  • “He Leads Us”

The moment has arrived when we must move ahead; may God be with us always wherever we are led. He’ll hold our hands and guide us and teach us how to cope with life’s little problems and lift our heads in hope. The Lord stands beside us and helps us to be strong; there’s nothing we can’t conquer as long as He’s along. So as we face tomorrow and in God do abide, there’s promise for the future for He is by our side.

    CHILDREN’S CHURCH

Children’s Church began in September 2007. On the first and third Sunday, September through May, children are able to attend Children’s Church during the last 30 - 40 minutes of morning worship. It has been a very successful program and many children have enjoyed this ministry. The aver-age attendance for Children’s Church this past year was about 20. During the months of June, July and August, we will not have Children’s Church so our leaders and helpers may take a well-deserved break and be refreshed come September. Our thanks to those who have committed themselves to this ministry, to our children and especially to Jean Kohne for coordinating the program this year.

A special “thanks” to Angie Vann for enhancing our worship ser-

vices with slide shows of parents and children for both Mother’s

Day and Father’s Day, as well as the slide show presented for Graduate Sunday. Seeing the growth of these children and families was a treat for all!

    Church WiFi Password Change

The WiFi Password for Wake-mans Grove COB has recently

changed! Please see Angie Vann to obtain the new one being used. We apologize for any inconven-

    ience this may cause.

    COOKBOOKS

Have you been looking for a recipe with chicken or for a good homemade bread reci-pe to go along with dinner and then finish up with a yummy dessert or just something different to

make? Or a special salad for that reunion or pic-nic!

Then, look no more! We still have cook-books for sale. If you need a graduation gift, birthday gift for your father or father-in-law or friend or co-worker, give them a cookbook. They make an excellent gift for a couple just starting out and only $8.00.

  • FROM PASTOR MARK Is Christ at Home in your Heart? Part V

We are now in the second-to-last installment of the wonderful illustration written by the late Robert

Boyd Munger of Fuller Theological Seminary, “My Heart Christ’s Home.” Munger presents disci-

pleship as a visit by Jesus to every “room” in the home of our hearts. I have been presenting these

in successive newsletter articles and sermons recently. I pray that these articles and messages will

help you answer the question, “Is Christ at home in my heart?” As a follow-up to last month’s arti-

cle about the “workshop” of the mind, Jesus now enters our rec (recreation) room. Enjoy and be

    challenged!

    The Rec Room

One day Jesus asked me if I had a rec room where I went for fun and fellowship. I was hoping He

would not ask about that. There were certain associations and activities that I wanted to keep for

myself. That evening when I was on my way out with some of my buddies, He stopped me with a

glance and asked, “Are you going out?” I replied, “Yes.” “Good,” He said, “I would like to go with

you.” “Oh,” I answered rather awkwardly. “I don’t think, Lord Jesus, that You would really enjoy

where we are going. Let’s go out together tomorrow night. Tomorrow night we will go to Bible

class at church, but tonight I have another appointment.” “I’m sorry,” He said. “I thought that

when I came to your home, we were going to do everything together, be close companions. I just

want you to know that I am willing to go with you.” “Well,” I mumbled, slipping out the door, “we

will go someplace together tomorrow night.” That evening, I spent some miserable hours. I felt

rotten. What kind of friend was I to Jesus, deliberately leaving Him out of my life, doing things and

going places that I thought He would not enjoy? When I returned that evening, there was a light on

in His room, and I went up to talk it over with Him. I said, “Lord, I have learned my lesson. I know

now that I can’t have a good time without You. From now on, we will do everything together.”

This chapter reminds me (Pastor Mark) of a true story I heard a few years ago. A young rock star

was spending time playing clubs in Europe. He was making good money and gaining notoriety,

but he began to feel guilty about associating himself with the lifestyle of many of the people who

attended those clubs. He longed for America where he could join a Christian band and escape the

fleshy influences around him. But one night, as he made the decision to leave the clubs for good, he

heard Jesus say clearly in His spirit, “You can go if you want to, but I’m staying.” John records Je-

sus’ amazing prayer for His disciples in chapter 17. In a portion of it, Jesus prays:

John 17:13 “I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may

have the full measure of my joy within them. 14 I have given them your word and the world has hated them,

for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. 15 My prayer is not that you take them out of

the world but that you protect them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. 17

Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the

world. 19 For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.

