Crofton Downs.
Big thanks to
Katrina, Kathryn,
Kate, Kiran, Janine,
Mel and our little
helpers.
Get set for a brighter future
In March we applied for our first Altrusa International
Foundation Grant. The project that we are seeking to fund is
titled “Get set for a brighter future”. Our aim is to provide sets
of literacy resources that empower women and children to
develop new skills, extend their knowledge, and understand
the opportunities that are created through education. We will
purchase sets of instructional readers for Linden Primary
School, sets of novels for the Arohata Prison Library Book Club,
and sets of non-fiction books that represent women in
technology for local primary and intermediate school libraries,
providing a total of almost 250 brand-new books to our local
community. We will learn whether our grant application is
successful in mid-May.

March Meeting
Anne Schumacher, CEO of Dementia Wellington, spoke at our March meeting
during Brain Awareness Week. Anne gave us some tips for reducing the risk of
dementia. Basically the saying goes, "Good for your heart, Good for your brain"
We look forward to volunteering at the Dementia Wellington Street Appeal at the
end of the month.
February Meeting
Our February meeting landed on Valentines Day, which seemed like a good
excuse to create more Love Letters.
These A4-sized decorated and laminated letters are sent to children in hospital,
then used to spell out their names on their wall. Love Letters are a simple yet
effective idea to brighten up the rooms of sick children.
New Member
We had a few visitors at our February meeting
and we’re delighted that Karen has joined
Altrusa! Karen discovered us over the New Year
break and got in touch via our Facebook page.
She is the 17th member of our club.
Club Board
In March we formally re-
elected our Club Board to
serve until May 2020.
Thank you Trudi, Janine,
Katrina, and Kiran.
Django Girls Wellington
Our amazing Merridy was the lead organiser of Django Girls Wellington, a free one-day programming
workshop for women that was held in late March.
Django Girls is an international non-profit organisation that empowers and helps women to organise
these free workshops by providing tools, resources and support. They are a volunteer run
organisation with hundreds of people contributing to bring more amazing women into the world of
technology. During each of their events, 30-60 women build their first web application using HTML,
CSS, Python and Django.
Altrusa Ohariu were proud to
support the Wellington workshop
by providing baking for morning tea,
thanks to Maree, Barbara, and
Janine. Kiran was also able to help
as a coach through the day, you
might be able to spot her in a
photo!
