Over 3,500,000 litres of Hempacore sold since its successful launch!

Our Hempacore intumescent coatings provide proven passive fi re protection for cellulosic fi res, as well as long-term performance and reliability. They were launched in 2012 and feature as some of our best-selling products! We have asked one of our key specialists in Intumescent coatings, Pere Catala, R&D Manager for Passive Fire Protection, what is behind the success.

The Hempacore range of one-component solvent-borne acrylic intumescent coatings provide up to 150 minutes of fi re protection in cellulosic fi res and have shown very good performance in offi cial fi re tests.

Hempacore coatings meet EN13381-8, BS476-21, GOST 53295, GB 14907 fi re protection standards and have the CE marking and Certifi re certifi cation.

Pere, can you introduce yourself?

I have a background in MSc Chemistry. I joined Hempel in 1992 and worked in several positions related to new product development, testing and support of antifouling products, including R&D Manager for Antifouling globally. Since 2010, I’ve been working as R&D Manager for Passive Fire Protection with responsibility for global development from our Laboratory in Spain.

You have been involved in Hempacore from the very beginning. What do you think contributed to the successful launch?

First of all, Hempel has over 100 years of experience in the development and production of protective coatings in the most demanding environments. And we have been working with intumescent coatings for many years. Therefore, we do have the necessary capabilities and know-how.

When the decision about the development of the new advanced intumescent product line was taken we immediately expanded our R&D laboratory in Spain with dedicated

facilities, specialising in fire protection coatings. This new centre is fully equipped with the most advanced equipment to carry out development and internal testing of intumescent products. The centre is composed of facilities for lab and pilot scale batch manufacture, a large spray-booth for paint application and fire test facilities, with several test furnaces.

At the same time, we put together a team of specialists from the industry with years of experience in intumescent product development, which successfully contributed to the fast development and launch. You have mentioned a specialised lab. What does the testing of intumescent coatings entail?

You have to differentiate between external testing for product certification, performed at accredited test laboratories, and internal testing during product development, normally carried out at the manufacturer’s own facilities.

When developing competitive products, it is essential to carry out a wide test programme internally in order to have

Hempacore at a glance

the highest chances of passing the external testing.

Three key properties of intumescent products must be thoroughly tested during product development.

Firstly, the coating’s thermal insulation properties when exposed to fire, are tested. This determines how efficient the product is for various types of steel profiles for given fire ratings and massivity ranges.

Secondly, we test durability properties, i.e. the coating’s ability to withstand different end-use exposure conditions during the lifetime of the building

And thirdly and very importantly, is the intumescent paint’s compatibility with a wide range of primers and topcoats, which form the coating system to be applied onto the steel substrate to be protected. Of course, it is essential to have well-equipped facilities for fire and climatic exposure testing, similar to those used by accredited test centres.

And what is the feedback from customers?

In general, our customers appreciate the very good application properties of Hempacore products. For example, Hempacore One can be applied up to 1500 µm DFT. It means in many cases one coat is fully sufficient for the required fire protection rating. It decreases the total application time and increases our customers’ productivity.

We also provide support during the specification phase and technical service during application, thus contributing to the smooth completion of the project.

Hempel to protect Dubrovnik Airport

The Consortium KFK Tehnika and Kamgrad – Zagreb-based companies, won the huge project of reconstructing Dubrovnik Airport. It is worth mentioning that Hempel has an excellent business relationship with these two companies. Tom d.d. Uskoplje, a large Bosnia and Herzegovina based metal processing factory, with an annual production output of 10,000 tons of steel structures, has been chosen as a sub-contractor for this project. Our proven fl exibility in providing trusted coating solutions, outstanding technical support and quick supplies have now been a decisive factor in winning this project. The project includes the construction of a new passenger terminal and storage facilities. The new terminal will stretch over 36,500 square metres and will have the capacity to handle 3.5 million passengers annually.

The challenge

To protect structural steelwork of the new passenger terminal building part C and canopy BC against corrosion and fi re and ensure a durable and attractive appearance.

Prolonged protection for CLH’s new fuel logistics centre

Prolonged protection for CLH’s new fuel logistics centre

Last December, Compañía Logística de Hidrocarburos (CLH) completed the construction of a new plant for petroleum products in the Port of Bilbao. With an investment of €18.2 million, the project is set to improve the fuel storage and distribution system in the Basque Country and border communities. The facility, opened by the President of the Regional Government, Iñigo Urkullu, accompanied by the chairman of CLH, José Luis López de Silanes, comprises eight tanks capable of storing up to 123,200 cubic metres of gasoline, diesel, kerosene, biofuels and other products with total fl exibility. In addition to responding to the expected growing demand for fuel in the area, the plant consolidates the Port of Bilbao as a “reference space for large shipping fl eets serving industry” and as the “main attraction hub” for investment, as the Basque President pointed out.