Being full-on for God does not mean withdrawing from the world—Paul said we’d have to leave this world if we did that. Instead, Jesus says we are the light of the world—called to carry that light into the homes, schools, workplaces, and yes, even the clubs of this world. Continued on Page 8

Now, we are to do this according to the grace

given us (Romans 12:6). Not everyone can min-

ister in a club, because of the risk of being over-

come by temptation. You and Jesus must talk

these things over before venturing into the dark

areas of life. But some can, by the covering of

grace God has given them. For example, many

times the best person to reach a struggling ad-

dict is a recovering addict. And the main quali-

fication we all share for reaching other sinners

(of any kind) is that we are recovering sinners

ourselves! We must beware of temptation as

we minister to others, but it is a risk Jesus says

is worth taking, so that some indeed may be

    saved!

Galatians 6:1 Brothers and sisters, if someone is

caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should

restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or

you also may be tempted. 2 Carry each other’s bur-

dens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of

Christ. So what of the rec room scenario? The

key, for me, is the last line: “From now on, we

will do everything together.” If there are still

things you are doing without Him, it’s time to

grow out of them and into the maturity that al-

lows us to carry His light into even the darkest

    of places!

I am especially interested in your reactions and com-

ments to this article and this series. Please let me

know any feedback you may have! We can get to-

gether to share a meal or get coffee!

    Because of Him,

    Pastor Mark

Friends, are you on Facebook? A quick word

about my “friends” policy: If you request to

friend me, I will gladly accept! I choose to ac-

cept friendship requests rather than “friend”

others in the church to help avoid someone

feeling left out. I hope this is helpful!

    coming!

In the meantime, the CBYF will be get-

ting together on Monday evenings at Adam

    Wednesday Piecemakers

Eleven of our members recently took a day trip to quilt shops in Lexington and Staunton. We returned home after a nice lunch in Staunton. A FUN DAY! The quilters have already begun work on a new quilt. The quilt do-nated for the Brethren Disaster Auction was purchased by Janelle Seekford for $1450. (a former quilter from The Grove)

As always, we are still busy with ongoing projects. The sewers are still stitching away on throws. Several quilts have been taken to Shen-andoah Memorial Hospital (Angel Cart) , Shenandoah County Pregnancy Center and A Small Hand. We have also started a new project; (saving small scrap pieces of ma-terial) to make Doggie Pillows for the Shenandoah County Animal Shel-ter. Some have already been taken to the shelter and were well re-ceived!

*We have scheduled our summer picnic for Wednesday, June 27th - eat at 12 noon. Please bring a covered dish. Regular quilt day/lunch will follow.

    Hard Work!

    Wonderful Results!

Thank you! Thank you to everyone who helped make the 26th Annual Shenandoah District Disaster Ministries Auction such a success on May 18 and 19. Volunteers had worked at the Rockingham County Fairgrounds most of the week in preparation for the opening of the auction schedule on Friday afternoon and volunteers worked throughout the rest of Friday and all day Saturday to assure that every segment of the auction progressed smoothly. Thank you volunteers!

While some figures, such as the number of meals served are still being computed, other totals, such as the amount of money raised will not be confirmed until the books are closed in late July or early August. Some numbers are available—1,000 school kits for Church World Service were assembled in less than three hours on Friday afternoon and 1,097 diners were served on Friday night at the ham & oyster dinner!

Auction coordinators remarked that more items were donated for the auctions this year and that the quality of items was exceptionally high!

To everyone who volunteered, enjoyed the good food, bid on auction items, purchased plants and baked goods, assembled school kits and just came for the simple pleasure of being with hundreds of friends and new acquaintances, THANK YOU! We hope to see you all again next year!!
