Since 1992, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) has been annually observed on 3rd December around the world.The theme for this 2019 IDPD is ‘promoting the participation of persons with disabilities and their leadership: taking action on the 2030Development Agenda’. The theme focuses on the empowerment of persons with disabilities for inclusive, equitable and sustainabledevelopment as envisaged in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which pledges to ‘leave no one behind’ and recognizesdisability as a cross-cutting issues, to be considered in the implementation of its 17 Sustainable Development Goals. HANDS team underHANDS Independent Living Centre (ILC) and SAYA Independent Living Centre (ILC) celebrated the day and organized different walksand events to raise the awareness about this day and to encourage people with disability to live an independent life. 2 different event wasorganized and attendant at CM house Karachi and at Beach Luxury Hotel Karachi where CM Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah said “I amcommitted to rehabilitating the persons with disabilities and giving them their due share in every walk of life, right from education to employment opportunities”.

“Underage Marriages and Malnutrition mainly Responsiblefor the high rate of Infant Mortality in the Region” Saidby Dr. Azra Fazalullah Pechuho-Health Minister, SindhDr. Azra Fazalullah Pechuho-Health Minister, Sindh has visitedvarious Rural Health Centres (RHC) established by HANDSin Government Health Facilities at Kheensar, GD Kathy JiVeri and GD Jetrar in taluka Chachro and Dahli of districtTharparkar on 26th October, 2019. She said that underagemarriages and malnutrition mainly responsible for the highrate region, parents should be educated on the issue andunderage marriages must be discouraged to control the situation.The minister was speaking to local journalists after inspectingthe working and facilities being offered to patients at hospitalsinthe two Taluka. She made it clear that birth of underweight

babies and their deaths would continue until and unless parentsstopped marrying off their underage daughters. She observedthat parents and their children in Thar mostly lacked suchknowledge which was leading to complications and infantmortality. Dr. Pechuho stressed the need for adopting methodsof birth control and spacing in bearing babies on the part ofrural families. During her visit to various health facilities, theminister warned the doctors and paramedics against slacknessand negligence. She asked them to perform their duties honestlyto justify their salaries and other perks which in this district,she claimed, were almost double than in the rest of the province.

Six Days Training Workshop for TeachersHANDS Education EMO project organized six days training workshop for teachers of HANDSEMO Schools of Sukkur and Khairpur districts from 22nd to 28th December 2019 underEMO School Project. The objectives of this training workshop to imparting an adequateknowledge of the subject- matter, enhance teaching ability of teachers, equipping the prospectiveteachers with necessary pedagogic skills, enabling the teacher to acquire understanding ofchild psychology, developing proper attitudes towards teaching and developing self-confidencein the teachers. The contents of the workshop included Communication, English Language,Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Early Child Education (ECE) Material,Classroom Management and Education Management Information System (EMIS). Total 69participants were present in different batches in which 39 were female and 30 were maleparticipants.

It was a guided tour, Students of gradeX accompany with their parents andHead office and district team participatedas a guide, mentor and supervisor. HeadOffice team is responsible to prepareshort duration sessions and thesesessions conducted during travellingtime. Thirty students of grade X fromall EMO Schools were selected, girl’sstudents accompany with their one

parent (Mother/Father), 15 teaching staffalong with Higher Management and fivemanagement staff (district and HeadOffice) total group of 75 (30 Female +45 Male) persons were participated inthis trip. Students and Teachers selectioncriteria has been set. During this studytour participants visited Shalamar Bagh,Shahi Qila, Badshahi Masjid, Mazar-e-Iqbal, Minar e Pakistan, LUMSUniversity at Lahore and Rawal Dam,Allama Iqbal Open University, NUST,LokVirsa Museum, Faisal Mosque,Pakistan Monument, Shakar Pariyan,Margalla hills and Daman-e-Koh Park.,Pir Sohawa and had a lunch at famousrestaurant Monnal at Islamabad.

