Imperium 2012- Management and Cultural Fest
R V Institute of Management hosted a two day Management & Cultural Fest “Imperium 2012” on April 18 & 19, 2012. Imperium 2012 was an attempt to bring together the Adept and the Erudite. It challenged the age-old conventions of management outlook and encouraged an out-of-the-box thought process. The fest got good response from the Business Schools from all over Karnataka. 28 teams representing 18 management institutions participated in the fest. More than 200 students from various institutions participated in different events held during the fest.
InaugurationThe Chief Guest was Sri. Lakshman Sriram, Acclaimed Multi Lingual Karaoke Singer. Sri. Satish Ramaiah, General Manager & Head, Talent Transformation & Knowledge Management Services Division, Wipro Infotech ltd, Bangalore graced the occasion as Guest of Honour. The function was presided by Sri. K S Akhilesh Babu, Trustee, Rashtreeya Sikshana Samithi Trust.
ValedictoryThe Valedictory Function on April 19, 2012 brought down the curtain of the two day event. The Chief Guest for the event was Vidwan Sri. R K Padmanabha, Renowned Music Maestro, Versatile, Vibrant Vocalist. Sri. K G Umesh, Head, Human Resources, The Himalaya Drug Company, Bangalore. The function was presided by Sri. K Lakshman, Trustee, Rashtreeya Sikshana Samithi Trust.
List of Events are as follows:-Management Events:Svasyah - Best CEO: With a perfect blend of role and responsibilities of an organisation’s CEO level tasks and stress management activities, the Best CEO concept was designed with the rounds like aptitude test, waste management, BPR, mock press and stress interview.
Samrodha - Intelligent Investment: This event mainly concentrated on the various areas of Finance and Accounting. The event comprised of 4 rounds of different tests. Round 1 and 2 were mainly focused to test the knowledge and aptitude of the students. While Round 3 and 4(Investment Plan) focused on the analytical skills and rational thinking.
Punaruttana - Re-Innovative Selling: The event mainly concentrated on marketing skills of today’s marketing manager. It comprised five rounds which include quiz, advertising design, product selling and product relaunching.
Samyogam - People Development: The participants were tested on various HR skills by putting them on simulated real life corporate situations. It comprised of 5 activities in the area of job assignment, recruitment, training and successor planning.
Chethasa - Business Plan: This event tested the entrepreneurial skills and creativity in generating business idea. The whole event was conducted in three rounds.
Abhigyan - Business Quiz: B-quiz challenged the knowledge of students about business issues, corporate world and current affairs. There were totally six rounds comprised of 5 preliminary rounds and final.
Cultural Events:The fest had three colourful cultural events –* Ranga Varnika - Mime: The theme of the Mime competition was ‘Social Awareness’* Ninaada – Group Song: The genre was light music for group singing competition* Laasya Thandava - Group Dance: The dance style that the participants were required to portray was Indian contemporary accompanied by Indian instrumental music. The theme specified was “Nature”.

Celebration of 150th Birthday of Swami Vivekananda: The programme was held on January 12, 2012, in the SSMRV College, BBM Auditorium.. Director Dr. T V Raju emphasised the need for the youth to inculcate the values that has been practiced in this country from time immemorial. Celebration of the 177th Birthday of Bhagavan Sri RamaKrishna Paramahamsa: The programme was held on Monday, the March 05, 2012. The Chief Guest was Poojya Mata Vivekamayee of Sri Bhavatarini Ashrama, Vijayanagar. In her address she spoke on the life and teachings of Bhagvan Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. On this auspicious day the Vivekananda Study Centre at RVIM was also inaugurated.Celebration of the 121st Birthday of Dr. B R Ambedkar: The programme was held on Saturday, April 14, 2012. The resource person was Dr. Ashwath Narayana, Professor of History, Bangalore University and he spoke on the life of Dr. Ambedkar.Celebration of Lord BASAVESHWARA Jayanthi: The institute celebrated Basaveshwara Jayanthi on Saturday, May 05, 2012 at BBM Auditorium, SSMRV College. Prof. Siddananda former professor and HOD of Economics at SJRC and present Special Officer, Office of the Registrar (Evaluation) Bangalore University, enlightened the audience with the Life and teachings of Lord BASAVESHWARA. Shankara Jayanthi Celebration: Shankara Jayanthi Celebration was held on Friday, May 04, 2012 at new seminar hall of RVIM. The guest was Prof.B.Mahadevan IIM Bangalore, who in his speech gave lot of anecdotes of Shankara and Gita and how it can be applied to modern management scenarioFaculty Development Programme: A FDP was held on Thursday, May 24, 2012 on “How to get academic research work published". Dr.Srinath Beldona, Associate Dean International College of Business, University of Dallas (USA), was the resourse person for the FDP. Dr.Srinath Beldona gave several tips on how to publish good research paper in international journals.

