OneongoingprojectattheTumut3(T3)andBloweringpowerstationsinvolvesreplacingdieselstandbygenerators,whichkickintogearifthestationneedsback-uppowerwhenthemainsupplyislost.Thevalueofthesegeneratorscan’tbeunderestimated-formonthstheT3intakehasbeenoperatingontheseback-upsuppliesbeforeanewpowerlineiscommissioned.

Ihavealwaysbelieveddreamingbighasitsrewards!Andatthemomentthereisnothingbiggerthanthehugetunnelboringmachine(TBM)thatwillexcavatethefirstmountaintunnelforourSnowy2.0project.
Itseemslikeonlyyesterdaywewereplanningthisnation-building,cleanenergypumped-hydroexpansionoftheSnowyScheme.Nowwearewitnessingrealaction,includinga2,000-tonne,11-metrediametermachinethatwilldigoutthemainaccesstunnelatLobsHoleandlineitwithconcretesegmentsmadeatthenewfactoryinPoloFlat,Cooma.
Moreoverhundredsofnewjobshavebeencreatedandlocalbusinessesarebooming.
Thisisjustoneofmanyexcitingmilestonesacrosstheproject.
LastmonthinCoomaweturnedthefirstsodontheconstructionofthe126-bedworkeraccommodationknownasJouleRidge.IwaspleasedtojoinrepresentativesfromourSnowy2.0principalcontractorFutureGenerationJointVenture,SnowyHydrodirectorsandtheSnowyMonaroRegionalCouncilMayorPeterBeertomarkanimportantdevelopmentthatwilleaselocalhousingdemand.
Itwasanothergreatdaywhenthe400-tonnecutterheadwasliftedontotheTBM(verycarefully!)inamajoroperationthatrequireda750-tonnecraneandmanyhoursofpre-planning.
We’veproudlynamedthisTBMtheLadyEileenHudson,apioneeringwomanineveryrespect,andwhowasawardedanOBEinrecognitionofhercommitmentasanambassadorfortheSnowyScheme.LadyEileen,whosehusbandwasthefirstSnowySchemeComissioner.SirWilliamHudson,wasknown,amongmany

Tantangara and Marica
ProgressontheSnowy2.0projectcontinuestopickupspeed,withthenumberofworkersrampingupacrossmultiplesites.AtTantangara(picturedabove),theupperreservoirontheeasternsideoftheproject,workhasbegunonexcavationoftheaditfortheheadracetunnel.
ThissitewillsoonstarttolooksimilartothemainaccesstunnelatLobsHole,withaportalbigenoughtoenablesafeaccessforthethirdofthreetunnelboringmachines(TBMs)tobegintunnelling.ConstructionofaccessroadscontinueshereandoveratMarica,locatedabovewheretheundergroundpowerstationwillbebuilt.WorkhasalsostartedontheMaricacamp,inreadinessforworkerswhowillbebasedinthisarealaterintheproject.
Lobs Hole
WehaveseenthefinalassemblyofthefirstTBMtobeginthetunnellingrequiredtoprovidethefirstaccesstotheundergroundpowerstation.ThisTBMhasbeennamedLadyEileenHudsonafterthewifeofSirWilliamHudson,theSnowyScheme’sfirstcommissioner.
Itwasanexcitingmomentwhenthe400-tonnecutterheadwasliftedintoplace-thisoperationwasverycarefullyplannedandexecutedusingthe750-tonnecranebasedatthemainaccesstunnelportal.Priortothis,thefront,middleandtailshieldswereassembled,alongwithgantries1,2and3andtheconnectionbridgeintotheTBMcradle.
Gantry1containstheoperatorcabinandthegroutingsystem,gantry2hasthetransformersandthesegmentunloader,andgantry3hasthehydraulicpowerpacksandaircompressors.Allup,thisTBMisequippedwithsevengantriesandoneconnectionbridgetoholdtheauxiliarysupplysystems.
Thespoilconveyorhasbeeninstalledfromthefrontofthemachinetotheendofgantry3andwillcarrydebrisfromthecutterheadtoapileoutsidethetunnel,wheretruckswilltransportittodesignatedspoillocations.Alsoonboardaretwoprobedrillswhichwillcollectcoresamplesoftherock,andifrequired,groutaheadofthetunnellingtoaddstrengthandstabilitytothesurroundingrockpriortoexcavation.
ECVT
Theportalfortheemergency,cableandventilationtunnel(ECVT)isstartingtotakeshape.Excavationhasbeenprimarilythroughblasting,withmorethan40,000kilogramsofexplosivesusedandapproximately100loadsofmaterialfromthesitemovedperdayforuseonothersitesaroundLobsHole.
TheLadyEileenHudsontunnelboringmachine,whichat137metresislongerthanastandardfootballfield,willborethemainaccesstunnelinpreparationforexcavationofthecavernthatwillhousethepowerstation.Theentire2,300-tonnemachinewillthenbedisassembledandrebuiltattheTalbingoadittoexcavatethetailracetunnel.Picturedleftisthetailskinbeinginstalled.

