News from the Acting Principal By Jan Smith
WELCOME BACK
Welcome to Term Four. It has been wonderful to see everyone back after a very
relaxing break. Many families enjoyed the gorgeous spring sunshine and getting out
and about at the beach and local parks. It was lovely to visit classes this week and see
all the students well and truly back into the swing of school. Yesterday our Year 3/4s
headed off to Anglesea camp and from reports today they are all having a fabulous
time.
We have another fabulous term ahead. Highlights will include Light it Red Day next
week, Korean Day, Book Fair, Walk to School breakfast, whole school lifesaving
program, 5/6 swimming, Step up Transition Days, Year 6 Graduation and our fabulous
Christmas Concert. Exciting times ahead!
NAPLAN
Our NAPLAN results were received at the end of last term and once again our Grade 3
and Grade 5 students performed exceptionally well. Our results are a testament to our
agreed strategies and innovative learning approaches across the school, great teachers
and hardworking students. We should be very proud of our students who
demonstrated resilience and persistence in doing their best throughout the three days
of national testing.
During August, Chelsea Primary students completed the school readiness test in
preparation for the 2019 online NAPLAN testing. All students in Year 3 and 5 next year
will complete NAPLAN testing online except for Year 3 writing.
These results have been presented at both School Council and with staff. The overall
results indicate some very positive progress across the school. While NAPLAN only
measures student performance on one day of the year, it does provide us with
important data on future curriculum directions. Staff are have begun planning a range
of high impact programs to enhance our students’ learning as we develop our new
Strategic plan.

WORKING BEE - WHAT A DIFFERENCE AND WHAT A COMMUNITY!
Special thanks to our families who helped beautify our school last Sunday. Window washing, raking playgrounds and reinstalling mats, painting, weeding, trimming, replacing glass louvres and the list goes on. Many thanks to the Hedley, Williams, Sullivan, Field, Wragg, Bray-Brand, Pool, Rutland, Erlandson, Hickey and Blake families and Paul from the Freeway Church. Your time is really appreciated! (Apologies if I have forgotten anyone! Please let me know).
MORDIALLOC COLLEGE ART SHOW
Next Tuesday evenings, Mordialloc Secondary College will hold their Annual Art Show. Each year, local schools are also invited to display their students’ work. This year Miss Ebbott has collected some stunning work by our students to showcase.
We hope that families who visit the Art Show enjoy the array of work on show!
THIS TERM’S VALUE
As parents, teachers and children, building resilience is quite often one of the most difficult of our values to work through.
Last year, our Wellbeing Team held an evening presentation with well-known psychologist Andrew Fuller. Andrew’s books and articles are always entertaining, honest and logical. Here is one of a fabulous article about resilience and families.
10 Hints for Creating Resilient Families.
‘Resilience is the happy knack of being able to bungy jump through life. When the inevitable
pitfalls and setbacks of life occur, it is as if you have an elasticised rope around your middle
that helps you to bounce back from hard times’.

Chelsea Primary School supports … Over the last two years, we have been on a professional learning journey on how to best support our students with dyslexia or specific learning difficulties in reading and spelling. We have developed and implemented an explicit, sys-tematic phonics program from Prep to Year Two and are seeing fantastic progress for ALL of our students. We have a Prep to Year Six spelling program and intervention support program for literacy. We have purchased resources such as decodable books and APPS to further support our students.
Next week, we are hosting a 5 day Multi-Sensory Learning course at our school. Wendy Stansfield and I have been awarded scholarships to participate in this course. Becoming MSL trained will mean we can provide high impact, evi-denced based teaching and learning for ALL of our students. Our trainer has kindly agreed to run a FREE parent work-shop on Wednesday 17th October from 6.30-7.30. The workshop will look at ways you can help your children at home with reading and spelling. Everyone is welcome!
In support of the Light it Red and Get On Board initiatives, we will have a RED day on Wednesday. Students are asked to wear a red shirt or socks or hair accessories to LIGHT CHELSEA RED. We will be running a RED PAPER PLANE STEM challenge throughout the day. At 12.30 one child from each class will showcase their plane on the turf, followed by a whole school picnic. We have red ribbon, pens and lollypops to share.
Please send a gold coin donation which we will use to purchase more books!
Thank you for your support!

NEW PRINCIPAL UPDATE Last term I sent out communication regarding the process of appointing a new principal to Chelsea Primary School and wanted to keep you informed of current plans.
The recruitment process will begin in late October and will be completed in early December.
I understand that this seems like a long time but given it’s such an important appointment it requires a rigorous, merit-based process.
The selection process will be conducted by a panel of five people made up of; the school council president, school council parent representative, nominee of the Secretary of the Department of Education, a principal of a similar sized school and an CPS staff member, to ensure wide range of views. A final recommendation will then be made to the school council for endorsement.
Jan Smith will remain as Acting Principal until the commencement of a new principal.
