WAYMAN GOOD HOPE

“If you have ears, listen to what the

Spirit says to the Church.” (Rev 3:22-CEV)

We thank God for the blessings of a

New Year! …And for allowing us to wit-

ness the possibilities, promises, and oppor-

tunities for 2016! Moreover, we thank

God for the gift of new life which comes

with the birth of Jesus and the promise of

reconciliation with God and with neighbor.

Not only does January find us still cele-

brating the birth of Jesus, we also acknowl-

edge the Baptism of Jesus, and the signifi-

cance of this introductory statement of

faith in God through Jesus Christ our Lord!

As we begin the year 2016, the vast

numbers of unprecedented events that have

characterized these past 12 months of 2015

should serve as a clarion call to all Believ-

ers—unusually devastating natural disas-

ters; worldwide political upheavals and

terrorist attacks; wars and rumors of wars;

pestilence and disease; mass murders of

black men and the constant need for re-

minders that Black lives matter; and, the

evil use of social media to transmit mes-

sages of hate which have led to destructive

behaviors by unbalanced people.

What is even more disturbing is the pro-

liferation of evil in our world and in our

communities, the “haves” fighting against

the “have-nots,” racism,

and sexism. America

has become a nation

where evil is parading

itself in the deceptive

disguises of police uni-

forms and beautiful de-

signer clothes—a soci-

ety where politicians

and community leaders

make appeals to idealistic motives while at

the same time exploiting traditional resent-

ments and prejudices, thereby giving legiti-

macy to unholy and unrighteous activities.

If we read our Bibles, especially the

Book of Revelation, we hear the warnings

about the evil that does not seek to win us

by intimidation, but by fascination—evil

which does not seek to be feared, but

rather to be worshipped and followed with

wonder and awe. Moreover, we hear the

clarion call that Christians are to be a wit-

nessing voice as God’s community here on

earth. We are to be God’s ambassadors

who are engaged in the reconciling minis-

try of Jesus Christ. In II Corinthians 5:18,

we are reminded that “God was in Christ

reconciling the world to Himself.” Hence,

our ambassadorship calls us to witness to (Continued on page 2)

MISSIONARY SOCIETY OUTREACH

On December 14th, the Missionaries delivered clothes, toys, hats, gloves, scarves,

coats and blankets to the Lighthouse Shelter in Annapolis and the Arundel Hope House

in Glen Burnie. They also delivered can goods to the Asbury Church Assistance Net-

work (ACAN) in Severna Park. As part of the

Angel Tree Prison Ministry program, they deliv-

ered dolls, books and games to a six year old girl

in Pasadena whose parent is incarcerated.

The Young People’s Department (YPD) also has

an ongoing drive to collect winter coats, hats,

gloves and scarves to give to the homeless. We

praise God for the generosity of our members

during the Christmas season and throughout the

year. See more pictures on page 6 Sis. Linda Johnson, Missionary Society President (Left)

THE PASTOR’S WORD (CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1)

the world the Good News of Jesus Christ. But, more

importantly, we are to hear for ourselves and obey

God’s “marching orders” for all who know and be-

lieve in the Truth of Jesus Christ!

As we begin this new year, let us hear the message

to Believers recorded in the Letters to the Churches in

The Book of Revelation 2:1-3:22. We are called to be

faithful; to be steadfast; to shun false doctrines; to re-

sist idolatry and evil ways; and to be alive and “on

fire’ for the Lord. We are called to not grow weary in

well-doing; and to have fervent love for God our

Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer!

Moreover, these Letters warn us about what we

shall lose if we do not overcome those forces of evil

that would draw us away from God. But, more impor-

tantly, each Letter carries a promise of what will be

gained: it is an open door to eternal life if we remain

faithful to the end! In other words, in each Letter there

is a warning, and then a reminder that we are to pay

attention to God and listen to God’s directives for

abundant living. And the words are echoed in Revela-

tion 3:22:

“If you have ears, listen to what the

Spirit says to the Church.” (CEV)

Therefore, as we begin 2016, let us hear God anew.

Let us keep our eyes focused on Jesus as we continue

in our celebration of Christmastide and begin the sea-

son of Epiphany—the Baptism of our Lord. Clearly,

“Baptism” is a time of new beginnings, new awaken-

ings, and new understandings. In this new year, let us

not be overwhelmed or intoxicated, or fearful of the

evil and the unusual around us. Let us remember that

God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and

a sound mind.

In this new year, let us be bold for the Lord! And

committed to the faith! As we hear God at the Bap-

tism of Jesus saying, “This is my beloved Son, in

whom I am well pleased,” let us pray that God’s re-

sponse to us and about us will be the same as we con-

stantly seek the praise of God rather than the praise of

men and women. Let us live our lives to hear God

say about us, “This is my beloved son/this is my be-

loved daughter, in whom I am well pleased!”

God’s Word challenges us in this new year. It is

not so much about resolution, but it is about asking

and answering the questions. How will I need to live

this year in order to make a difference in God’s

world? What must I do this year to make my living

more pleasing to God? What will I need to change in

my life, if I am truly living for the praise of God?

