7Dear Incubation Partner,

Every day, we experience the world becom-ing a global village where boundaries, language barriers and distances are becoming less and less relevant. Whether we like it or not, globalization affects our lives in every way possible: travel, culture, education and the way we conduct business.

Following more efficient communication and transport systems, as well as reduc-tions in WTO trade barriers, competition amongst companies, countries and entire continents is constantly increasing.

The poultry industry – including the hatchery industry – is no exception to this global trend. Today, virtually no player in poultry meat or egg production is immune to international competition. At Petersime, we view such a challenge as a healthy driver! Competition forces all industry players to constantly innovate and improve so that resources such as energy, raw materials and labour are utilized in the most efficient way.

Petersime is the world leader in incu - bators and hatcheries. Our role is to provide customers with the technology, incubation support, service packages and turnkey solutions that maximize the lifetime economic return of their hatcheries. In this issue of our newsletter, you’ll discover some of our ambitions, plans and projects that will enable us to serve you even better.

I wish you a pleasant read.

For over ten years, Petersime has been successfully supplying the worldwide incubator market with its single-stage AirStream-er™ technology. The time was right to look at how we could improve the performance of hatcheries and the profit of our customers even more. We tested the latest developments of our proven AirStreamer™ technol-ogy extensively in various industrial hatcheries for more than a year. These tests resulted in the launch of the new S-line, which features two models: the AirStreamerPlus™ and the BioStreamer™. Although the concept of both models is iden-tical, the BioStreamer™ features additional autopilot functions based on the Petersime patent-ed Embryo-Response Incuba-tion™ technology.

S-line attracts VIV visitors

The S-line presentation to the public took place at the VIV Europe exhibition in Utrecht (the Neth-erlands) last April. Although the number of visitors to the show was far less than expected due to the volcanic ash cloud, the Petersime stand was constantly welcoming interested professionals. Both S-line models were on display at Peter-sime’s 330 m² stand.

Visitor reactions were positive throughout the event. The clean appearance of the machines was complimented, as were the large panoramic windows in the new white door panels. These provide a clear view of the easy-to-clean setter or hatcher cabinet inside. The absence of ducts and false ceil-ings enables the machines to be cleaned thoroughly. Visitors were also pleasantly surprised to see the controller screen light up when they approached the machine. This Eye-Blink™ feature shows the overall status of the process time and incubation parameters of the running machine. We also show-cased the energy-saving features of our machines, such as the high efficiency motors and the rede-signed, maintenance-free turning mechanism.

Optimal temperature distribution, easier programmingPetersime’s new Air Mixing Center was welcomed with great enthu-siasm. Air now enters through the centre of the machine and is evenly distributed across the eggs. The resulting optimal temperature distribution leads to perfect uni-formity and chick quality.

The two new control systems – Iris-Plus™ and Bio-Iris™ – were also well

received since they enable basic hatchery functions to be operated from the controller keyboard. Pro-gramming the machines has never been easier because incubation programs can now be uploaded from the Petersime service website through the network or via a USB memory stick.

Preview convinces customersThe S-line was officially introduced to the press last February. Custom-ers who had ordered AirStreamer™ machines for delivery after Febru-ary but before the official launch of our S-line were given a preview of all S-line innovations. They were also given the opportunity to order this new model instead. Much to our delight, almost all custom-ers switched their orders to the S-line incubators, a testament to the quality of our developments. The primary reasons for switching were lower energy consump-tion, easier maintenance, shorter cleaning times and optimized air distribution. These machines have since been delivered and are now already up and running in numer-ous hatcheries.

Petersime sells 1,000th S-line incubator to Gallus KFT

Gallus KFT is the biggest broiler producer in Hungary. The com-pany, which was established in 1991, owns 15 parent stock farms, 3 hatcheries, a processing unit and a feed mill. Gallus KFT decided to replace all of their incubators with Petersime S-line BioStreamer™ models to achieve even higher hatchability and even greater chick quality.

“Petersime incubators have been serving us for many years and we have always been satisfied with them,” says Mr Ákos Szabó, Produc-

tion Manager of Gallus KFT. “We needed to invest in the latest technology in order to meet today’s market requirements.”

R&D efforts rewarded“We are very proud of this major success of our S-line,” adds Geert Callens, Strategic Business Devel-opment Manager at Petersime. “It confirms that our continuous investments in R&D and our efforts to develop incubators with the best return on investment for customers are appreciated by the market.”

Only a few months since the launch of our S-line we have already received orders for over 1,000 machines. The 1,000th order was placed by Gallus KFT (Hungary).

Instant market success for Synchro-Hatch™

“Since I have installed Synchro-Hatch™, I have seen that the hatch window has been

shortened a lot and that the chicks are all uniform. Moreover, I’ve experienced a higher

hatchability and a lower post-hatch mortality.”

