June 2018

The highlight of May was the Members Appreciation luncheon hosted by Nedra Rummell at the Poway Brigantine. 86 members attended, but not many new members joined us. The purpose of this event is to acquaint new members with the club and introduce them to owners of similar Jags. Next year we will return to titling the event “The New Members Luncheon” in hopes of attracting more of our newest members. SDJC members garnered quite a few trophies at the JOCLA Concurs on 20 May in Fullerton. See the write up and photos by Dave Allen in this edition. Pete Reith conducted Concours 101 and 301 Judges training in Balboa Park, convenient for the South County folks, and has scheduled another session in North County for June 16 at Classic Showcase in Oceanside. Maintaining a staff of qualified judges is essential for the success of our Concours. If you would like to become a judge, contact Pete. No experience is required for training. After training, you will be a judge trainee assigned to a judging team at this year’s Concours. On 26 June this year, the club will again be represented at the Del Mar Fair. Free admission to the Fair for you and your guests comes with your display entry. This event is limited, so contact Katherine Partain to reserve your spot. You may receive the next newsletter very close to the deadline to register for the July 14th Concours, so I need to mention it here, register early. The event usually sells out. It is said that if you line up all the cars in the world end to end, Nedra would try to pass. George

SDJC MEMBER CELEBRATION LUNCHEON SUNDAY, MAY 6, 2018

Recap by Nedra Rummell Photos by Roger McDonald, Dave & Matt Allen, and Chuck Leuthen

The 13th Annual Member Celebration Luncheon was held May 6, 2018 at the Brigantine Restaurant in Poway. Unlike last year’s rainy day, we enjoyed beautiful blue skies with the sun shining down on a vast array of beautiful cats on display in the parking lot. Having hosted this event for 13 years, I was overjoyed to have a record number of 85 reservations. We try to make this a true celebration of our SDJC members, because of course without your support and involvement, we would be yet just another mundane car club. This is an opportunity to highlight our new members, to show them what the club is all about, how much fun we have, and learn about the Jaguar marque at the same time. As in the past, members were assigned seats by Jaguar model, with tables for F-Types, S-Types, XJ’s, E-Types, XJ-S’s, MK’s, XK140’s, and XK’s. As I looked around the room, I only wished I could listen in to what appeared to be interesting conversations at the tables, lots of talk and smiling faces. For the second year, to celebrate and show appreciation to our members, there was a $100 door prize drawing. It was extra special that new members Roger and Sharon Blincow’s ticket was picked and they walked away with a crisp Benjamin C-note! A record high number of raffle tickets were sold, thanks to the extraordinary efforts by the Raffle Sales Queens, Kathleen Steele, Deborah Harding, Tolly Williamson, and Marie Allen. After Diah Avery’s winning ticket was pulled, her choice was the prized antique parking meter so kindly donated by Byron Newby from his father’ collection in Texas. Another shout-out to Logo Sales Czar, Marie Allen, for donating the large SDJC logo tote bag, won by new member Brenda Giguere, and book written by SDJC member, Lynn Watt, about his adventures as an Alaskan Bush Pilot. In addition to the record raffle sales, the Allen Family Logo Czar Team (Dave, Marie and Matt) came equipped with a wide variety of new logo items, which resulted in record sales for the day. The laugh of the day came when Margie Simpson suggested (complained!) we should shake up the tickets more, sure enough the next ticket drawn was Margie’s – she picked the SDJC Logo wine tote, bottle of wine, and vintage wine glass. Margie – you can’t ever say I don’t listen to you! The Brigantine Chef did an outstanding job in presenting three equally delicious entrees choices – I had not one complaint, but instead compliments on the food and service. The biggest problem of the day was the microphone system, my apologies to everyone. But somehow our leader, George Klein, managed to stand in the middle of the room and make his introductions of the leaders of the club as well as announcements for the future events. While enjoying my decadent chocolate dessert, I could only smile looking around the room and thinking how lucky I am that this club has awarded me many precious memories and friendships throughout the years. JOCLA CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE Sunday, May 20, 2018

