ZEAL How do those who know the people at 1410 Golf
Club Lane describe us? Are we a congregation that
is seen as enthusiastic about using our talents and
resources to serve not only God but those on our
mission field? Zeal brings to mind a fervor and con-
suming desire to be like Jesus. Further it is embrac-
ing the unconditional love Christ has for us and lov-
ing with that same kind of passion. We are blessed
by grace and the Father’s love and from loving grati-
tude we should desire to live a life worthy of such
an awesome God. Life changing grace is often tak-
en for granted and should we wonder what could
happen in our community of faith if we allowed that
excitement to permeate each moment of the day?
It would be hard to imagine how many lives would
be touched and changed if God’s children were in-
struments tuned and played by the Master, not to
mention how greatly our lives would change. The
gift of each day will bring opportunities and expec-
tations, not from a sense of obligation, to make a
difference in the lives of those we have the honor to
contact. Joy consumes us causing our enthusiasm
to be unquenchable especially when it is directed
and fueled with the presence and power of the Holy
Spirit. We have the promise of this happening as we
grow in our relationship with the Lord. It is more
than just an emotions experience, more than a wor-
ship event, more than Bible study and prayer it is a
drive from within to serve.
Serving God is always about others and we are
being called and wooed to a higher relationship
with Him. Many may recall members of this congre-
gation who reached their “golden years” yet still felt
and worked tirelessly to move to a deeper relation-
ship in their spiritual lives; sometimes as we grow
we embrace new visions. For many our taste in food
has changed but we still seek nourishment. Service
to His kingdom is the same way and He does not
desire part timers, short timers or weekend warri-
ors. Christianity should be producing people who
are not only stirred but changed. The Sunday expe-
rience identifies a need that should be met and yet
no commitment of time or ability is made available.
It is easy to see a ministry but even easier to stand
back and wait and see if there will be others to
make it happen without being personally involved.
Tommy Tenney in “The God Chasers” says, “There
is something in us that make us afraid of the com-
mitment that comes with real intimacy with God.
For one thing, intimacy with God requires purity.
The days of fun and games in church are over.
What do I mean by fun and games? If your defini-
tion of love is commitment and lots of thrills and
chills, then all you want to do is date God.” Tenney
is right; many want goose bumps and warm and
fuzziness without commitment. We like the thought
of being anointed, blessed and gifted and yet we
wait and see instead of going and doing. God ex-
pects a long term, no turning back commitment and
even when the going gets tough or difficult and
hard to understand; we intensify our effort and de-
pend completely on him to make it so. God calls us
to hear the call and respond knowing it will make a
difference, personally and in others as well. It is
with bold confidence that we go all in knowing that
he is with us every step of the way. Our morning
prayers should include a pledge to renew our vows
in His service.