The plant is operational 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, so it is paramount that maximum effi ciency, safety and protection are

assured at all times. For that reason, CLH, a leader in the transportation and storage of petroleum products in the Spanish market, sought the help of Hempel. Given the characteristics of the project, it was necessary to fi nd a versatile system offering high corrosion resistance, as well as being able to maintain a fl awless appearance in the long term.

Consequently, the outer surfaces of the tanks were painted with a system consisting of Hempel’s Galvosil E 15BES anti-corrosion paint, the two-component epoxy Hempadur 45200 Hi-Build, and a topcoat of Hempel’s Polyenamel 55102, which provides excellent gloss and colour retention. The Asturian company, Contratas y Sistemas CYS, was responsible for applying the coatings.

The piping network that connects the tanks called for a system consisting of Hempel’s Galvosil E 15BES, Hempadur Avantguard® 750 and Hempadur Hi-Build 45200, which together provide

effective protection for exposed steel structures in highly corrosive environments, and a topcoat of Hempel’s Polyenamel 55102, which is especially resistant to the fuels stored inside. Application of this part of the project was entrusted to the Galician company, Prefabricados y Montajes Noroeste (Premonor), a consolidated collaborator of Hempel.

Practice makes perfect; Teamwork makes us unbeatable

Hempel customer, Azertexnolayn, a state-of-the-art industrial manufacturer based in Baku, was established in 2013 and is now a leading fi gure in Azerbaijan’s dynamic infrastructure modernisation programme. It produces a wide range of steel and plastic products to the highest international standards, backed by globally-recognised certifi cates including ISO 9001, ISO 18001, and ISO 14001. Its steel piping division is housed in a 27,000m2 facility with an annual production capacity of 200,000 tonnes of spiral welded steel piping, ranging from 400 mm to more than 2 metres in diameter.

Through our Russian Federation offi ce, Hempel is proud to have been selected as purveyor of high-durability coatings to protect their steel pipes, but as always, our mission goes beyond the simple delivery of paint cans to the workshop. In fact, in November

2015, Hempel’s local representative and technical service engineers were on-site working with Azertexnolayn’s Coatings and Insulation Department to oversee and advise on application methods and techniques, and to verify the fi nal thickness of the fi nished coatings.

The piping in question has a diameter of 1422mm with an exterior surface satisfactorily blasted to SA2½. A trial application was then administered with a fi rst layer of 20 litres of undiluted Hempadur Quattro 17634, using an airless spray method at an ambient temperature of +20ºC. Hempadur Quattro 17634 is a two-component epoxy paint that cures to a hard, tough coating with good resistance to abrasion, seawater and various oils, specially designed for use in atmospheric service piping and ballast tanks, for in-shop applications, where fast recoating and handling is required.

Just 6 hours later, our technicians oversaw the application of the second coat, consisting of undiluted, grey-tinted Hempadur Multi-Strength GF 35879, our amine-adduct cured epoxy coating

reinforced with glass-fl akes to produce a hard, impact- and abrasion-resistant high-build coating, used primarily for areas subject to abrasion and/or to a highly corrosive environment.

Hempel staff measured the DFT of both coats and issued a report to the customer of its fi ndings and recommendations, both for fi ne-tuning Azertexnolayn’s already-acceptable application techniques and for improving handling and storage of the coated piping. This case study is a great example of how Hempel helps its clients to get the most out of their assets and our products, on this occasion making sure that Azertexnolayn’s products reach their fi nal destination in Turkmenistan in optimum condition.

Porsche and Hempel - Common values, extraordinary standards

Innovation, beautiful design and practicality – Award-winning ingredients in Prague

Innovation, beautiful design and practicality – Award-winning ingredients in Prague

The Troja Bridge over the River Vltava in the Czech capital Prague is now in full use following its official opening in late 2014. The 262m long bridge carries pedestrian and cycle traffic, four lanes of road traffic, and a double-tracked tram line. Designed by Mott MacDonald, constructed by Metrostav and coated by Hempel, it is already a landmark in Prague, famous for its slender arch and low height-to-span ratio.

In fact, the innovative design of the Troja Bridge lies in the fact that it reconfigures the hangers of the classic bowstring arch from a conventional vertical arrangement to a diagonal one, thus providing four times more rigidity and improving overall performance. Such innovation could not go unnoticed and in 2015, the Troja Bridge won the ECCS’s Steel Bridge Award. In the words of the jury: “The beautiful design is developed to suit the construction process and carries the heavy loads of tramways, cars, and pedestrians into the heart of Prague. The bridge promotes the qualities of steel by its visible slender structure and elegance. The effective lighting accentuates the expressive form. […] Troja Bridge is like a sculpture, and a beautiful addition to the city of Prague.”

Significant words of praise for a project that, for Hempel, started like any other, with our coating advisors defining the most appropriate system for the customer’s specifications. However, its unique design called for a unique solution and finally a high zinc primer was specified. Our two-component, zinc-rich epoxy primer Hempadur Zinc 17360 to a hard-wearing, highly weather-resistant coating and is used as a versatile, long-term primer on steel in severely corrosive environments. On this occasion, the primer was applied in the workshop before the main steel parts were transported to the site. Following touch-up work in assembly areas, a second primer and intermediate layers were applied using Hempadur Fast Dry 15560, which enabled work to progress smoothly while also reducing the risk of affecting property around the site. Finally, the bridge was roller-coated with Hempathane HS 55610, the fast-dry version of our polyurethane topcoat with zinc phosphate that provides the highest standards of

long-lasting colour fastness and dries to touch in just 3 hours at 20ºC.

