Our very special Covid-secure Christmas Carol Service, featuring our remotely recorded Community Choir, along with readings and meditations from girls and staff, is available to watch at queenswood.org/christmas-2020 from 2.30pm on Friday 11 December. Countdown to Christmas: Days 1 to 9 Every day this week, girls and staff have been enjoying sketches and routines put together by the Drama and Dance departments. Highlights from this week include some sensational aerial silks performances, a whistlestop production of A Christmas Carol, and a special staff homage to Shakin’ Stevens’ perennial festive classic, ‘Merry Christmas Everyone’. New A-Levels for 2021 at Queenswood: Media Studies and Photography We keep the curriculum under regular review at Queenswood to ensure that it continues to meet the needs of the Sixth Formers, across their very broad range of interests and ambitions. Subject to demand, we will be offering A-Level Media Studies, operating within the Drama Faculty, and will introduce Photography as a new specification option within A-Level Art, beginning in September 2021. Sixth Form Academic Scholarships 50% Fee Reduction Opportunity from September 2021 We are delighted to announce that, from September 2021, Queenswood is offering 50% reduction in day fees to successful candidates for the Sixth Form Academic Scholarship. This offer is open to all current Year 11 Queenswood girls, as well as to external candidates resident in the UK. Click the hyperlink for further information. Medical Society: Fascinating Seminar with Imperial College Covid Expert The Sixth Form Medical Society was very lucky to receive a talk from Dr Benjamin Pearce from the Department of Infectious Diseases at Imperial College London last week. His talk on “Vaccines and COVID-19: The Basics” offered students a deeper understanding of the current pandemic. Bebras Computational Thinking Challenge: Gold Awards For Q Students We’d like to congratulate all the girls who were commended in the recent Bebras Computational Thinking Challenge, in association with Oxford University. Several received gold certificates, placing them in the top 10% in the country, and qualifying them to enter an additional challenge in the spring. After gratefully receiving a bounty of Christmas gifts from our Q families and staff, Reverend Vindra, Miss Yaffe and her Duke of Edinburgh volunteers assembled the hampers before they were delivered to our friends in the community on Friday. Christmas hampers are delivered to the community The Beautiful Birds of Queenswood – Part Two Miss Langdon’s guide to the birds of Queenswood was one of the most popular items in last week’s newsletter. We’re very pleased to present the second part of this delightful feature. OQ Business Directory: Support Small Businesses This Christmas The OQ Business Directory gives details of over 50 small businesses run by former Queenswood pupils. Many offer quirky goods and services that could make the perfect gift this Christmas. From pet portraits to pot plants, from high-class hats to fancy footwear, there is so much to choose from. With the Christmas holidays upon us, we have swapped our weekly feature ‘This Week I Am Reading...’ for a compilation of recommended reads for each year group. Mrs Truran, our Librarian, will capture your curiosity and imagination with her thoughtfully selected book choices and bring some extra literary sparkle to the festivities.
