My thoughts are with his familyat this difficult time.David was a source of sound advice and counsel for me since myselection as a Parliamentary candidate. I felt privileged when David told me last year that hewas honoured that I was representing him as his MP. He will be sadlymissed by all who knew him."

Conor Burns MP supports the International

    Diabetes Federation in raising awareness

    of diabetes in Parliament

Conor Burns MP raising awareness of diabetes with DeirdreKyne Grzebalski of the International Diabetes Federation.

This week Conor joined volunteers from the International DiabetesFederation (IDF), Bayer and Novo Nordisk to raise awareness of theincreasing prevalence of diabetes in the UK. The Bournemouth West

MP attended a diabetes testing event in Parliament following on fromthe success of World Diabetes Day held last November.Diabetes is a significant and growing health issue, affecting over 300million people worldwide. The IDF believes that, unless action istaken, this could rise to 500 million within a generation. The IDF andits member organisations which include Diabetes UK is working toimprove the political and public awareness of the diabetes pandemicand the critical interventions that are necessary to counter it.

Around 2.9 million people have been diagnosed with diabetes in theUK, but it is estimated that a further 850,000 people may be living withthe condition without realising it . This means that around 1 in 16people in the UK are living with the disease or approximately 5,770people in the average constituency. If diagnosed early, diabetes canbe actively managed to help mitigate the serious consequences of thedisease.Conor said: Im delighted to be supporting the work of theInternational Diabetes Federation in raising awareness of diabetes inParliament. Diabetes is a growing health problem both in the UK andaround the world, but if it is detected early then it can be activelymanaged. I would encourage anyone who is concerned aboutdiabetes to speak to their GP about having a blood glucose test, as Idid yesterday. It only takes a few minutes, but it could save you yearsof illness.

Sir Michael Hirst, President-Elect of the IDF said: We welcome thesupport of Conor Burns MP in raising awareness of diabetes throughour parliamentary event. Last November millions of people around theglobe came together to mark World Diabetes Day. We hope that thetwo-day event helps create further awareness in the UK of thecondition and its consequences.Commenting on the event, Viggo Birch, Managing Director of NovoNordisk Ltd said: At Novo Nordisk, we are committed to fightingdiabetes and advancing diabetes care for the benefit of the growingnumbers of people living with the condition. The public, private andthird sectors must continue working together to make progress in thefight against the diabetes pandemic. Awareness days such as this are

a step towards ensuring that those living with this chronic disease inthe UK, receive the optimum care that they truly deserve.A Bayer spokesperson said: As a market leader in the field of bloodglucose monitoring systems, Bayer is delighted to be involved in theInternational Diabetes Federation awareness day. Diabetes is anissue that affects people across the UK. By working closely withMembers of Parliament, we hope they will take the message back totheir constituents and aid in raising awareness.

    Wind farm substation exhibition date

    releasedSalisbury Journal

Saturday 21st January 2012Public exhibition dates have been revealed for an off-shore wind farm, which would have a substation between Three Legged Cross andWest Moors.

Eneco plans to build 150 to 240 turbines in Poole Bay as part of theNavitus Bay Wind Park plans. The scheme has caused concern among many members of thecommunity including MPs, sailing clubs and residents.Recently Eneco carried out exploratory drilling at Chewton Bunny inHighcliffe to investigate possible cable routes for the turbines. It hasbeen revealed that power from the wind farm could be channelled intothe national grid at Three Legged Cross.Eneco said there are two possible sites for its substation with land

south of the existing Mannington substation at Holt Road and a ploteast of West Moors Road.Criticised MPs including Bournemouth Wests Conor Burns , SouthDorsets Richard Drax and North Dorsets Bob Walters have criticisedthe plans. The proposed site for the turbines is designed to swing the massivegenerators inshore, roughly the same distance out as the Needles.Christchurch Sailing Club has also expressed concern, withCommodore Rick Thompson saying: They couldnt have picked aworst place in the British Isles.

The turbines would have a tip height of 163 metres (535ft). The land isowned by Crown Estates and the final say rests with the government. The company intends to apply for permission in 2013, planningconsent in 2015 and start creating the 150-240 turbine farm a yearlater. It would open in 2019 and with a capacity of up to 1,200 MW itcould generate power for 615,000 to 820,000 homes.Enecos project director Chris Sherrington said the wind farm couldbring in tourists. At a meeting with Bournemouth councillors last year he said the windfarm had been a hit with tourists and residents Great Yarmouth, swelling numbers at the visitors centre to 35,000 a year. The organisation says they are sensitive to the issues and understandthe scheme is very much a personal thing but will create jobs, contracts and services. A public exhibition will be held at West MoorsMemorial Hall on Tuesday, February 28, from 2pm to 8pm.