An extra intermediate layer of Hempadur Fast Dry 15560 was used on structural steel parts anchored in concrete, and the entire system was successfully validated in accordance with Ministry of Transport regulations for 30 years’ service life and tested in an accredited laboratory for high durability in C5-I environments.

Porsche and Hempel – Common values, extraordinary standards

The Olympiapark was constructed for the 1972 Summer Olympics and is located in the area of Munich known as the “Oberwiesenfeld”, north-west of the city centre. Used as a venue for cultural, social, and religious events throughout the year, the Olympiapark borders the Lerchenauer Straße to the east, the Moosacher Straße to the north and the Landshuter Allee up to the bank of the Willi-Gebhard to the west and is one of the most fashionable districts of the city. That is why prestigious car manufacturers Porsche chose the area as the site for their new dealership, protected by Hempel coatings.

Porsche’s specifications were logically very stringent for this hallmark building, and Hempel’s system was found to provide the excellent finish with different levels of lustre that the designers sought. The 6,000m2 of steel were primed with Hempel’s Uni-Primer 13140, a single-component primer that offers fast-drying and fast-reworking properties on steel and other metal surfaces. This primer is especially suitable for use with Hempatex in mild to medium corrosive environments, as is the case for Olympiapark.

The steel was then given an intermediate layer of Hempacore One FD 43601, the fast-drying version of our intumescent coatings that provide up to 120 minutes’ retardation in the event of fire, naturally a factor of great importance in any building designed for public access. Again, applicators Große-Ophoff Korrosionsschutz requested the fast-drying version to enable easy processing while maintaining its full fire-resistance and corrosion-protection properties. None of these paints require dilution, which makes for a tougher coating and lower levels of damage during transport and installation on site.

Hempatex Enamel 56360 was used as the topcoat, not only because it is a fast-drying solution but also because of its ability to produce highly appealing surface finishes, even in complex RAL shades.

Porsche proudly highlights the four principles that underwrite the values and philosophy behind the brand’s motor cars: Tradition and Innovation; Performance and Practicality; Design and Functionality; and Exclusiveness and Social Acceptance - we are absolutely confident that our Hempel coatings uphold and enhance those same values. Indeed, together, Porsche and Hempel epitomise the ‘best of the best’.

10 11Bright future for historic structure saved from demolition

Bright future for historic structure saved from demolition Throughout 2016, life will be restored to the De Hef Bridge in Rotterdam, the oldest rail bridge in the city, which has had a colourful history and is set to have an equally colourful future, when maintenance to overhaul the paintwork on this magnifi cent steel structure is completed.

The earliest parts of the bridge were built in 1878, however, the complete bridge, including the central lift, was opened in 1927 and served the city centre of Rotterdam for many years, until 24 September 1993 when the tracks were run through a tunnel under the River Maas. The authorities then intended to demolish the bridge, but that decision was overturned due to public uproar and the bridge has stood as a signifi cant monument in the Netherlands’ foremost port ever since.

The bridge was last overhauled in early 90s, and in 2015 the decision was made to blast and recoat this city landmark with a modern, 3-layer system, which Hempel is supplying. It is a sensitive case that Hempel coating advisors are planning to monitor very closely from start to fi nish. The corrosion environment is classed as C4, but the owners specifi cation required a C5-I very high coating system, according to NEN EN ISO 12944-6, so the system chosen by local applicators Schildersbedrijf N. van der Ham B.V. envisages a coating

comprised of two 130 µm coats of Hempadur Mastic 45880 covered by one 60 µm of Hempathane TL87/EG 87480, colour 47650 (NS 116).

The central lift section will be removed for blasting and coating on land, while the 2 pylons and land bridges will be coated on site. One issue that makes this job a little more complex is that the bridge was built with thousands of pop rivets, which will be pre-treated by brush like other more inaccessible areas before the entire structure is coated using airless equipment.

Our two-component, polyamide adduct-cured, high-solids, high-build epoxy Hempadur Mastic 45880 forms a very tough and resistant coating that is ideal as a self-primed intermediate or fi nishing coat in heavy duty paint systems where low VOC and high fi lm build are required.

Hempathane TL87/EG 87480 is a two-component acrylic polyurethane coating that contains micaceous iron oxide and aluminium and is especially recommended as topcoat for steel constructions, tanks exteriors and bridges. Our coating advisors provided the

local authorities with certifi cation documents of the suitability of the coating system, which is due to be completed in late 2016.

Hempel is keen to support the contractors and people of Rotterdam in ensuring the best possible solution for this highly visible project, which, although not in use, remains one of the city’s foremost bridges.