Beloved, as we begin this new year, our prayer is

that God will lift us to higher ground, and to God’s

more excellent way. And, as we are empowered by

the Holy Spirit to love and to serve in this new year

and through all the years that God gives us, let us con-

tinue to “…run with patience the race that is set be-

fore us, always looking to Jesus the author and fin-

isher of our faith.

Love, Joy, and Peace,

Scriptural Thought for the Conference Year 2015-2016

The one who is taught the word is to share all good things with the one who teaches him. Do not be deceived,

God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh

will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal

life. Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary. So then, while

we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, and especially to those who are of the household of the

FLU VACCINE MYTHS: WHAT’S TRUE, WHAT’S NOT FLU season is here, just in time for the holiday season. But there’s an easy fix for the muscle aches, high fe-

vers, sore throats, stuffy noses and headaches the flu causes: it’s the flu shot. While the shot has been

around for many years, some people still don’t take advantage of it and suffer nasty flu symptoms. There’s no

question the flu shot is the best defense against the flu, but there’s a lot of confusing information out there.

Here are five common myths about the flu vaccine explained:

Myth #1: The flu shot gives you the flu.

• You can’t get the flu from the flu shot. But it takes about two weeks for the shot to start working in your

body, so you may still catch the flu after you have the shot.

• While most people feel fine after the shot, some may develop a mild fever or feel tired for a day or two.

After you receive the shot, your body works to protect you against the virus, which can make you feel tired.

Myth #2: The flu shot doesn’t work.

• Is it still possible to get the flu after you get the flu shot? Yes. Is it much less likely to happen? Yes.

• The flu shot is not 100 percent effective, but it does greatly lower your risk of getting the flu.

• There are many different types of the flu virus. The shot doesn’t protect you against all of them. Each year,

the World Health Organization identifies three or four types to include in the flu shot. These are the types

most likely to be spread for that year’s flu season.

Myth #3: You don’t need the flu shot if you had it last year.

• Because the flu virus changes, your body needs the vaccine each year to protect you against each year’s

most common flu type.

Myth #4: If you’re a healthy, young adult, you don’t need the flu shot.

• The flu is most life-threatening for people age 50 and older, pregnant women, children under age 5 and

people with a chronic medical condition.

• However, healthy adults can still become very sick, hospitalized or even die. Each year in the U.S., more

than 200,000 people are hospitalized and about 36,000 people die from the flu.

Myth #5: If you wash your hands, eat healthy and get lots of sleep, you can prevent the flu.

• These are all important and improve your overall health, but they can’t stop the flu. Germs in the air cause

the flu, which means when a sick person coughs or sneezes, those germs in the air can make you sick.

Each year, five to 20 percent of people in the U.S. get the flu. If you want to increase your chance of staying healthy this winter, the flu shot is an easy step to take. Minor discomfort from the shot is much better than a serious illness and the effects that can follow. Getting vaccinated will not only help keep you healthy, but pre-vent you from getting others sick as well.

News from the Women’s Fellowship

In December we sponsored our annual Christmas caroling visits to our sick and shut in members. We visited

Sis. Met Jackson at Future Care in Arnold, Sis. Shirley White at Heritage Harbor in Annapolis, and Sis. Lil-

lie Henson at her home in Glen Burnie. We were going to visit residents at Genesis Care Home in Severna

Park, but they were not allowing groups in due to a sickness outbreak in the center. Following the caroling,

we enjoyed a fellowship at McDonalds. It is a joy to see the happiness on residents’ faces as we stroll the

halls singing. At Heritage Harbor, the residents called us for an encore! We thank all the members and

friends who accompanied us and give a special thanks to Bro. Teddy White, our bus driver.

Early Start to Women’s Day

Women’s Day is in March each year but the women of Wayman are off to an early start! They sold variety

dinners on Friday, December 4th. Putting on dinners is a lot of hard work but Wayman has a reputation of

having the best dinners in the County. A big thank you to everyone who helped.

These are just a fraction of the many volunteers who make dinner sales possible. Thank you to Linda Johnson

for taking pictures.

1. Wake Up !! Decide to have a good day.

"Today is the day the Lord hath made; let us rejoice and be glad in it." Psalms 118:24

2. Dress Up !!

The best way to dress up is to put on a smile. A smile is an inexpensive way to improve your looks.

"The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at outward appearance;

but the Lord looks at the heart." I Samuel 16:7

3. Shut Up!!

Say nice things and learn to listen. God gave us two ears and one mouth, so He must have meant for us

to do twice as much listening as talking. "He who guards his lips guards his soul."

Proverbs 13:3

4. Stand Up !!

For what you believe in. Stand for something or you will fall for anything.

"Let us not be weary in doing good; for at the proper time, we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good..." Galatians 6:9-10

5. Look Up !!

To the Lord.

"I can do everything through Christ who strengthens me." Philippians 4:13

6. Reach Up !!

For something higher.

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not unto your own understanding. In all your ways, ac-

knowledge Him and He will direct your path." Proverbs 3:5-6

7. Lift Up !!

Your Prayers.

"Do not worry about anything; instead PRAY ABOUT EVERYTHING." Philippians 4:6
