It’s a seachange without the beaches SHE spent the past few years at the top of the plus-sized modelling game in Sydney, rubbing shoulders with the likes of Teresa Palmer and Lara Bingle. But now Adelaide girl Lauren Maksimovic is turning her back on the modelling world for life as a maths and science teacher in Alice Springs. And she couldn’t be happier. Lauren said: ‘‘In the past year, I did lose a bit of weight and with that I lost my clients because I wasn’t curvaceous enough. ‘‘That was a little bit tough, because I’m not stick thin and I’m still curvy. I got down to a size 12, but you have to fit a very specific mould.’’ Lauren said the final straw came when she was then put in a difficult position by people around her who were pressuring her to con- stantly change her body shape. She said: ‘‘My agency never said anything, they were great. ‘‘But I did have clients telling me to gain more weight. Then on the other hand, I had main- stream agencies telling me ‘if you lose a bit more, we can take you on’. It was a bit messed up.’’ Lauren decided to go back to her first passion — teaching. She said: ‘‘All this made me lose a bit of my passion for modelling and I felt like I needed a break, so my partner Steven and I are moving to Alice Springs. ‘‘It’s a seachange with- out the beaches, I just needed a change.’’ Her story has also caught the attention of another former plus- sized model Katie Halchishick who started the Healthy Is The New Skinny initiative made famous after its appear- ance on Oprah in the US and Katie invited Lauren to be the ambassador. Lauren said: ‘‘I’m the healthiest I’ve ever been, so I feel like I’m in a position where I could be used as a role model. ‘‘It’s a really amazing program.’’ Creative arts grants THE Australia Coun- cil is offering Creative Australia Artists Grants of up to $80,000, to indigenous artists to produce a major cre- ative work, in any field of the arts, including music. Called 21st Century Stories: Tell It Like It Is, the grants invite Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists to tell about the world through their eyes, and why their story is important. Through their work, the artists are asked to challenge, inspire, re- mind, provoke and dazzle, to be exper- imental and able to get their ideas to thou- sands of people. The stories and ideas are to be taken from the first decade of the 21st Century, with 10 projects to be supported through this fund, over a three- year period. Projects may be in any artform including music or a combin- ation of artforms. Visit australiacouncil.- gov.au for full details and to download.
