Welcome aboard our Age Unlimited “Marvelous Mediterranean Cruise” Valentine Day “Love Boat”! Use your imagination and think of a cool summer breeze; sunshine shimmering on azure blue spark-ing waters, relax and enjoy our journey. Age Unlimited, the Seniors’ Ministry of Banwell, will meet on February 14
th, 2018 at 11 a.m. in the
Chapel Room. Henry Nurse is our coordinator and welcomes each to the meeting. Rev. Dr. Alex Moir is our spiritual advisor and opens our meetings with a prayer. We sing our favourite hymns and have a devotional thought prior to our special guest presenter. Kim Anber has been a tireless worker for the Lord and has a vibrant personality. Jim Wheeler and Kim are the team leaders of the ushers and greeters at Banwell. After formation of this group, Kim hosted a magnificent get acquainted dinner at his home. Kim was born in Windsor. His parents were Ed and Pam Anber. He attended Benson Elementary school; Forester Collegiate and is a graduate of St. Clair College as a P.S.W. He worked this capacity and then became a truck driver who retired in 2016. Kim is now Chair of Banwell Property Committee. Kim and Christine have been married for 22 years and decided to enjoy a M.M.C. This “Marvelous Mediterranean Cruise” began as a sightseeing tour in Barcelona, Spain. They boarded the “Love Boat” and embarked south in the Atlantic Ocean, through the streets of Gibraltar and then to magical cities along the North shore of the beautiful Mediterranean Sea. It was an amazing adventure to each Port-of-call. Come and enjoy this enchanting adventure with our tour guide Kim Anber. Claude Daniels asks God’s blessing of grace for our delicious, nutritious luncheon which is prepared by our hospitality hostesses: Team leader is Yvonne Eberle, and she is assisted by Penny Bain, Madelon Kidd, Dorothy Allan, Pam Beemer and Carol Middaugh. We invite you to make a freewill donation to cover the cost. A sign-up sheet will be on the coffee counter until February 11

As we pass the midpoint of the winter season, we look forward to warm experiences of worship
here in the Banwell sanctuary. During the month, the pastor will conclude his series on Epiphany,
celebrating the gift of the good news for all people. We will also enjoy a couple of guest speakers
as the pastor will be on vacation for a couple of Sundays in February. As always, we are thankful
for our musicians, under the leadership of Ian McGregor Smith. May the Lord continue to bless us
as we gather together for worship.

You are Loved
There comes a time In your life and mine
When tears fall unheeded Until we look up...seeing
Another cross on this lonely hill. What a dear friend we have in JESUS, Who bears all our pain in HIS HEART,
Who catches us up in HIS STRONG ARMS
And whispers to our hearts… YOU ARE LOVED… YOU ARE LOVED.

BEST WISHES IN THE NEW
YEAR!
POINSETTIAS It came as a shock to me this year when a week before the Poinsettias were to be delivered to the church, I received news that my order could not be filled. I was told that the growers in Essex County were now growing a more lucrative plant than Poinsettias. I had to scramble to find a new distributor that could fill my order with such short notice and at a cost of $15 per plant. After several phone calls, I was relieved to find a distributor and was promised the last 40 plants they had. We were however charged tax and delivery on top of that. I was informed that the cost will probably be higher next year due supply and demand. I have discussed this with the Pastoral Care and Worship Committee and have decided that we will not be ordering Poinsettias in bulk next Christmas. We will be discussing other ways to remember or honour a loved one.
Thank you to each of you for beautifying the church this Christmas with your purchase of a Poinsettia. “Bloom where you are planted” Donna Soper Decorating Committee