Department of FinanceGuest lectures conducted: A guest lecture was held for the students of I semester on January 16, 2012 on the topic “International Financial
Reporting Standards”. The resource person was Ms. Bharathy Jayaprakash. In her talk she highlighted IFRS and its importance for the companies.A guest lecture was delivered by Mr. Ali Asghar, Director, Nirantara Community services, Bangalore for the IV semester finance students on April 09, 2012. The topic was “Adding value to the lives of people through Microfinance- Opportunities and Challenges”.A guest lecture was organised for the students of II semester on May 26, 2012 on the topic “Enterprise Risk management” by Dr. S. Jayprakash.
Certificate Course: Certificate course in Contemporary Banking was conducted for the students of I semester, 2011 batch. The syllabus comprised of 10 sessions covered by experienced resource persons from the banking sector. The students also carried out a Project on the study of one of the Bank and its functions. The Certificate examination was conducted on January 23, 2012.Post Graduate Programme: A Post Graduate Programme on “Risk management” was organised for the students of III and IV semester. Eminent resource person from Industry, Academia and Banking sector delivered the information on the areas of risk management.An inter-class competition on ‘Central Budget 2012: A Critical Analysis’ was conducted by the Department on April 30, 2012. A total of six teams participated in the competition.
Department of Human Resource ManagementPG Programme on People Management Skills: Interactive sessions for the certificate course of PG Programme on People Management Skills were organized for IV Semester HR Specialisation students.
Mr Pradeep, Specialist-Talent Strategy, Accenture, Bangalore was invited to discuss about theory and application of Competency Mapping like types of competencies, identification of role competencies, competency assessment, competency development and mapping, on April 02, 2012 and theory and application aspects of Six Sigma on May 19, 2012.Mrs Rujuta, Organisation Development-Manager, Syniverse, Bangalore was invited to discuss about theory and application of Organisation Development like key contributors to OD Field, values in OD and implications of values, assumptions and beliefs in OD on May 12, 2012.

The following students undergone course and completed the course successfully.CSR activity from department of systems management: As a part of Institute’s Social Responsibility, Centre for Information Technology Successfully completed 16th Batch of Computer Literacy Programme for Senior Citizens on March 14, 2012. Around 50 participants aged between 60 years to 85 years received their certificates during the Graduation Day held on March 14, 2012.The next progressive batch commenced on April 14, 2012 with new set of syllabus to meet the present IT challenges for Senior Citizens.

Rural Entrepreneurship Development Programme
R V Institute of Management hosted a one day Rural Entrepreneurship Development Programme “Prerana Sindhu 2012” on May 4, 2012. Prerana Sindhu 2012 was an attempt to bring together the Young MBA minds and the experience and skill of traditional rural entrepreneurs. It challenged the age-old conventions of management outlook and encouraged an out-of-the-box thought process. The EDP got a satisfactory response from the Business Schools across Bangalore. Around 10 teams participated out of which two teams were from R V Institute of Management.
Inauguration: The inaugural ceremony on Friday, May 04, 2012 was attended by distinguished representatives from industry. The Chief Guest was Sri. Devadarshan Vishwanath, Trustee, Rashtreeya Sikshana Samithi Trust. The function was presided by Sri. Sunil Kumar Sarangi, Consultant NEN, Bangalore.
Entrepreneurship Development RoundsRound ONE (GRASP) : Guest lecture by Mr. Karan Kumar of Shruth and Smith Foundation, Bangalore: He enlightened the participants on how to create abundance in the rural areas, on real and basic challenges prevailing among the rural population, which are the critical skills required by the rural entrepreneurs to sustain in market.An online aptitude test was conducted after the session for the participants to test their entrepreneurial skills. The pre-assignment submitted by the participants was evaluated by RVIM faculty members Mr. Gowrish and Mrs. Suma Manjunath. Based on the consolidated score of aptitude test and the pre-assignment points six teams were selected for the second round of the business model competition. The remaining four team participated in the fourth round (group think).There was an icebreaking session in the RVIM conference hall, where the rural entrepreneurs invited by RVIM were introduced to the participants. The rural entrepreneurs who graced this occasion were:Mr. Anjanappa (Organic farming), Mr. Sampangi Ramayya (Carrot Production), Mr. Chintamani (Sheep rearing),Sadananda (Integrated farming), Mr. Nanjunda (Silkworm rearing), Mr. Chennagowda (Integrated farming).
Round TWO (GENERATE) Brainstorming session: In this session the selected 6 teams got an opportunity to sit with the rural entrepreneurs invited by RVIM and understand the challenges and practicality of the business they are conducting. Based on the inputs the teams generated business models for the rural entrepreneurs.Round THREE (GUIDE): Presentation of the business model for rural entrepreneurs In this round the 6 teams had to present to the judges the business model that they had created for the rural entrepreneurs with whom they interacted in the previous round. Various issues such as innovations in terms of technology, infrastructure, transportation, farming, as well as about the investment were discussed some rural entrepreneurs also shared their experiences with rural innovations.Facilitator: Dr. K.S. Naik, Industrailist, BangaloreGRANDEUR (Cultural events) : Rural cultural program was the sweetest end to all the rounds of the entrepreneurship programme. The students presented a medley of folk songs, a social awareness skit and a folk dance, all in traditional rural style. Valedictory-The Valedictory Function on the evening of May 04, 2012 brought down the curtain on the one day event. The Chief Guest for the event was Sri. Ramanuja, Director RUDSETI. The function was presided by Sri. S. M. Balakrishna, Trustee, Rashtreeya Sikshana Samithi Trust.

