Land use change trends of Indian cities: a bird’s eye view

Faculty of Planning has time and again proved it’s surfeit of talent. This time, Vidhee Avashia (Master of Environment Planning, 2007 batch) adds yet another feather to the cap, by publishing a book titled ‘Land use change trends of Indian cities: a bird’s eye view : vulnerabilities of unplanned urban growth’, co-authored with Shrutika Parihar (Master of Geomatics, 2006 batch).

The book covers urban land use patterns of 47 Indian cities, belonging to Tier I, II and III. The team analysed the satellite images of these cities in 1990, 2000, 2010 and 2017 to understand decadal growth and its pattern. The study has analysed the concrete growth, taking into account the current municipal limits. Traffic congestion has been examined, with growing urban densities of Indian cities. The study proves useful in a myriad of things viz., smart city planning, city rejuvenation and urban transformation, settlement patterns and equity, enhancing urban commons, land price projections, and urban transport.

Ms. Vidhee is a doctoral candidate at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. Her current research comprises of understanding the development and climate change adaptation interactions in the larger urban development policy framework in India.

Let the cities adapt!

Education at CEPT entails being pushed to excel. Students are urged to explore their potential not only in Academics, but various other domains especially Research. We see immense contribution by our students and faculty members in bringing light to pertinent issues

through their research work.

This time, Saurav Chowdhury, a graduating student of MURP and his dissertation guide, Subhrangsu Goswami, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Planning, won the ‘Best Paper Presenter’ award at the National Seminar on Climate Change Challenges in India: Role of Law, Policy and Management in Bengaluru. The seminar was organized by National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bengaluru on 15th June 2018.

Their paper was titled ‘Let the cities adapt! : A bottom-up approach to climate change.’ The paper was awarded the best paper among 70 other papers, presented by students, academicians and practitioners working on climate change from across the country.

The paper discussed how the increasing incidents of urban flooding in Indian cities evidently reflect the lack of adaptation and mitigation strategies of the cities against the changing climatic variability. Most of it can be touted to the fact that National missions are spread across multiple ministries and departments, which lack internal co-ordination, resulting in poor implementation.

Further, by taking the case of

Travel-learning calls for importance of social and cultural contexts; conditions for practical applications of solutions and imbibes the practice of holistic learning.

Guwahati, one of the most vulnerable cities towards urban flooding, the paper examines the need for a unified plan or policy at the city level to enhance the adaptive capacity. This plan would act as an umbrella and combine all the government missions. Its role would be to assess the city’s vulnerability and responsiveness to prioritize sectors. This would result in the formulation of strategies, which together would help in the preparation of a Strategic Plan for

know your alumni @ FP

A recipient of the prestigious Chevening Scholarship for the Young India Environment Management Program (YIEM) by the British High Commission, she is the founder director of her own consultancy firm, NOVARCH CONSULTANTS INDIA PVT. LTD. (NCIPL). She is an alumnus of both School of Architecture 2001 and Faculty of Planning batch 2003, CEPT University.

AVS: How are you associated with the profession currently?

MG: My association with Architecture and Planning is both at professional level through my consultancy firm

NCIPL as well as at an Academic level through my research papers and publications. I am also an active Urban Farmer and also regularly associate with activities in support of gender equality.

AVS: Ma’am, can you briefly explain your work profile?

MG: My firm NCIPL works on Architecture, Engineering and Planning projects all over India. We design and plan urban infrastructure, planning, industrial clusters, Factories, commercial and interior projects. We work with large corporate houses, Institutions, PMC firms & collaborate with like-minded design sensitive professionals in our projects.

I am also associated with N-AERUS network of researchers in Europe and Asia and WiSE (Women in Science and Engineering),India. I support a magazine called ‘e-She’, giving voice the stories of unconventional women. I have also published as part of a book called ‘Gender and Built Environment’.

AVS: It’s been a long time since you graduated. But if you try to recollect, how was the transition from academics to profession?

MG: Why does it have to be a transition! I regularly strive to mainstream academics as part of my professional practice, whether it is taking up the LEED and GRIHA courses or it is writing research papers or visiting colleges as a Jury. I believe an academic outlook not only enriches your professional work but enables you to give back to the society.

Professional life is in fact more empowering as you have direct opportunities to undertake ground work. The brilliant academic exposure offered at CEPT gives you tremendous confidence to believe

and accomplish.

AVS: Please share some of your non-academic experiences from your days at Faculty of Planning.

MG: My 7 years at CEPT were replete with experiences. During my FP days, I organized events as coordinator, Ahmedabad chapter of SPIC MACAY. I did theatre both on and off campus. I worked with an NGO on Kutch disaster relief and also got my first International opportunity to present a paper at University of Indonesia. The Masters in Planning opened up my world view and the exposure to the professional world was also commendable.

AVS: Lastly, I would like to request you to share a message for the students.

MG: I would urge the students to make the best of their time at campus, engage extensively with their areas of interest, read and discuss their thoughts openly with faculty and seniors and most importantly enrich their own world view. Always have faith in your abilities and the sky will be the limit!

Planning Principles for TOD in Indian cities

The concept of Transit Oriented Development (TOD) gives an opportunity to channelize urban planning reforms in Indian cities. CEPT University recently organized a workshop on “Planning Principles for TOD in Indian cities” along with Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation to discuss the same on 7th July, 2018 at Courtyard by Marriot, Ahmedabad.

The intent of the workshop was to debate the quintessential question- “What should be the planning framework for making TOD work in Indian cities?” along with aspects of affordable housing and parking policies with respect to TOD. Held over three sessions on these topics, the workshop provided valuable insight into crucial aspects of TOD.

The workshop saw participation from institutions including IIT-Delhi, ITDP, IBI, WRI, DDA and AMC as panelists. Faculty members from CEPT University and other distinguished members from the planning fraternity also participated. Research Associates from CRDF- Ananya, Anshula, Bhavna, Kavina, Prasanth, Rachita and Shaival under Prof.Rutul Joshi, presented their work in each session and input for further work was given.