UPDATE FROM MARLEE AND DAVE PAGE ON THEIR MISSION TRIP Mulibuti! Mulibuti is the first word that Marlee and I would learn on our arrival in Africa. It means hello. On December 5
th, 2017, Marlee and I left Toronto airport for the 26 hr. flight to Zambia. We were
travelling to the town of Monze where we would spend 5 days on 2 separate mission projects. The country of Zambia is in South Central Africa, as I tell people, “its 2 countries directly above South Af-rica”. Our journey would take us through Ethiopia, Zimbabwe and ultimately we would land in the Zambian capital of Lusaka before heading out on the 3 hour drive further south to Monze. Monze is a town of approx. 10 000 people. It is home to the Golden Pillow Lodge, which was to act as our base of operations for the next 5 days. As I mentioned earlier, our purpose in Zambia was twofold. Our first purpose was to continue the work of an already existing project, One Seed, where we partnered with local farmers to help im-prove their farming practices. December marks the beginning of the rainy season (3 months long) and it was important that they get their maize-corn crop in the ground in a timely fashion. Our work consisted of teaching and advising them on fertility and planting practices. The climate and ground conditions in this area of Zambia are only marginally appropriate for concentrated agricultural pur-poses. Rain is everything and once it stops in February (and it will stop for the next 9 months) the crop needs to be established and growing. As I write this, the early rains have been very hit and miss and so the crop has been off to a very slow start. It would be appropriate to add these people to your daily prayer routine, as they seem to be facing a troublesome start to their agricultural year.
The second purpose for our trip to Monze was to investigate the pos-sibility of a partnership between Banwell Community Church and the Crown Ministry’s organization. Crown Ministries is a locally run church with 3 campuses. Their primary focus is on providing wor-ship, teaching and discipleship opportunities for people in and around the villages surrounding Monze. The ministry is founded and led by the Monze family (coincidental that the name of the town is the same) and Pastor Donald Mangani. George Monze and his late wife Deborah founded Crown Ministries 25 years ago as an outreach program to help local young people to gain opportunities in educa-tion and to provide for their basic existence. Over those 25 years, Crown Ministries grew to open a school for deaf children, 4 separate Church campuses and multiple services to help local people come to know Jesus Christ. During an earlier trip, I had met George and be-gan to explore with him his vision for the future of Crown Ministries and how our church family may be able to come alongside them in their journey. George’s answer was both simple and familiar.
“David, what can your family do to help us bring more people to know Jesus?
It’s the most important thing!” George and I would spend time exploring this in more detail and I came to understand that there would be 3 specific areas that we could consider partnering with them in: 1. Equipping – with there primary mission being outreach and discipleship, they are very under
equipped with resources to help them in teaching and discipling their adult and child members. Basic materials to help them teach the gospel, music materials and Bibles are the primary way we can help in this area.
UPDATE FROM MARLEE AND DAVE PAGE ON THEIR MISSION TRIP (Cont’d)
2. Teaching/Discipleship – their requirements here are two fold: A. Leadership – they are seeking both materials and instruction in the areas of leader-
ship. Their ministry has begun to grow faster than they are equipped to handle. Sim-ple leadership frameworks and instruction for their church is something they are very interested in. Pastor Donald and George are very interested in equipping their mem-bers to outreach into the villages around Monze to bring these families to know Jesus.
B. Pastoral - The leadership of the Church have very little in the way of Pastoral and the-
ological resources. Materials that assist Pastor George and Pastor Donald in studying and preparing for their duties are in high demand.
C. Capital projects – Crown Ministries is at the very beginnings of a building project that
will see them construct their second permanent facility. A church and outreach centre in the village of Kaumba. They currently own 16 HA of land and have a church of 100 people worshiping out of a mud structure (yes, it’s actually made of mud!!). While this is an important project for the ministry, they are first and foremost focused on the equipping and pastoring to their current members and reaching new people in their area.
Currently, the Mission and Outreach Committee is developing a ministry plan, to be considered by the congregation, to facilitate an appropriate response as to how Banwell Community Church can best participate in this exciting opportunity.
Marlee and I have much more to share with you and plan to do so on March 11
th and 18
th – Pastor
Alex will be away for these 2 weeks and so we will be delivering the messages for these weeks. We believe this is an excellent opportunity to provide you, our family; with much more detailed infor-mation about our experience, the opportunity that exists and a response that we might consider. In the meantime, we are happy to talk with any of you that would like to learn more!! Stay tuned for some exciting things to come!! Blessings, Dave and Marlee Page.
PROPERTY MANAGEMENT
Our investigation by Bartlett Restoration under the supervision of ChallEng Engineering was
completed this year. The outcome- $250,000 in repairs were needed. Tenders went out and
Bartlett got the Job. They have done a lot of this kind of work in southern Ont. and have a good
reputation. The work started early in Nov, 2017 and as of Jan. 9, 2018 the work is ongoing due
to weather delays.
Early Nov. 2017 also saw the wind damaged roof replaced, except for a small section out back
that will be finished after the wall restoration is done. This was covered by insurance.
When the exterior is finished the insurance company will pay for part of the repairs in the
building and the rest will go out for tender. We are also aware that the hallway needs patching
and painting, and will be done by volunteers.
Another stain glass window is buckling due to trapped heat. By springtime the specialist will
come in and quote us for this repair.
The fireplace in the lounge has been working well, and more lights are being replaced with
LED.
For the second year now we are pleased with the work that our landscaping and snow removal
company is doing and have continued their contract.
By now you have noticed that the exterior doors are more difficult to open due to reinsulating
them. Extra attention is needed to make sure they are fully closed and locked.
Thanks to our many volunteers inside and outside who have helped us with small jobs saving
us money.
And thanks to our custodian Chantelle Bell for the conscientious work she does, and for keeping
us apprised of everything that needs attention.