Global Hand Washing day2019 celebrated by HANDSunder Accelerated ActionPlan for reduction of stunting& malnutrition project

Global Hand Washing Day celebration(June 2018-December 2020)in Pano Aqil District Sukkurwith the theme “CleanHands for all” in Pano Aqil’shigh school auditorium.

Hundreds of the students,male and females from thecommunity participated andspoke on the topic. Officialsfrom Local Government,

Social Welfare Department,Education, Health and noteable were also participatedin the mega event.

Mega Event Celebrated on World ToiletDay–2019World Toilet Day (WTD) is an annual global eventorganized by HANDS under Accelerated Action Plan(AAP)-Sukkur Project on 19th November 2019 to raiseawareness of the crucial role that sanitation plays in reducingdisease and creating healthier communities. WTD fallsevery year on November 19. The WTD 2019 theme,

"Leaving No One Behind," emphasizes the importance ofexpanding sanitation access to the more than 4.2 billionpeople living without safely managed sanitation options.This global day attended by 700 male, females and studentsfrom Pano Aqil Taluka villages and performed Tabloos,speeches and other activities related to event.

Participatory Rapid Appraisal Accelerated ActionPlan (AAP)-WASH SukkurParticipatory Rapid Appraisal (PRA) is an approach used by Non-Governmental Organizations(NGOs) and other agencies involved in international development. The approach aims toincorporate the knowledge and opinions of rural people in the planning and managementof development projects and programmes. Using a PRA tool an activity regarding totalsanitation-social mapping in different villages of Pano Aqil District Sukkur in whichhundreds male and females participated and designed the maps of their villages keep inview the source of water facility, availability of latrine, hazard mapping where they pointedout hazards which are harmful for communities, social mapping was done on ground andwork out on papers / chart and highlighted the whole situation including targeted village’land marks (Schools, Health Facility – Dispensary, BHU, RHC and Private health clinics,Mosques, Shops, Poultries form Otaq – Place of Sitting for social gathering) they identified their issues about health and hygiene.

National Financial Literacy Program (NFLP)

16 days of Activism

The State Bank of Pakistan has launched NationalFinancial Literacy Program (NFLP) under AsianDevelopment Bank (ADB)-funded Improving Accessto Financial Services Fund (IAFSF). NFLP is aPakistan’s first ever program of its kind. HANDShas been successfully selected as an implementingpartner in both provinces Sindh and Balochistan.The project aims at imparting knowledge andunderstanding of basic financial concepts, developingskills and attitudes towards budgeting, savings,investments, debt management, to the masses withemphasis on low-income and marginalizedcommunities of Pakistan. HANDS has signed MoUwith state bank of Pakistan for the conduction of2020 community sessions till June, 2020 in theprovince of Sindh and Balochistan.

The 16 Days of Activismagainst Gender-BasedViolence is an annualinternational campaign thatkicks off on 25 November,the International Day forthe Elimination of Violenceagainst Women, and runsuntil 10 December, HumanRights Day.

HANDS taking the leadamongst civil society havecelebrated 85 eventsupporting the theme"stands against Rape" in 13districts of Sindh, Punjaband Baluchistan. Other thanthis 02 mega events werecelebrated in Karachi incollaboration with Power

Cement Limited. Theevents were carried out inDistrict Malir and Districtwest respectively… Manyrenowned names decoratedboth the events andhighlighted the importanceof celebrating 16 days ofactivism amongst the youthand other members of

civil society etc. These daysactually aims to makepeople realize about therights of women and raisevoice against gender basedviolence. Hence the themeitself states that "STANDAGAINST RAPE" becauseof many cases of rapeobserved now days.

