WYANDOTTE Fridays unusuallyhigh level of absences, many becausepupils expereinced flulike symptoms,prompted school officials to thorough-

ly sanitize Washington ElementarySchool over the weekend and againMonday.

Attendance is returning to normalat Washington and there have been nosigns of sickness within the buildingtoday, School Supt. Carla Harting saidMonday afternoon. We do not knowhow many students were affected byillness, as not all parents tell us whytheir child is not in school. Those thatdid ranged from illness to vacation.

Kristen McMaster, the schools prin-cipal, sent a letter to parents Fridayafternoon explaining the situation.She said the staff was doing its part inclassrooms to sanitize desks and rein-

force hand washing.We have contacted the Wayne

County Health Department and arefollowing proper procedures for clean-ing and sanitizing the building,McMaster said in the letter. If yourchild is having flulike symptoms,

please contact our office so we canmonitor the number of students withthese symptoms.

The principal asked parents andguardians to keep their children homeat least 24 hours if flulike symptomsappear and to follow up with theirpediatrician. She also requestedthey remind their children about theimportance of regularly washing theirhands.

Harting said the districts opera-tions department did a thoroughcleaning over the weekend and wasexpected to do more cleaning Mondaynight.

In Dearborn Heights, Annapolis

High School was closed Friday dueto high absences. Cleaning crewsscrubbed down the building aftermore than a third of students were outsick last week.

In the Annapolis case, county healthdepartment officials suspect a noro-

virus, defined by the federal Centersfor Disease Control and Prevention asa very contagious virus that can betransmitted from an infected person,contaminated food or water or bytouching a contaminated surface.

No medical determination has beenmade concerning the outbreak thataffected students in Wyandotte.

Washington Elementary School isat 1440 Superior, south of Ford Avenueand north of Eureka Road in the cen-tral part of the city.

HURON TWP. Staffand students at HuronHigh School are reelingand grief counselors are on hand after news that one of theschools most popular students was killed in an out-of-statecar accident Sunday evening.

James Jimmy Franklin Williams, 16, a junior at thehigh school, died in the crash.

According to Wistv.com, an NBC affiliate, Ricky LanceDeel, 34, of Beaufort, S.C., was arrested after the crash andcharged with felony driving under the influence. He was

transported to the Fairfield County Detention Center.Seven people were in the Dodge Durango that was hit by

Deel.

Hundreds of HuronHigh School studentsgathered Monday evening trying to get a grip on whatseems to be the impossible right now the death of aclassmate.

Clutching candles and wiping tears, administrators,staff, students, family and friends came together for a can-dlelight vigil for 16-year-old James Franklin Williams.

Jimmy Williams, the son of former Heritage MediaPublisher James Williams, was killed Sunday eveningwhen the Dodge Durango he and his family were riding inmade contact with a vehicle driven by a 34-year-old manallegedly under the influence of alcohol.

Those close to the family say Jimmy was ejected from thevehicle as it rolled on I-77 just outside of Columbia, S.C.
