NEWS FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Thanksgiving is a time for family, delicious food, and for us, also reflecting on the successes of the past three months of school. We have so much to be thankful for and proud of at Newberry Middle School. Some of which include but are not limited to the following: We have had an outstanding first quarter due to the combined efforts of our students, parents, faculty and staff. Our students have been busy with a variety of events including: fundraising activities; participating in sports and extracurricular activities; and for our 6th grade class and new students, simply finding their way around NMS and adjusting to a new school. Special thanks to our PTO and parent volunteers for all their help with the Otis Spunkmeyer Fundraiser, Picture Day, and Fun Friday. I also want to thank our teachers and Guidance Department for hosting a wonder-ful Report Card Pick Up which provided parents with an op-portunity to meet or conference with teachers. We challenge all of our parents to visit NMS, and get to know our faculty and staff. We will have our “Thank You” Parent Luncheon on November 22nd, and encourage you to come eat lunch with your child!

are allowed to be dropped off in the front.
The NMS afterschool FREE tutoring program is off to a great start! This is a reminder that tutoring services are available in ELA and social studies on Mondays and math and science help is available Tuesday afternoons. Stu-dents need to come prepared with homework, classwork, materials to study, or a project to work on. Forms are avail-able in the front office to sign your child up.
CATCH-UP CAFÉ Our morning and lunch Catch-Up Cafe has begun. Each grade level has a designated room for early morning Catch-up Cafe. This is assigned by teachers for students who have missing or incomplete work. Lunch Catch-Up Cafe is open on Tuesdays and Thurs-days. Students must fill out a form to be allowed to stay for tutoring at lunch. Students are given a pass to get to the front of the lunch line before reporting with their lunch and work to Catch-up Cafe.

Please get started on your service hours. You are expected to com-plete 10 by the end of the semester. Our club will soon be collecting our school's recyclables as well as helping beautify our campus by picking up trash. This should provide you with a total of 3 hours of service earned right here at school. NMS Beta Club members are required to put in 10 service hours each semester. These are hours spent in the community helping with a community project. It cannot be doing chores for family or any work they get paid for. If you or someone you know in Newberry County has an event or activity and you are in need of some student volunteers, please contact Mr. Corsini. He will see if he can get some of our Beta Club members in-volved.

Nursing Notations
Fighting the Flu Get vaccinated! It is the best way to fight
the Flu. You can do this at your health care provider’s office, county health de-partment, or Flu clinic.
Wash your hands frequently with soap and
water. You should wash them for about 20 seconds (as long as it takes to sing the “Happy Birthday” song twice). This helps to remove germs and viruses.
Avoid touching eyes, nose, and mouth.
Germs spread this way. Avoid contact with persons known to be ill /sick.
Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue
when coughing or sneezing and then throw the tissue away. Cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve if no tissue is available. Wash hands afterwards.
Eat healthy foods, exercise, and get plenty
of rest. Stay home / keep your child home if fever
of 100.0 or more before medication is given to reduce fever. In most cases, your child may return to school after he or she has been fever free for at least 24 hours without taking fever reducing medications.
Make sure the school has a way to reach
you during the school day. Students who become ill / sick at school must be sent home.
If you have any questions please feel free to
contact the school nurse at 803-321-2640.
Stay Healthy,
Nurse Tracy