Report by Dave Allen Photos by Dave & Matt Allen and Chuck Leuthen

Concours d’Elegance season has started in So Cal! The first local JCNA event of the 2018 season was the LA Club Concours, held May 20th at the Muckenthaler Cultural Center in Fullerton. The event was well attended, and included several San Diego members entering cars and also to add to the judging team. The Concours event is part of the Muckenthaler Motorcar Festival, which was first conducted in 1994, and features beautiful and rare automobiles. The show is held on the 8-acre lawn of the Muckenthaler Mansion and the Jaguars occupied the North-West Corner. This is the first time we’ve been to Muckenthaler Motorcar Festival and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The facilities are excellent; the venue is first class, with live music and great selections of snacks. The cars displayed covered all eras from turn of the century brass cars to the latest high-powered Jaguars and Corvettes. Even the iconic Batmobile was there! The weather was cool and overcast most of the day and some of the attendees saw rain on their way to the Concours. Polishing and cleaning on the field was intense to prepare the cars for judging. 26 cars were judged and 6 on display. The table below summarizes the SDJC entries.

Notes from the Judges Tent

By Pete Rieth, Chief Judge, San Diego Jaguar Club

Concours Day is just around the corner. Mark Hodges and his team of Concours specialists are in full swing as we get ready for another memorable day. There is only one remaining Concours 301 Refresher Training session slated this year. Training convenes on Saturday June 16th beginning at 9 AM at Classic Showcase.

Judges who did not attend the May 12th training session, please RSVP to me that you plan to attend on June 16th so that there will be plenty of refreshments and training materials available. Keep in mind that you must receive this refresher training annually to retain your current status as a JCNA Concours Judge. If you cannot be present on June 16th, contact me and we will make alternative, individual arrangements.

JCNA Concours Judged Divisions.

There are three Divisions of judged Entries at JCNA Concours, Champion Division (including Preservation Class), Driven Division and Special Division.

Champion Division is the most demanding JCNA Concours Division. It challenges its Entrants to research, prepare, and present the judged portions of their cars in their original, authentic, factory-delivered configuration, and condition. All Entries in Champion Division will have their interiors, exteriors, engine compartments, and boots judged for authenticity, condition, and cleanliness, including tools and manuals, if applicable.

Driven Division also challenges its Entrants to research prepare, and present their Entries in their original, authentic, factory-delivered configuration and condition. However, Driven Division is for Jaguars that, regardless of age, are in regular use. In consideration of this usage, Driven Division Entries do not have their engine compartments or boots judged and certain convenience and safety-related authenticity exceptions are allowed. The exteriors and interiors of Driven Division Entries are judged to the same standard as Champion Division. Driven Division Entries are encouraged to be driven under their own power from their normal place of garaging to the concours site and return. Towing or trailering is allowed for 35-year and older Entries. BUT NOT ONTO THE FIELD!!!

Special Division is intended for factory and non-factory-prepared competition and limited production Jaguars; production Jaguars privately prepared for competition; modified production Jaguars, and Jaguar powered vehicles with replica Jaguar bodies. The interior, exterior, engine compartment, and boot of Special Division Entries are judged only for condition and cleanliness, NOT for authenticity.

