subjects (Social Science, Hindi, Science andHome Science) was organized by the participants usingvarious methodologies like role-play, case study etc. Thegroup actively discussed each subject and session forinternalizing and better understanding. All the sessionsheld during the workshop made a good impact on the groundof clarity of subject and training techniques. The workshopwas successful in sensitizing 30 tutors from Rajasthan tothe critical needs of an NIOS learner and the support theyrequire. The tutors were also trained to organize aneffective Personal Contact Programme (PCP) using theparticipatory techniques. The program concluded with thedistribution of certificates to all the participants. A pledgewas taken by the participants that they will provide bothacademic and psychological support to NIOS learners byconducting interactive PCPs.

Tele-Orientation Programme forCoordinators of Accredited Institutions(AIs) of NIOS

An Orientation Programme for the Coordinators of AIs ofNIOS was organized through Tele Conference by NIOSwith the help of physical infrastructure of EMPC, IGNOUand NIOS Regional Centres/Study Centres on 23rd

The Orientation Programme was conducted at thirty-eightdestinations all over the country out of which 31 Siteswere of IGNOU and 7 Sites were of NIOS Regional Centres/Study Centres.

The theme of the Orientation Programme was to discussthe role and functions of AIs highlighting the importanceof Personal Contact Programmes (PCPs), Tutor MarkedAssignments (TMAs), On-Demand Examination Scheme(ODES), Public examinations and other related issues.

The Co-ordinators interacted with NIOS officials throughtelephone and faxed questions on the following aspects:

• Availability of study materials

• Conduct of PCPs

• Madrasa/Minority Institutions

• Admission procedures

• TMA and its weightage

• Environmental Education
