SHE spent the past fewyears at the top of theplus-sized modellinggame in Sydney, rubbingshoulders with the likesof Teresa Palmer andLara Bingle.

But now Adelaide girlLauren Maksimovic isturning her back on themodelling world for lifeas a maths and scienceteacher in Alice Springs.And she couldn’t behappier.

Lauren said: ‘‘In thepast year, I did lose a bitof weight and with that Ilost my clients because Iw a s n ’ t c u r v a c e o u senough.

‘‘That was a little bittough, because I’m notstick thin and I’m stillcurvy. I got down to a size12, but you have to fit avery specific mould.’’

Lauren said the final

straw came when shewas then put in a difficultposit ion by peoplearound her who werepressuring her to con-stantly change her bodyshape.

She said: ‘‘My agencynever said anything, theywere great.

‘‘But I did have clientstelling me to gain moreweight. Then on theother hand, I had main-stream agencies tellingme ‘if you lose a bit more,we can take you on’. Itwas a bit messed up.’’

Lauren decided to go

back to her first passion— teaching.

She said: ‘‘All thismade me lose a bit of mypassion for modellingand I felt like I needed abreak, so my partnerSteven and I are movingto Alice Springs.

‘‘It’s a seachange with-out the beaches, I justneeded a change.’’

Her story has alsocaught the attention ofanother former plus-s i z e d m o d e l K a t i eHalchishick who startedthe Healthy Is The NewSkinny initiative madefamous after its appear-ance on Oprah in the USand Katie invited Laurento be the ambassador.

Lauren said: ‘‘I’m thehealthiest I’ve ever been,so I feel like I’m in aposition where I could beused as a role model.

‘‘It’s a really amazingprogram.’’

CreativeartsgrantsTHE Australia Coun-cil is offering CreativeAustral ia ArtistsGrants of up to $80,000,to indigenous artists toproduce a major cre-ative work, in any fieldof the arts, includingmusic.

Called 21st CenturyStories: Tell It Like ItIs, the grants inviteAboriginal and TorresStrait Islander artiststo tell about the worldthrough their eyes,and why their story isimportant.

Through their work,the artists are asked tochallenge, inspire, re-mind, provoke anddazzle, to be exper-imental and able to gettheir ideas to thou-sands of people.

The stories andideas are to be takenfrom the first decadeof the 21st Century,with 10 projects to besupported throughthis fund, over a three-year period.

Projects may be inany artform includingmusic or a combin-ation of artforms.