Exploratory Camp
ItwasabusyfewmonthsoversummerfinalisingconstructionoftheExploratoryCampatLobsHole.Thecampnowhasaround330workerslivingthere,withgeneratorsupandrunningtopowerthekitchen,dinerandlaundry.Thegym,accommodationandwetmessbuildingareinthelaststagesofcommissioning.
NewworkfrontsopeningupacrosstheSnowy2.0projectmeanmorejobsfortheregion.Snowy2.0principalcontractorFutureGenerationJointVentureislookingtofillhundredsofrolesacrossplantandequipment,construction,administrationandmore.WithtunnellingactivitiesrampingupatLobsHole,dozensofTBMmechanicalrolesmustbefilledinthecomingmonths.WorkersarealsowantedtobuildtheaccommodationcampsatMaricaandTantangara,andatthesegmentfactoryatPoloFlat.
ProjectsafetyremainsournumberonepriorityandFutureGenerationJointVentureisrecruitinghealth,safetyandenvironmentofficers,advisorsandmanagerswhowillbedeployedacrossprojectsites.
Therearenowmorethan1,000peopleworkingontheSnowy2.0project,withhundredsofjobsgoingtolocalapplicants.

WHO WANTS TO NAME A TBM?
The27kilometresoftunnelslinkingTantangaraandTalbingodamswiththenewSnowy2.0underground
powerstationwillbeexcavatedusingthreetunnelboringmachines,orTBMs.
ThemammothmachineshavebeenshippedinpiecesfromGermanyandChinaandtransportedtotheSnowyMountainsbyroad.Onceassembledandreadytolaunch,thereisatraditiontonameeachmachine,whichissaidtobestowgoodluckontheprojectbeforetunnellingcommences.
Likeshipsandhurricanes,TBMsarenamedafterwomen-acustomthatdatesbacktothe1500sandStBarbara,thepatronsaintofminers,engineersandtunnels.
OneoftheSnowy2.0TBMshasbeennamedtheLadyEileenHudson.LadyEileen’shusband,SirWilliamHudson,wasconsideredthe‘father’oftheSnowyScheme.LadyEileenplayedanimportantroleasambassadorfortheSchemeandshealsocuttheribbonattheofficialopeningoftheGuthegaTunnel.Almostsevendecadeson,theTBMnamedinherhonourisstartingthetunnellingforSnowy2.0atLobsHole.
TheremainingtwoTBMswillbenamedafterAustralianwomenleadinginthefieldsofscience,technology,engineeringandmathematics(STEM),withthehelpofschoolsfromaroundtheSnowyMountainsregion.Studentsfromyears5to12willcomeupwithaselectionofnamesforconsiderationwiththenamesshortlistedbySnowyHydroandFutureGenerationJointVenture,beforegoingtoapubliconlinevote.