We turned the corner into 2018 with a stretch of cold winter weather, the likes we haven’t seen in a while. Temperatures have been colder of course … I remember the winter of 2014 when it was so frigid we lost a couple of Atlas Cedars in our backyard. But I was happy about this cold snap, partic-ularly since it came at Christmas and ensured we would have snow on the ground. But it was spe-cial for another reason. For the first time ever, we had Linda’s sister Diane and her husband Mike (as well as their Springer Spaniel Mason) spend Christmas with us. They hail from the western part of Tennessee (near Memphis) and don’t really experience much winter weather. So when the skies opened on Christ-mas Eve, dumping significant snowfall on our region and making Christmas day look like a winter wonderland, I was happy about that. I wanted to give them a true Canadian Christmas ... and our weather came through! Of course a real Christmas has more to it than just seasonal weather, and we as believers know that very well. What a privilege it was to be in worship with our Banwell family during Advent, which is what we call the four Sundays leading up to Christmas. Once again, Donna Soper and her helpers did a bang up job of decorating our building. Thanks to our Minister of Music Ian Smith and the Banwell Singers for the presentation of the musical “It All Began in Bethlehem” which gave us all a very special presentation amongst the rest of the wonderful Advent music. And finally Christmas Eve provided a fitting conclusion to our celebration. I am very thankful to our musicians who provid-ed special music for that evening. Our celebration throughout the month helped to remind us of the real “reason for the season”. Advent and Christmas are wonderful reminders of the spiritual component to life. It is during this time of year, as well as Easter, that we are reminded of this truth ... that life isn’t all about making a living but making a life. Many centuries ago, one of our greatest theologians, St. Augustine, wrote the words “Our hearts are restless ‘til they find their rest in thee.” In spite of attempts by the media to remove any spiritual component from the Christmas season, folks still seem drawn to the wonder of the event and the possibility that the meaning of Christmas may have an impact on their lives. How blessed we are as a congregation to participate in this. As well as experiencing the white Christmas, Mike and Diane were in church with us on Sunday morning December 24
th as well as for the Christmas Eve service. It’s not always possible for our
house guests to be with us for such a period of time that it includes worship ... but I always think that to get the complete “Moir visit” it has to include church. It’s what Linda and I have given forty years of our lives to ... and what a privilege it has been to do so. Devotedly your pastor ... Alex