Letters to the Editor

Historic Vehicle Plates’ You may have seen a California Historic Vehicle plate on one of the cars in our club and wondered, what’s the deal? Briefly, cars over 25 years old and later than 1922 can save on registration fees by applying for one and agreeing to certain restrictions. Last year a couple of my collector cars registrations were close to $400 each and increasing, making the switch worth the effort, especially now that DMV fees are no longer deductible. The DMV does not make it obvious how to accomplish this, so here’s the skinny. First, the restrictions: The DMV says, “the vehicle for which these plates are issued is primarily driven in historic exhibitions, parades, or historic club activities.” In this context “historic” does not seem to have any clear meaning, so it boils down to exhibitions, parades, or club activities. If you have classic car insurance, you may already have similar restrictions. Fees for Historic Plates are the same regardless of the value of the car and currently are, as near as I can tell, $92 per year plus $25 the first year for your new plates. The DMV site’s claim that you can apply online seems to be untrue as the links lead you in a circle. So, I found it necessary to use paper. The application can be difficult to find on the DMV web site. The easiest thing to do is use the DMV site’s Search box and look for “reg 17a”. The form serves many purposes, making it a bit confusing. My instructions assume you already have a CA license plate. All you need to do is 1) check the box by ORIGINAL in the upper left; 2) fill in SECTION 1 with the owner information as it appears on your title, 3) check the box by Auto at the start of SECTION 2; 4) fill in the VIN towards the upper right in SECTION 2; 5) sign and date part E of SECTION 2; and 6) in SECTION 5 on page 2 sign, date and supply your phone number. Processing applications is very slow. If you are less than two months from your renewal date you will need to go to a DMV office. This process cannot be done at AAA or similar places. If there’s enough time, definitely make an appointment. I recommend one early in the day so they have less time to get behind. If an appointment isn’t available before your renewal date, you will have to drop in. Conditions vary wildly. My last two drop-in visits took one hour and almost four hours. Once you actually are served, the DMV representative will almost certainly have no idea what you are talking about. You need to explain that the application is a substitute for renewing your registration, not an addition to it. After the Rep gets an instruction book and learns what to do with your form, you will need to pay and request a temporary paper tag to put in your car’s window. Ask for two months at least because you’ve heard processing the application is slow. If it’s more than two months until your registration is due, you can try applying by mail. I would include a check for $117, a copy of your current registration, the application form and a letter saying you want to switch from normal to a Historic Vehicle Plate at your renewal. It wouldn’t hurt to say you understand the restrictions. Hopefully there will be enough time for them to respond. (I applied for my plate on March 1 and received it on April 20.) Tom Wright, Member SDJC Thanks for the great info and insight Tom. -Ed.

Our June Contest: Who’s Got the Legs?

Can you identify the owners of these legs? They belong to:

A. Bob Proctor and Olga Quale.

B. Nedra Rummell and Paul Novak.

C. Diah Martin and Kathy Leuthen.

D. Tim Bennett and Mitch Cohen.

Answers in next month’s Jaguar Tracks.

Send any and all positive comments, feedback and suggestions to [email protected]. Complaints and criticisms can be sent to my wife Kathy who is keeping a rather extensive file. Email address upon request.

There’s always a few pictures that end up on the cutting room floor due to potential embarrassment to certain club members if placed in Jaguar Tracks. Here’s this month’s four:

Editor’s note: Remember when going out of town to print out a copy of the cover page of the most

recent “Jaguar Tracks” and take it with you. When you find a good setting just snap a picture of yourselves holding up the cover page with a nice view of the scene behind you. And if you’ve got your Jag in the shot, even better. Then all you need to do when you get home is email the picture to [email protected] along with a description of where you’re at and I’ll do the rest to feature it in a “Where in the Word” article!

Cars must remain in the display area until 3:00 p.m. The show awards will be announced at about 2:45 p.m. Free parking will be available to those people who wish to remain at the fair after the car show is over. Time: 1:00 pm

Location: Timeshare Exit Team Showcase Stage

If you can’t remember a time when Frankie Avalon wasn’t a part of your life, you aren’t alone. This

talented performer can look back on a career that spans three generations of music, television and

motion pictures, which he feels is due primarily to the loyalty and trust of his audience.

Frankie’s years as a “teenage idol” have been succeeded by maturity and professionalism. He currently is

one of the busiest concert performers in the country, playing the nation’s finest casinos, theaters and

performing arts centers as well as headlining top Las Vegas hotel main rooms. Frankie has a long string of

Gold Record Million-Seller singles and albums including the number-one chart hits “Venus” and “Why”. In

1959 alone Frankie had six solid hits that were in the top 40, and his music became one of the defining

sounds of the pre-Beatles rock ‘n’ roll era.

His motion picture career has already spanned some 30 films. Frankie’s starring roles in the highly successful “Beach Party” film series, are perhaps quickest to recall. However, Frankie has always been proudest of his dramatic roles in “The Dark”, “The Alamo”, “Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea”, “Guns of the Timberland” and his comedic talent in “Skidoo”, “Sail a Crooked Ship”, “I’ll Take Sweden”, “Ski Party” and “Sergeant Deadhead.”