Afteralmost50yearsofoperation,theoriginalstandbygeneratorsatTumut3PowerStation
andintakestructurehavereachedtheir‘endoflife’,andhavebeenreplacedwiththelatesttechnologytoensurethestation’songoingreliability.
Asapeakenergyprovider,SnowyHydromustbereadytogeneratepowerintotheelectricitygridatanygiventime.Thismeansourpowerstationsneedtobeavailabletoproduceclean,renewableenergy24/7,365-days-a-year.
TosupportourmarketpositionandensurethestabilityofelectricitysupplytotheNational
ElectricityMarket,ourassetshaveback-uppowersystems.
Duringthe2020bushfires,theincomingpowersuppliestoJounamaSmallHydroPowerStationandtheTumut3intakestructurewerecutoffwhenthetransmissionlinesburntdown.Theback-updieselgeneratorswerekeytoJounamaandTumut3powerstationsbeingabletocontinuetooperateuntilregularpowersupplieswererestored.
ReplacingtheoriginaldieselgeneratorshasbeenanimportantprojectforSnowyHydro.
ThegeneratorsatTumut3-installedduringconstructionofthepowerstationin1973-wereunabletobesupportedbythe
originalsuppliersandsparepartswerenolongeravailable.
Wetakeprideinmaintainingourassetstokeepthemintopcondition,andakeypartofourstrategyistomoderniseequipmentwhenmaintenanceisnolongereconomicallyfeasible.
Thesafetyofourstaff,contractors,visitorsandthecommunityisournumberonepriority,andwepartnerwithlocalorganisationswhichsharethesevalues.Forthisjob,theSnowyteamhasappreciatedthegreatworkfromlocalelectricalcontractor,PHETumut.
BloweringPowerStation’sstandbygeneratorwillalsobereplacedinthecomingmonths.

SNOWY TRAINEES
Forlocalschool-leaversfeelingdauntedbytheall-importantnextstepsontheircareerpath,joiningSnowyHydro’s
traineeprogramcanprovideavaluableentrytotheworldofwork.
Launched30yearsago,theprogramhasintroducedhundredsofyoungpeoplefromlocalcommunitiestoarangeofemploymentexperiences,fromtheapplicationandinterviewprocess,throughtoacceptingafull-timeposition.SuccessfulcandidatesareembeddedinteamsacrosstheSnowyHydrobusiness.
ManytraineeshavesecuredfurthercareeropportunitiesatSnowyHydrowithcadetships,permanentandcasualpositions,andsomehavetakenonanapprenticeship.Othersheadofftouniversity,oftenreturningtoworkatSnowyduringtheirholidays.
In2021,10traineeswillbeemployedatthemainofficeinCooma,withoneeachinTalbingoandKhancoban.AylahRiceisoneofthesuccessfulnewrecruits,andhassomefamilyexperiencetodrawon-hergrandfatherwasadieselmechanicduringtheconstructionoftheoriginalSnowyScheme.Aylah,picturedabove,
wenttoschoolinTumutandisexcitedaboutherfirstfull-timerole.Sheistakingtheyeartolearnnewskills,gainexperienceandconsiderherfuturecareer.OneoptionsheiskeentoexploreisjoiningtheRoyalAustralianAirForce.
ThetraineeprogramispartofSnowyHydro’scommitmenttosupportingthelocalcommunitythrougheducationandemploymentopportunities,andhelpingthenextgenerationgetstartedintheircareers.Around10%oftheSnowyworkforceisindevelopmentroles,withtraineesactivelycontributingtotheday-to-dayrunningofthebusiness.Havingenthusiastic,interestedyoungworkersalsobenefitsthecompanybybringingfreshperspectivesandenergytoexistingteams.
CandidatesfortraineepositionsmusthavecompletedYear12,andbewillingtostudyBusinessAdministrationatTAFEaspartoftheirprogram.CoomatraineesattendTAFEweeklyandregionaltraineesstudyonline,withamonthlyvisittoCooma.Twooflastyear’strainees,NicolasStibbardandMariaTarasyuk,arecompletingatwo-yearITtraineeship,whichisanewofferingandincludes18monthsofTAFEstudyalongsidefull-timeemployment.
Recruitmentforthenextintakeoftraineeswillbegininmid-2021,withrepresentativesfromSnowyHydrovisitinglocalschoolstopresentinformationsessionsandanswerquestionsabouttheprogram.

