Dear Parents, A blast of activities was conducted in January. Chinese New Year celebra- tion was spectacular; Mandarin Spelling Bee and Spelling Bee in English were challenging; and Math Quiz Bee was even more exigent! This year, we are hoping that a clean slate brings - a chance to do things over, make things right or simply shoot for something better. We are mov- ing forward with the lessons that will serve us all in good stead. We are just as excited as you are for a year of fun and exciting experiences for all our students and for all of us in general. Best regards, Tatie H. Agus FROM THE DIRECTOR Sekolah Mentari Grand Surya celebrates Chinese New Year A Barongsai Performance (two big dragons) was conducted to kick off the Chinese New Year celebration and recognize the Year of the Dragon. It was done in the Bas- ketball Court at our school on Friday morning and watched by both preschool and elementary students. They were so eager to give a red envelope or red packet (known as hóngbāo) to the dragons, a monetary gift which is given during holidays or special occasions. The red color of the envelope symbolizes good luck and is sup- posed to ward off evil spirits. It was followed by a Mandarin Spelling Bee which was participated in by contestants from the different levels. The winners were: Grade 1 Grade 2 Grade 3 Grade 4 Grade 5 First: Jason Luman Ophelia Felicia Quincy Dhira Aviana Second: Raylen Giovanni Kenzie Steven Michelle Third: Giselle Christabella Chievas Vincent Salvia CONGRATULATIONS!!! It was concluded by a short program with presentations from the different classes. The students, teachers and staff alike looked stunning in their Chinese attire! Days prior to the celebration, the school recognized the international celebration with an impressive array of activities incorporating elementary school students. Tra- ditional Chinese decorations adorned the hallways and classrooms. Sekolah Mentari Grand Surya hosts Soccer Friendly Match

Sekolah Mentari Grand Surya Soccer Team and SD Galatia Bambu Larangan Soccer Team had a friendly match last Tuesday, 31 January 2012 in our school ground. It aimed to provide players with instruction in the fundamentals and rules of the game, while stressing the importance of sportsmanship and teamwork. Keep up your spirits boys!!!
