Greetings!

Here it is time (Already!) for the 2010 National Exhibition! Where did the time go?

It seems as we grow as artists, painting becomes somewhat eas-ier because we have learned about how the paint behaves under

various conditions and on what surfaces our techniques appeal to us the most. As painting becomes easier, we answer to interruptions and distractions which come between our painting sessions and time seems to move faster and faster.

We, as painters, must pay close attention to the slippage of time. Deadlines come and go, workshops appear and disappear and show entries are met or missed. Frankly, I believe there is more to being a painter than going to workshops and entering shows. The true artist is always in a chase to become better and develop greater understanding. . . .no matter how skilled he or she already is. There is always a better vision waiting to show itself in paint. There are always break-throughs to be made.

NWS, exists NOT to reward the usual and commonplace. Signature membership and generous prize purses incent and encourage uniqueness and quality. Our na-tional exhibition is in place to encourage artists to reach beyond their comfort zones and stretch for the new, the creative and the untried. We want you, as painters, to un-derstand more and, in that understanding, to probe deeper into yourselves for more personal and extraordinary accomplishments. We exist to encourage and stimulate artists to become the best they can be. In short, we sponsor artistic growth.

The point about time slipping away is this: These shows seem to be closer and closer together with less painting time in between. Many of us ( including me) let time slip away and thus miss the necessary repetition of practice and trials and er-rors of painting in order to achieve that all important growth. We can read about it or watch others do it, but there is no substitute for pure repeated effort and making mistakes which help us understand more about ourselves and our art.

Think about it. Maybe you didn’t enter the 2010 exhibition . . .or, perhaps you did. Right now, this minute, make a promise to set aside time to study and paint.

Set goals and put your best efforts to work to make the new and the fresh. Wel-come failures or mistakes . . .they teach us! Paint to experiment. Paint to try the untried. Paint to see what will happen if (fill in blank). Paint! Paint! Paint!

Here’s to making your breakthroughs!

Sincerely,M.E. “Mike” Bailey, President

T his is a banner year for the National Watercolor Soci-ety. What better way to celebrate our 90th Anniversary than having our Annual Exhibition in our very own building at 915 South Pacific Ave., San Pedro, CA. For the past several years, NWS has been making improve-ments in the building. This year with a new front fa-çade being installed, a decision was made to hold the 90th Anniversary Annual Exhibition at the National Watercolor Society Gallery. The opening reception will take place on Saturday, October 30, 2010 at 4:00 pm. The event will be marked with a ribbon cutting cer-emony, a special showing of past presidents’ paintings to honor these leaders, and a gala reception.

The 90th Annual Exhibition will run October 31 through December 11. The gallery is open Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. The 90th Annual Awards Luncheon will take place at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, San Pedro, on Saturday, Oc-tober 30 at 12:30 pm. The exhibiting artists, award

winners and new NWS Signature Members will be honored at the luncheon. All past presidents will be presented with a special award to mark the 90th An-niversary of the National Watercolor Society. This will be an exciting event for all NWS members and their friends as they mark ninety years of NWS history.

In conjunction with the 90th Annual Exhibition, three demonstrations and two workshops will take place. Demonstrating will be John Salminen on Sunday, Oc-tober 31, Karen Frey on Sunday, November 7 and Ron Ranson on Sunday, November 14.

John Salminen will present a workshop October 25-29 and Ron Ranson’s workshop will be November 15 -19. These demonstrations and workshops will provide great opportunities for watercolor artists to expand their knowledge and expertise. For further informa-tion please visit the NWS website: www.nationalwa-tercolorsociety.org. Information and registration form are available on pages 8-9 of this newsletter.

In 1940, under president Phil Paradise’s guidance, the Cali-fornia Watercolor Society (early name of NWS) installed an exhibition numbering 202 pieces at New York’s River-side Museum. The Metropolitan Museum of art purchased nine of the paintings for their collection.

The NWS All Member Show has only one Juror/judge who must not be a NWS member. The Open NWS Exhibit held in the Fall has 3 Jurors of Selection who must be Signature members and 1 Juror of Awards who must not be a NWS member.

The NWS Newsletter is written to in-form and educate its members. We want to keep you up to date on news concerning the NWS as well as infor-mation of interest to watermedia art-ists. If you have articles that you feel would be of interest or educational to the membership, please feel free to email them to Newsletter Editor, Chris Krupinski: [email protected]. Please note that we are not looking for workshop announcements or show openings, but rather information that would be of in-terest to the society as a whole.

T he results of 87 artists’ dreams were installed in the National Watercolor Society gallery from May 2-29 for the All Member Show. The Juror for the NWS Member Exhibit, Mary Addison Hackett, selected a varied—perhaps a more colorful group—this year of water-media. There were figures, landscapes, non-objectives and flowers all aglow on these walls. Many states were represented with 32 paintings from California; 6 each from Florida and Washington; 5 from Arizona; 4 from Pennsylvania; 3 each from Colorado, Maine, and Or-egon; two each from Canada, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Texas, and Virginia; 1 each from Alabama, Connecticut, Illinois, Maine, Montana, Ne-vada, New Jersey, South Carolina, and Wisconsin. The exhibit was beautiful. The NWS gallery space is truly elegant and sophisticated with no outdoor light invad-ing the room.

We all love receptions, and this one was ‘one for the books.’ There were well over 200 people, all interested in examining each exciting watercolor painting. Many toasts were quaffed in celebration. Jim Brower who is now 96 years of age came all the way from Ohio. Several artists made long trips including, Cheryl Devoto from Texas who entered her painting, “Whale Watching.”

The awards were given to eight artists: $1,000 each to Mary Backer and Paul Sullivan; $500 each to Ellery Akers, Diane Geoghegan, Laura Kemp, Irving Mor-gan, Leigh Murphy, and Ronald Pattern. The Society

names these awards after past NWS presidents. It is good to remember those who guided the organization in years past; just so we don’t forget—Sueo Serisawa, Richard Haines, George Gibson, David Scott, Wat-son Cross Jr., Edgar Ewing, Leonard Edmondson and Howard Clapp.