As we begin tunnelling for Snowy 2.0 using state-of-the-art tunnel boring machines, we take a look back at how they used to do it in the days of the Snowy Scheme construction.
FortheoriginalSnowyScheme,builtbetween1949and1974,the145kilometresofinterconnectedtunnelswereexcavatedusingthedrillandblastmethod.Heavypneumatic
drillsfittedtoathree-levelsteelframeworkcalledthe'jumbo'simultaneouslydrilledupto12holesintherockface.Eachholewasmanuallyfilledwithexplosivesbeforecrewsretreatedasafedistance.Whenthesmokeanddusthadsettledaftereachblast,amotorisedshovelcollectedthespoilanddumpeditintoa‘muck’train.Thejumbowaspropelledonrailsalongthetunnelfloor,movingfurtherintothemountainaftereachblast.
TheScheme’sfirsttunnelwasthe4.7kmGuthegatunnel,completedin1955.ThelongesttunnelsaretheEucumbene-Snowytunnel(23.5km)completedin1965,andtheEucumbene-Tumuttunnel(22.2km)completedin1959.
Theexcavationswerepermanentlysupportedusingrockbolting,amethodologydevelopedandrefinedbytheSnowyMountainsHydro-electricAuthorityinthe1950sand‘60sandstillusedinmoderndaytunnellingaroundtheworld.

SnowyHydroelectricalapprenticeandkeenphotographerIanGrant(picturedright)iscontinuallylookingforinterestingscenestoshoot,andaroundtheSnowyScheme,there’snoshortageofoptions.AnumberofIan’sphotoshavebeenselectedtoshowcasetheScheme,includingwinteryshotsaroundGuthegaPowerStationandaspectacularnightshotofJindabyneDamwall,
usingapopularstyleknownasastrophotography.
Whileastrophotographyisnothis‘goto’style,Iansayssomeimageslendthemselvestothetechniquewhich,asthenamesuggests,isallaboutthestarsandthenightsky.Whenalocationstrikeshimasapotentialcandidateforthestarrystyle,hemakestheextraefforttomonitorconditionsandorganiseashoot.
Astrophotographyrequiresaclearsky,ideallywithanewmoon,nocloudsandminimallightpollution.ThelocationoftheMilkyWayisanotherkeyconsideration.IntheSnowyMountains,Iansayslookingsouthtosouth-eastintheautumnmonthswillprovidethebestangleforgalaxyshots.
TheJindabyneDamphoto(topright)wastakeninMarch2020,notlongafterIanstarted
a12-monthtraineeshipwithSnowyHydroandjustbeforeCOVIDrestrictions.Theset-upandshoottookhalfanhour,withIan’sfatherMartin,amaintenancemanageratSnowyHydro,on-handtoshinethecar’sheadlightsonthedamwall.Iantookaroundadozenshots,experimentingwithframingandexposure.Longexposurescreatearcsoflightasthestarsmoveacrossthesky,whileashorterexposurecapturesthesprayofcountlessstarsoftheMilkyWay.
IancompletedatraineeprogramwiththeInformationManagementteamatCoomain2020andhasbegunhisfour-yearapprenticeshipthisyearatTalbingo.Onthephotographyside,heisalreadyplanninghisnextnightshootwithSnowy’sbiggestpowerstation,Tumut3,takingcentrestage.