Training of Project Staff on Community Led Total Sanitation for Open Defecation Free

Community Resource Persons Training onOpen Defecation Free-ODFOpen defecation (also used inthe opposite meaning as opendefecation free-ODF) is thehuman practice of defecatingoutside (in the openenvironment) rather than intoa toilet. People may choosefields, bushes, forests, ditches,streets, canals or other openspace for defecation. They doso because either they do nothave a toilet readily accessibleor due to traditional cultural

practices. The practice iscommon where sanitationinfrastructure and services arenot available. Even if toiletsare available, behavior changeefforts may still be needed topromote the use of toilets. Theterm "open defecation free"(ODF) is used to describecommunities that have shiftedto using a toilet instead ofopen defecation. This canhappen for example after

community-led total sanitationprograms have beenimplemented. Under theHANDS project “SocialMobilization to Achieve ODFVillages for District Sukkur afour days training Forcommunity Resource Personswas conducted on 19 October2019 in different TargetedUnion councils of Taluka PanoAqil District sukkur in which200 male female Community

Resource Persons trained oncommunity led total Sanitationmodel and Accelerated ActionPlan for reduction of stunting& malnutrition project (June2018-December 2020) withthe support of Village WASHCommittees. On the end ofthis training participantsassured their cooperation toachieve open defecation freeareas goal.

Five Days Step Down Training on Package CGrade IV & VIt is to be very clear that there are many techniques to furnish the human behavior as they can understand the needs of 21stcentury, for the development of society Vocal class population understand that there is only one source to secure human mindthat is to give them opportunities of trainings and workshops, as HANDS Pakistan continuously working for basic human rightsand creating spaces through well-organized session and workshops, there are many components for HANDS to implement butEducation is to be considered as back bone of Society. There has been organized 5 Days training workshop on Package C GradeIV & V under HANDS SENSA project at Kamber Shahdadkot from 19th to 23rd November 2019 and 22 participants wereattended the training included 15 females and 07 males. The overall training agenda was focusing on Non Formal Educationsystem and its packages regarding Primary Education, as this project has successfully completed already 2 packages and finallythere was remaining only one that was package C on that training was conducted, in said training workshop collectively 103Teachers and senior teachers were entertained and facilitated by Trainers. Finally the 5 days Training workshop On Packag Csuccessfully ended with Certificates distribution ceremony.

3-Day Training of Project Staff on Client CenteredFamily PlanningThree days trainingworkshop for DAFPAK staffat Head office was held from18th December, 2019 to 20thDecember, 2019. Thistraining workshop wasorganized by HANDSPakistan under DAFPAKproject (DeliveringAccelerating FamilyPlanning in Pakistan). Theproject is based on Familyplanning services at

community level in 4districts Dadu, Sanghar,Ghotki and Umerkot. Theduration of project isDecember 2017 to December2021. This training workshopwas attended by 25participants (08 female and17 males) included DistrictExecutive Managers,Community Mobilizers,District Project Managersand head office

staff. The objectives of thetraining were to updateknowledge of participants onQuality Family Planning,Client Centered Approach inFamily Planning and to sharethe status of ReproductiveHealth and Family Planningin Pakistan. The trainingcontent covered QualityFamily Planning,Management InformationSystem, Health Statistics,

Leadership and FamilyPlanning, Project Progress/Project Planning, RDQA andsustainability Indicators.Birth spacing, its benefitsand detailed discussion aboutFamily Planning methodswere held. Through groupwork methodology FemaleCommunity ResourcePersons enhanced their skillsin motivation, counselingand negotiation.

The purpose of the project is to promote hygiene awarenesswith provision of supplies for improved hygiene behaviorsand increased community acceptance to support polioeradication in UC Gujro Gadap Town Karachi. The workshopof Mohalla WASH committee took place in the decidedvenue. The objective of the training was to aware communityabout Hygiene and its Types, the attitude and behavior abouthealth and hygiene in routine life, personnel, household andenvironmental hygiene actions. The contents of the trainingwas to know WASH Committee members’ roles andresponsibilities and record keeping on WASH Committees

in MIS Register. Furthermore, to know about socialdevelopment and Community WASH development Plan atvillage level and duties of Muhalla WASH Committeesmembers’. During training on hygiene promotion of thecommunity resource persons, they were oriented about thetechnical solutions for the improved sanitation and healthhygiene practices. They were also oriented about theconstruction of friendly environmental toilets and methodsfor treatment of water to get or use of safe drinking water.During this training 20 participants were present in which11 female and 09 male.
