GITAM DISTINCTIONS

Tenth Convocation of GITAM Bengaluru was held on02 November 2019. Prof. S.N.Hegde, FormerVice-Chancellor, University of Mysore participated asChief Guest and delivered the convocation address.

Prof. Hegde emphasized on quality of education andresearch along with wisdom and enlightenment. Hemotivated the young graduates by advising them tocreate a niche for themselves and build a career withconcerted efforts for ensuring good life and living. Headded that cultivation of fruitful life and career is a slowprocess and entails a long journey.

Prof. Hegde appreciated that universities like GITAMin private sector have been playing a pivotal role notonly in improving access but also in providing qualityhigher and professional education. He said that acombination of enlightened leadership from themanagement side and scholarship from the faculty andstudent front is required. As life begets life, meritocracygives rise to intellect. Sustenance of quality is aperennial endeavor and there is no cessation of growthto an institution.

He felt that high investment on higher education yieldsrich dividends individually as well as nationally. Prof.Hegde concluded that if students are enlightened andempowered, our nation will be robust and vibrant.

Guest of Honour, Sri. P. Kunnikrishnan, Director, URRao Satellite Centre (URSC) was conferred Doctor ofScience. About 150 students attended the convocationalong with their parents and well wishers. BestResearcher awards were presented to Prof. K. Srinivas,Principal, School of Science and Dr. B.Venkateswarlu,Dept. of Mathematics.

Tenth Convocation of GITAM Visakhapatnam was heldon 09 November 2019. Prof. Anil D. Sahasrabudhe,Chairman, AICTE, participated as Chief Guest anddelivered the convocation address. He mentioned thatuniversities need to concentrate on faculty developmentprograms right from the time of their induction andduring their service. Institutes can explore variousavenues available including experiential learning forstudents, participation in Unnat Bharat Abhiyan,conducting research academies and innovationworkshops, he added. He advised the universities tofocus more on interdisciplinary industry relevantresearch projects. He observed that theinterdependence of one discipline of engineering onthe other is more relevant today than at any other time.

Prof. K. Ramakrishna Rao, Chancellor, GITAM, saidthat social harmony is an essential ingredient in peacekeeping and any divisive, discriminatory andexclusionary practices inherent in a system are potentialpeace breakers. He mentioned that the younggenerations must follow the footsteps of MahatmaGandhi to help the humankind. Prof.K.Siva RamaKrishna, Vice-Chancellor, GITAM presented the annualreport and mentioned that the university is growingglobally, as envisioned in the university’s 2025 visiondocument.

Bhujanga Rao, ISRO Chair Professor, NIAS,Bengaluru and Dr. S V Adinarayana Rao, DirectorGeneral, Prema Hospital. 78 research scholarsreceived their Ph.D degrees and 2000 graduates fromengineering, science, pharmacy, management,architecture, law, social sciences received theirdegrees during the convocation. Tenth Convocation of GITAM Hyderabad was held on15 November 2019. Dr. B.N. Suresh, Chancellor, IIST,Thiruvananthapuram and Distinguished Scientist,ISRO, participated as Chief Guest and delivered theconvocation address. He observed that positiveeducation is the catalyst to learn newer and newerthings which in turn helps us to gain self-confidenceand self-respect.

He said that in spite of the denial of technologies fromthe advanced countries during the development phaseof our systems in 70s and 80s, our young engineerswho joined ISRO then marshalled their own innovation

skills to design and develop world class systems. Whilebriefing about the space technologies, he said that toachieve success in space, one must learn the art ofvisualizing the invisible. In other words, one shouldimagine all possibilities of failures and provide the rightsolution in both design and implementation. We shoulduse failures to learn great lessons which one wouldnot be able to learn otherwise. He advised thegraduates to choose a destiny close to their heart whichwill aid to change India.

19 research scholars received their Ph.D degrees.72 MBA, 13 M.Tech. and 720 graduates fromengineering and science received their degrees. Theuniversity also presented gold medals to bestresearchers and meritorious students.

MoUs

Green GITAMGITAM Deemed to be University has been ranked seventhtop varsity in India and 366th worldwide in University ofIndonesia (UI) Green Metric World University Rankingsthis year .

The criteria taken into consideration include the size of theuniversity, spatially and in terms of student and facultystrength, location of the university, space earmarked forgreenery, energy use, transport, water use and recyclingand waste treatment. The Green Metric World Universityrankings is a uniform system that gives credit to theuniversities around the world in a bid to reduce their carbonfootprint and help combat climate change.

GITAM Deemed to be University signed MoU with one ofRussia’s reputed research and educational centres UralFederal University (Ranked 376 in QS World Universities)here on 18 December 2019. The MoU facilitates MBAstudents of Ural Federal University to study at GITAM forone semester from this academic year. Prof. AlexanderYashin, Director, Graduate School of Economics andManagement expressed satisfaction with the academic andresidential facilities offered at GITAM.

The MoU will help Russian students to get great learningopportunities by experiencing areas of innovation in Fintechand BioMedical. In addition, the MoU will help both theuniversities to develop graduate and undergraduateprogrammes of common interest, faculty collaboration forresearch assignments, student collaboration for advancedstudies and transfer of academic credits.

GITAM entered into MoU with Bio Valley Incubation Council,Visakhapatnam on 23 December 2019 to organize executivecourse on nutrition and seminar in June 2020.

Centre for Learning & Sustainability

Workshop on ‘R’ for Data Analytics: Workshop on ‘R’for Data Analytics was conducted by the Department ofOperations, GIM, in association with CLS on 12 October2019, facilitated by Dr. M. Kamakshaiah.

MSN in Clinical Research : MSN in Clinical Researchwas conducted by Dr. K R R Gandhi, Professor in DataScience, GIM, organised by CLS in association with GIMSR,on 27 November 2019 and 5 December 2019.

Workshop on Research Methodology : Workshop onResearch Methodology, Phase-II was conducted by CLS forthe newly joined research scholars of GIT from 10-11December 2019. The basic objective of the programme is toprovide guidance and support to complete course work aspart of the requirement of the research programme.

Practical Approach to Effective Teaching andProductive Research in Applied Sciences : Theprogramme was organised in association with Departmentof Physics and Electronics, GIS from 11-12 December 2019.Prof. A. Subrahmanyam from IIT Madras was the ResourcePerson.

Workshop on Data Visualization using Tableau : Theworkshop was conducted by CLS in association withDepartment of Computer Sceince, GIS on 31 December2019. Dr. K R R Gandhi, Professor in Data Science, GIMfacilitated the workshop.

GITAM Team visit GVMC, VisakhapatnamGITAM team, led by Prof. K. Siva Rama Krishna,Vice-Chancellor, visited GVMC’s City Operations Center on26 November 2019. Sri. Bharath Reddy, L&T and Sri. HariB, Fluentgrid gave powerpoint presentations, highlightingthe components of Visakhapatnam Smart City program andthe role of City Operations Center and its core functionslike operations monitoring, planning, incident managementand emergency & disaster management.

The components and functions of Smart Poles - telecomantennas, LED lights, wi-fi spots, surveillance cameras,advertisement boards, public address system,environmental sensors and emergency callboxes - waselaborated. The presentation also highlighted smarttechnologies used in the transportation sector such as realtime tracking, red light violation detection, automatic numberplate recognition system, variable message display boardsetc. Several e-governance modules were explained duringthe presentation.

Fluentgrid provided integrated command control andcommunication (ICCC) solutions for GVMC City OperationsCenter. Fluentgrid deployed its Actilligence urban platform