The Department of Training & Placements
The Training & Placement Department of R V Institute of Management focuses on enhancing the ‘Employability Skills’ of our students. The department has put efforts to make every student of the institution ‘EMPLOYABLE’ or ‘INDUSTRY READ’.All the students enrolled for MBA programme will have to undergo mandatory sessions on Training on a weekly basis to enhance their employability skills apart from regular ongoing guest lectures, seminars and workshops. The areas covered are Business etiquette, Negotiation & Business communication, Mock – Personal interview and group discussion, Customizing resumes, Aptitude test, Employability tests, Presentation skillsIndustrial Visits are very important for every Management student as it provides clear picture of the industry ways and vital information about the organization for their career growth. Management students are taken for such industrial visits in which they interact with the management personnel and staff to brief them about the production techniques and corporate practices.The 4th Semester students were taken to TOYOTA, BHEL, COCA-COLA for industrial visit.The department has placed about 70 students of 2012 batch. The process of campus placement for 2012 batch is still on-going.

Workshop Attended by Faculty Members
A Workshop for faculty members on the topic “Case Study method of teaching” was given by Prof M Rajiv, Consultant, on February 10, 2012. A Brief Guideline was given regarding teaching and training methods like Lecture, Talk, Discussion, Role Play, Case Study, Exercise, Application Project, Sensitivity training etc. by listing the merits and demerits of each method. A checklist was given regarding evaluation of effectiveness of teaching. It was a very interactive session with a lot of illustrations and video clippings. The session was concluded by giving the tips for writing a good case analysis.All the faculty members of RVIM attended a one-day workshop on ‘Quality Improvement Workshop on Research Methodology and Guidance Skills for Management Teachers’ organized by Canara Bank School of Management Studies, Bangalore University on May 06, 2012.
Faculty Development ProgrammeA Faculty Development Programme was organized by Association of Indian Management Schools at Century Club on the topic ‘Management Teacher 2015: New Age Teacher’ on April 20, 2012 at Century Club, Bangalore. The resource persons were Prof N S Ramaswamy, Founder Director-IIMB, Mr Sharu S Rangnekar, Sr Management Consultant, Prof Mohd Masood Ahmed, President AIMS and Principal, Deccan School of Management, Hydrebad, Prof M R Rao, Dean Emeritus, ISB, Hyderabad. Dr T V Raju, Director RVIM, Vice Chairman of Association of Indian Management School, Karnataka and Kerala Chapter summarized the FDP sessions. Ms Suma Manjunath, Ms Sowmya D S, Ms Pavithra S T, Ms Bhavya Vikas, Ms Rashmi Shetty and Ms Divyashree S have attended the Faculty Development Programme.

“Sammilana” - Alumni Meet
The programme was organized in the Quadrangle of RVIM Premises on Saturday, March 17, 2012 and was graced by the presence of 35 alumni members, 40 student volunteers and participants of the current batch, members of staff and the below mentioned dignitaries, Mr. Karan Kumar, Director, Pacecom Technologies, Bangalore, Member, Academic Council - Bangalore University. Mr. G Lakshman, Associate Dean, Mats Institute of Management and Entrepreneurship, Bangalore.Dr. T V Raju, Director, R V I M. The programme commenced with Ms. Priyadarshini, Student, II Semester MBA, invoking the blessings of the Almighty with an invocation song. Dr. T V Raju, Director, RVIM welcomed the gathering in a very warm and affectionate manner, nostalgically recollecting memories of days and years gone by. Two of the senior alumni members, Ms. Divya Mohan and Mr. Tilak addressed the audience and shared their experiences of college and professional life, both.The invitees, Mr. Karan Kumar and Mr. G Lakshman, in their respective addresses, motivated the gathering to think beyond being job seekers and encouraged them instead, to become job providers. A stirring performance by the Students of IV Semester MBA in presenting a medley of old and new melodies to the accompaniment of a guitar served to be the cultural dimension of the programme. Vote of Thanks was proposed by Mr Srivatsa Vivek Vaidya, Student, II Semester MBA, to mark the closure of the programme. The Dignitaries, Alumni members, Staff and Students proceeded to Dinner amidst a sense of good cheer and joy.