Organisers of community events around the Snowy Mountains have high hopes for 2021, following an unpredictable year of rescheduling and cancellations due to bushfires and COVID restrictions. Snowy Hydro remains a great supporter of local communities and has invested millions of dollars in sponsorship for targeted community initiatives and events.
Tumut Cycle Classic
Aftermissingoutin2020duetotheDunnsRoadbushfire,theTumutCycleClassicreturnedinJanuarywithmorethan440cyclistsparticipatinginsupportofTumutHospital.
Experiencedridersinthelongdistanceevents(100kmand75km)setofffromTumut’sBullParkjustaftersunrise,followedbythemoresocial40kmgroupandthe20kmfamilyride.
Sinceitsinauguralracein2015,moneyraisedbyeventsponsorsincludingSnowyHydro,participantsandlocalsupporters
hasfundedthepurchaseofmuchneededhospitalequipmentandhelpedattractmedicalstaffwithessentialskills.Thisyear’sgoalof$50,000willgotowardstheupgradeofanaestheticequipment.
Snowy Trout Challenge
RecreationaltroutfishingisapopularsportintheriversandlakesoftheSnowyMountains,andnotonlyforthebraggingrights.FromOctober2020toApril2021,anglershavethechanceofreelinginoneof430trouttaggedwithcashandprizes.Thepinktagshaveauniqueidentifyingnumberwhichcorrespondstoaneventsponsor.Prizesrangefromafreemealatthelocalpubtofishingequipment,giftcertificatesandcash.
TheNSWDepartmentofPrimaryIndustry(DPI)andlocalchambersofcommercedevelopedthechallengetopromotefishingandtourismduringspringandsummer.ThebrownandrainbowtroutweretaggedbyDPIandreleasedintoSnowywaterways.SnowyHydroisthemajorsponsoroftheSnowyTroutChallenge,providingtwocashprizesof$4,500andfivemerchandisepacksworth$200each.
AlburyfishermanDirkColvillecaughtoneofthecompetitiontroutinLakeJindabyneand
almostthrewitbackbeforenoticingthepinktag.HevisitedtheDiscoveryCentreinJanuarytocollecthis$4,500cashprize.

FamilyfunisalwaystopoftheagendaatTumbafestandwhileCOVIDsafetymeasuresarenowinplaceatallcommunityevents,festivalfavouritesincludinglivemusic,marketstallsandwinetastingcontinuetoattractlocalsandvisitors.
HeldoverthelastweekendinFebruary,Tumbafestisamuch-lovedregionalcelebrationshowcasingdeliciousfreshlocalproduce,coolclimatewines,artsandcraftsandagreatline-upofmusicaltalentonthemainstage.SnowyHydroisaproudsponsorofTumbafest.
AlsoinFebruary,TumbatrekwasanothergreatopportunitytosupportTumbarumbaandgetadecentworkoutatthesametime.HostedbySnowyValleysCouncil,theeight-kilometrebushwalkwoundupthroughthehillsbehindthetownshipandwasclassedasamedium-difficultyhike.
AteamfromSnowyHydrojoinedthetrekkersagainthisyear,enjoyingplentyofspectaculardistrictviewsalongtheway.

Science of the Snowy Scheme
AcommunitypartnershiptobringtheScienceoftheSnowySchemetothePoliceCitizensYouthClubs(PCYC)
launchedinJanuary,offeringeducationalactivitiesandplentyoffuntomorethan65clubsacrossNSW.
ThepopularprogramencourageskidsattendingPCYCOutsideSchoolHours(OOSH)vacationcaretorolluptheirsleevesandgetinvolvedinscienceandengineering-basedminiprojects.Oversummer,730PCYCchildrentookpartinSnowyHydro’sSTEM-focusedlearningmodule,developedfortheNextGenerationEducationHub.
Childrenwerealsoinvitedtodesignafuturisticrenewableenergypowerstationandentertheirdesigninthe2021PCYCScienceoftheSnowyScheme
competition.Theirimaginedpowerstationmustgenerate100%Australian-basedelectricity,buttheiroperationsareopenforinterpretation,withcreativitystronglyencouraged.PastentrantshavedesignedpowerstationspoweredbyVegemite,kangaroosandofcourse,water–inspiredbythemightySnowyScheme.
