NEWS ON THE HILL OCTOBER 2017 Vision: To have transformed lives that reflect the values of the kingdom of God. THE POWER AND SIGNIFICANCE OF PRAISE In Acts 16, Paul and Silas were beaten, taken through a form of brokenness, and placed in the inner prison. At midnight, they began to pray and sing praises to God, and the prisoners HEARD them. Then suddenly there was an earthquake, it shook the foundation of the prison and opened the doors of the prison. When the keeper of the prison realized that the doors were opened, he reached to kill himself, but Paul cried out to him to not hurt himself, because he and all the prisoners were still there. Then the keeper fell before Paul saying, “What must I do to be saved?” I reiterated this text because it is so prophetic, especially in this season with disaster after disaster and misplaced families. It is during a season like this that God begins to shake up things, and readjust our situations and circumstances. He moves us to a state of brokenness, and as we pray and praise Him, he breaks down the very things that are holding us captive. Every situation we have gone through was and is designed to bring others to Christ. It was designed so that those who are going through the same or similar struggles can see how we operate in that situation. The emphasis in the text isn’t the earthquake and the foundation shaking, though that is what will happen to those things that try to hold us captive. It isn’t the fact that the doors were opened to allow an escape from the place of torment and bondage, though this is what we want. It is not even the fact that the keeper awakened and took his weapon to kill himself, the very same weapon that he could have and would have used to kill those he had imprisoned. The keeper took Paul and Silas out and then asked, “What must I do to be saved?” THIS was the purpose of this text — TO BRING SALVATION! They were there to bring the light of Jesus Christ into a dark, barren, destitute place of bondage, a place where there seemed to be no hope. This event was orchestrated by God to save not just the keeper, but all of those who HEARD. So instead of complaining about our hardships, let’s thank God for bringing significance to our struggles. We should ask God for strength to stay in the struggle unl He has done what needs to be done in and through us. May we be prepared to be used by God to bring others to Christ when they come asking, “What must I do to be saved!” In His Service, Dr. Terry L. NEWS ON THE HILL OCTOBER 2017

Vision: To have transformed lives that reflect the values of the kingdom of God.

Then the keeper fell before Paul saying, “What must I do to be saved?”

I reiterated this text because it is so prophetic, especially in this season with disaster after disaster and misplaced families. We should ask God for strength to stay in the struggle until He has done what needs to be done in and through us. May we be prepared to be used by God to bring others to Christ when they come asking, “What must I do to be saved!”

With the weather getting to be more like fall, let the beauty of the season compel us to worship our God! In Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 the bible tells us, “Two are better than one…. if either of them falls down, one can help the other up. During our first ever Applebee’s Flapjack Fundraiser, we certainly had more than two of our youth coming out to help us raise money for our Youth Ministry! Not only did we raise money, but we also had fun doing it. Those youth that helped were rewarded with a free movie and popcorn at the AMC Movie Theater, compliments of the Youth Ministry. If your youth missed out on this one, make sure they get in on the next one! Thank you, thank you and thank you again to our youth and to all those who bought tickets or supported us in any way.

CHOOSE YOUR CONSEQUENCES The answers you find will come from the questions you ask. The things you accomplish will result from the efforts you mount. The places you go will depend on the journeys you undertake. The rewards you enjoy flow from the risks you are willing to accept. When you control the causes, the effects will be to your liking. What you get from any experience or situation depends primarily on what you put into it. Those who are wise, have made the effort to learn. Those who are wealthy, have made the effort to earn. Output depends on input. Input depends on you. What you are giving will determine how you are living. You can get whatever you desire by taking the steps that will cause it to happen. Everything you do has a consequence. Use that reality to your advantage. Choose your ideal consequences by carefully choosing your actions.
