DAA Announcement Sunday Today we heard Bishop Hoeppner’s Diocesan Annual Appeal letter read from the ambo by your pastor or DAA Chairperson. We ask that you prayerfully consider mak-ing a gift to the 2018 Diocesan Annual Appeal. Your gifts support the education of our seminarians and 13 diocesan offices and ministries. These ministries in-clude our lively Youth Ministry, the offices of Marriage, Family & Life, New Evangelization and Justice, Worship, Vocations and many more. Your support is critical to the Bishop being able to offer ministries throughout the dio-cese of Crookston. You may pick up an in-pew envelope here at your parish or make a gift by using the mailing your will receive at home. If you choose to make an online or sustaining gift with a credit card or checking account, you can visit the website at www.crookston.org/daa Thank you for all your support in the 2018 Diocesan Annual Appeal Parish Goals this Year:

Sacred Heart $13,591

Greater Works– by Peter Tate

Question: In John 14:12, Jesus says that we will do great-er works than these because he goes to the Father. But how could we do greater works than Jesus?

Answer: There are two commons ways of understanding Jesus’ words. One way to see “greater” is as a reference to the fact that the apostles will go throughout the world, and thus, the sheer number of miracles will be greater. But most find this explanation unsatisfying since “greater” implies quality more than quantity.

Another explanation is that Jesus, speaking here to the apostles, is referring to the power of the sacraments which far surpass the value of merely physical miracles. To go from being a leper to being clean, or from being paralyzed to being able to walk, or even from physical death to being alive again, are all examples of natural change or effect. But to be born unto a new life by baptism is to become a whole new creation and be taken out of the kingdom of darkness and into the kingdom of light; it is to become a member of the Body of Christ and to rise to a whole new life. This is a supernatural effect.

It is the same with the other sacraments, where bread and wine become the body, blood of Christ; where sins are actually (not just ritually) forgiven; where two become one in holy matrimony and so forth. The sacraments of Jesus are “greater works” than the healing miracles.

SACRED HEART BUILDING RENOVATION TEAM The Building Renovation team met with the architect and engineers. After viewing the 3D models of our renovated plans we asked the architect to draw up a model with a hip roof vs a flat roof design. We were sent drawings of a hip roof with warnings from two structural engineers who were very skeptical that our existing structure would allow a hip roof. Both recommended the flat roof option. Steve Dostal will bring our up-to-date plans to the Diocese to ask for approval on Feb 9th.

America’s birth rate lowest in quarter century– The Ameri-can birthrate is now estimated to be 1.86 children per woman. This is a significant drop from the average 2.1 children of the last few decades, and is the lowest birthrate since 1987, accord-ing to Demographic Intelligence. It is It is estimated that the birthrate of 2.1 is necessary to maintain a country’s population and work force. Analysts point to the poor economy as the cause for rapidly declining birthrates, as parents delay or avoid having children in order to further their education or career. Sam Sturgeon of Demographic Intelligence said, “There’s a sense of hesitance, especially for those of prime child-bearing age. The key word would be uncertainty.” -American Family Association Journal

Knights of Columbus – Pennies for Seminarians - Roseau

There is a wall box in the church entrance at Sacred Heart marked “Pennies for Seminarians”. The KC Councils in Minnesota collect do-nations and loose change at their meetings for the support of semi-narians. You are invited to join in this effort – possibly putting in some loose change or other dona-tion into the box. If you collect actual pennies or loose change at home you may turn in the contain-er or bag of coins or check to a KC member or the parish office.
