YouTHeatre Alumni - Jenna Renae Ryckman

Jenna Renae (DeVries) Ryckman auditioned for her first YouTHeatre production when she was fifteenyears old. Since her parents, Matthew and Susan DeVries were so involved with theGatesingers/YouTHeater, Jenna was excited to follow in their footsteps. She quickly became a part of theYouTHeatre family during the production of Once Upon a Mattress, directed by the one and only BobGorski. Part of the ensemble, Jenna’s first year in YouTHeatre allowed her to learn from some of the besthigh school performers in the area. The next year, she auditioned again and was given the role of “Snail”in the charming children’s show, The Adventures of Frog and Toad. Jenna’s final/senior year, she landedthe lead role in She Loves Me, starring with incredibly talented Mathew Derrenbacher. Below are someof Jenna’s thoughts on her years with the Gatesinger Company.

“YouTHeatre was the best part of my high school years. Being a part of the shows at Gates Hall gaveme such a passion for entertaining, music, and community. Bob Gorski was such an influential part of mytime at GatesHall. He taught me what it truly meant to perform with excellence and how to give mywhole heart to the audience every time I stepped on that stage. Not only that, but Bob showed me whatit looked like to have someone believe in you enough to not let you settle for mediocre. He alwayspushed me to be the best I could possibly be, and that has stuck with me until this day.

“…the hours I spent onLake Road in Pultneyvillewere some of the mostdefining moments in mymusical career.

“I wouldn’t change thatfor the world.”

Our very own American Idol®

star gives advice to the

youth.

“Beyond performing, YouTHeatre taught me the importance of learningto work well with everyone. I built so many valuable relationships while Iwas there… Even though we may not have seen each other outside ofpractices, when we were together backstage, we were a family. Thosememories and feelings stay with you, no matter where you go.”

To all of the youth who are considering becoming part of theYouTHeatre/Gates Hall legacy or are currently, our own American Idol®star, Jenna Renae, gives this advice:

“Do not miss this opportunity. These are the days that will begin toform you into a true artist. The journey to the Top 24 of American Idol wasa long one and I know I still have a long journey ahead of me… But thehours I spent on Lake Road in Pultneyville were some of the most definingmoments in my musical career. I wouldn’t change that for the world.

“Thank you to everyone who believed in me and gave me a chance to bepart of the YouTHeatre legacy.”
