MK:SMART Data HubIn October 2015 UCMK officially opened its doors to over 200 guests and exhibitors to showcase the cutting-edge MK:Smart Data Hub. The Data Hub is at the centre of the collaborative MK:Smart project, enabling business, public services and everyday citizens to use data to improve their decision-making. The Apex Suite, our technology and innovation hub, is proving popular with businesses and other groups. Bookings are currently handled through Rajinder Sharma here at UCMK. A new course to meet the needs of MK entrepreneurs will start in the Spring of this year, the PgCert Enterprise Creation, has sparked a good deal of interest.

NEw fACIlITIES fOR STUDENTSIn the summer of 2015 the Vice Chancellor unveiled our new UCMK facilities which include a library and quiet study area, business pods, a journalism suite, a graphic art lab, staff and postgraduate offices, and lecture rooms. As a result of the upgrade the campus is now fully equipped to support an increasing number of students studying a diverse and expanded portfolio of courses.

UCMK student internships with Parks TrustTwo lucky UCMK students will be given the opportunity to work as interns with the events team at the Parks Trust, supporting major events in its outdoor parks and green spaces including projects such as National Play Day and world Picnic Day. This is a wonderful opportunity that will allow them to gain work experience at the ‘sharp end’ that will put them in an excellent position when they come to embarking on their careers.

RISINg TO THE CHAllENgE...Students in six teams from schools in Milton Keynes and luton had the opportunity to research, design and produce creative solutions to challenging engineering problems through the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) ‘faraday Challenge’ at UCMK in 2015. The IET, one of the world’s leading professional societies for the engineering and technology community, hosted the event in partnership with the University’s department of Computer Science and Technology and its Access Partnership team. Teams from Walton High School, Sir Herbert Leon Academy, St Paul’s Catholic School and Ashcroft High School got the chance to design and create a prototype using new technologies including 3D printers, specialist circuits and design software – resources that many of the students had never used before.
