Virtue of the Month: Dignity During the month of February, the St. Francis community is focusing on dignity. Our virtue verse is Galatians 3:28: “There is neither Jew nor Greek, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” Try to memorize it as a family. You can learn more about dignity by watching this short video.

Table Talk: Play “pass the story.” One family member starts a story and each family member adds a new part. See how many examples of dignity you can add to the story. For an extra challenge, use the following words: "playground," "respect," and "spring."

Primary School From the Assistant Division Head Learning in Primary School continues, even on the weekends. Earlier this month, a team of six Primary School teachers attended the popular Winter Early Literacy Summit at Rice University, while two of our teachers actually presented at the event.

Primary School teachers Jane Oteiza, Maggy Britton, Madison Brecevich, Elizabeth Greenwood, Carol Kemper, and Margaret Dexter attended multiple breakout sessions that focused on best practices in providing research-based, developmentally appropriate literacy experiences for young children through play.

Meanwhile, Primary II Lead Teacher Diane Wiener co-presented a session titled "What's in a Name?" The session focused on the benefits of name activities that enforce letter and sound recognition while building writing skills in young children.

Pre-Primary Lead Teacher Susan Meriwether presented two sessions. The first session was titled "Story for Toddlers, Twos, and Threes," sharing how she instills value in children's personal stories by scribing their words. The second session Susan presented was titled, “STEAM for Toddlers, Twos, and Threes.” In this session, she focused on how she intentionally creates a foundation of science, technology, engineering, arts, and math through hands-on activities in her Pre-Primary classroom.

We are fortunate to have access to such quality professional development for our faculty, and we are proud of our teachers’ involvement as presenters and educational leaders in our community.

Warmly,

Clifton Walker, MEd Assistant Head of Primary School

Lower School From the Curriculum and Instruction Specialist We’ve all been swept away by tales of magic, heroes, villains, and castles in the air—and this coming Wednesday, February 26, will be a time for our students to celebrate fairy tales at our second annual National Tell a Fairy Tale Day celebration.

This event began as a collaboration between myself and the library team. Two summers ago, we were each given the chance to learn more about the origins of western fairy tales through the generosity of the Woolrich Fund. While I explored the history and stories of Germany’s Brothers Grimm, Director of Library Services Melanie Wallace and Library Services Coordinator Lydia Urbanek researched the stories of France’s Charles Perrault.

You may be wondering: What exactly are we hoping that our students take away from this day? What is this celebration all about? Well, in my mind, these traditional stories weave magical tales that transport the reader to far away places, yet also teach us important lessons like don’t talk to strangers; beware too much of a good thing; always tell the truth; etc. I have always found that teaching with traditional tales gives students a common understanding—a shared experience—onto which they can attach new knowledge. They may learn more about storytelling, the elements of a story, the rise and fall of the plot, the complexities of a character, or good vs. evil. Or, they may gain insight into a particular culture or begin to understand how people long ago explained natural phenomenon.

Our day will be rich with classroom activities that incorporate reading; writing; drama; STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math); and music around each grade level’s selected tale. Then, in the afternoon, students will gather in the library to listen to local storyteller Sheila Starks Phillips and participate in a fairy-tale scavenger hunt.

Below are the fairy tales each grade level has chosen to study in-depth:

• Kindergarten—“The Pied Piper of Hamelin” • First Grade—“The Three Billy Goats Gruff” • Second Grade—“Little Red Riding Hood” • Third Grade—“Jack and the Beanstalk” • Fourth Grade—“Rumplestiltskin”

Page 7: News for the Week of February 23 - St. Francis Episcopal School · 2020. 2. 26. · News for the Week of February 23 All School Save the Date—Festival 2020: A Birthday Celebration

Be sure to ask your child about the day’s activities and to share in the fun by reading more fairy tales at home together.

Happy Reading!

Ali Salinas, EdS Curriculum and Instruction Specialist

Middle School From the Division Head There has been a great deal of activity in the Middle School since our return from winter break. Here’s a short list: a record-setting Canstruction; preparation for a musical; ending the winter sports season and starting spring athletics; 2020–21 re-enrollment; a parent book study; preparation for an accreditation visit; and information sessions related to next year. I am probably missing several items, but the upshot is that students, parents, and faculty have been working hard in 2020!

The second trimester is drawing to a close, and we have one more trimester of exciting work in front of us. I encourage you to take this opportunity to talk with your children about their year so far and their hopes, goals, and expectations for our final third of the year. You can use the conversation to remind your student about significant successes and milestones they have achieved in 2019–20. It would also be a great time to validate

Page 11: News for the Week of February 23 - St. Francis Episcopal School · 2020. 2. 26. · News for the Week of February 23 All School Save the Date—Festival 2020: A Birthday Celebration

the behaviors, attitudes, and strategies that have helped your child succeed this year, while also continuing to help them identify areas where they can keep growing.

I appreciate your continued partnership and investment in St. Francis.

Chris Bertha, MA Head of Middle School

Upper School A Note About the Religion in the City Field Trip On Thursday, February 13, Upper School students participated in Religion in the City, an annual field trip that ties classroom learning to the diversity of Houston. Sites visited included a synagogue, an Orthodox church, and a Mediterranean restaurant.

Page 15: News for the Week of February 23 - St. Francis Episcopal School · 2020. 2. 26. · News for the Week of February 23 All School Save the Date—Festival 2020: A Birthday Celebration

Congregation Beth Israel, a Reform Judaism synagogue, opened its chapel, sanctuary, and art museum to the students. Mr. David Scott, the executive director and director of lifelong learning at Beth Israel, fielded questions about the worship space and Judaism in general. In the sanctuary, Mr. Scott opened the ark, took out the Torah scrolls, and read the Ten Commandments. Students were also able to view the Spotlight on Joseph art installation.

Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral welcomed students to learn about iconography and the Orthodox way of worship. Father Tagaropulos provided a brief overview and then fielded questions about the worship space. Students were invited to explore the area below the bema, the raised area of the inner sanctuary.

Dimassi’s Mediterranean Buffet allowed students to experience the smells and tastes that both the Jews and early Christians enjoyed in biblical times. Students tried foods like hummus, tabbouleh, gyro meat, falafel, baklava, and more. And, they liked them!

After returning to campus, we had a debrief discussion with the students. They were able to reflect on each site, make connections to their religion courses, and draw comparisons with their own worship experience. Rev. Greg Han, the director of interfaith relations and education at Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston—who collaborated with us to create this experience—then engaged the students on the topic of religious literacy. He shared the diverse nature of our nation and city, stressed the importance of religious curiosity and literacy, and encouraged students to embrace the religious education at St. Francis.

For a pictorial journey, visit this folder of beautiful images by freshman John B. The image name explains each image.

Sincerely,

Rev. Wendy Heinemann Chaplain