Minimum hatch window, maximum chick quality

Petersime has already delivered close to 400 units of its Synchro-Hatch™ technology since its launch in 2009. Synchro-Hatch™ improves chick uniformity by minimizing the hatch window. It avoids both dehydrated early birds and wet late birds, thus increasing overall chick quality significantly.

Impressive field results“Since the launch of Synchro-Hatch™ at the VIV Asia trade fair in March 2009, our new technology has been adopted by many customers throughout the world,” says Geert Callens, Strategic Business Develop-ment Manager at Petersime. “At the time of this article going to press, sales figures stood at close to 400 units, proving the success of Synchro-Hatch™ in the market.”

Synchro-Hatch™ reduces the hatch window by an average of 30% (see graph). It also increases egg hatcha-bility by an average of 0.77%. “Figures show that customers who invest in Synchro-Hatch™ benefit from a return on investment in less than one year, which explains its market suc-cess,” adds Geert Callens. “Moreover, the shorter time to first feed and the better end weight uniformity result in additional considerable profit gains in the rest of the food chain.”

Narrowing the hatch windowSynchro-Hatch™ ensures that the first egg hatches as late as possible, and that the time frame between the first and the last egg to hatch is reduced to a minimum. If the chicks stay in the hatcher too long, they will dry out. Synchro-Hatch™ avoids both dehydrated early birds and wet late birds, thus increasing overall chick quality significantly. The reduced hatch window results in greater chick uniformity, lower post-natal mortality and improved feed conversion.

Mimicking natural patterns“The system monitors the entire hatching process by means of a sen-sor that is attached to the hatching basket,” explains Roger Banwell, Sen-ior Incubationist at Petersime. “This sensor is placed as close as possible to the eggs without touching them. The system detects precisely when the first eggs are ready to hatch. Delaying the hatching of the first eggs is accomplished by adapting temperature and humidity, thus mimicking natural patterns. Once the first eggs are ready to hatch, Synchro-Hatch™ automatically brings the egg environment into a position that encourages the chicks to break out more rapidly. As a result, hatchery managers also know with greater precision when the eggs will hatch.”

Reproducing natural interplaysSynchro-Hatch™ is part of the Peter-sime patented Embryo-Response Incubation™ technology, which reproduces the most natural envi-ronment for the embryo. A unique feature of the technology is that it reproduces the natural interplay between a hatching chick and a parent hen. “Once a chick is ready to hatch, for instance, it enters the air cell within the egg and emits a signal that ‘calls’ the parent hen”, adds Roger Banwell. “Synchro-Hatch™ detects these signals and mimics the response from the parent hen by adapting the hatching environment accordingly and automatically.”

Synchro-Hatch™ enables a much smaller hatch window.

The system features a sensor that is placed as close as possible to the eggs.

Reference hatchery layouts: getting client projects on the right trackAt Petersime, we aim to continuously improve customer service and to increase the added value for our customers. Our latest developments are fully worked-out reference layouts for hatcheries. Based on our extensive hatchery know-how, these reference layouts help your hatchery project get off to a smooth start.

9

Petersime has many years of experi-ence in designing hatchery layouts. Since starting up our in-house hatch-ery project department in 1972, we have made over 6,600 hatchery drawings. Over the years, we have had numerous contacts with hatch-ery managers and other key people in the poultry market. Consequently, we know what it takes to build an efficient hatchery. Our hatchery solutions always take into account operational requirements, techno-logical evolutions, environmental constraints, local regulations, bio-security demands, and many other elements involved in the project management of a hatchery design.

Wide range of questions covered

When you start thinking about a new hatchery, you need to address many important issues. Numerous elements influence hatchery layout and size such as capacity, incuba-tor size, number of hatches, egg storage capacity, chick treatment, landscape, building limitations and the way eggs are delivered to the hatchery. But there’s much more. What will be the total running cost of your hatchery? What is state-of-the-art in the market today? What do other experts think about hatcher-ies? It’s vital to get the right answers to these questions so that you can make the best capital investment de-cision. Petersime’s reference hatchery layouts are the perfect starting point to investigate your project.

Reference layouts for two different capacities

Petersime has developed two fully worked-out reference layouts for hatcheries:

• The first layout is for a hatchery with a capacity of one million eggs a week, based on four hatches a week

• The second layout is for a hatchery with a capacity of two million eggs a week, also based on four hatches a week

These reference layouts enable Petersime to pass on its expertise to customers. The layouts correspond to Petersime’s recommendations for building the most efficient hatchery. In addition, Petersime also calculates the running cost for different climate zones.

Clear objectives

In designing the reference layouts, we have considered the following key objectives:

• Creating the smallest but workable footprint

• Providing an efficient workflow based on our standard “go through” principle to prevent backtracking

• Making provision for dedicated rooms for each operation and separating dirty areas from clean ones (for bio-security reasons)

In the past we already installed several embryo-response incuba-tors in Brazil. Activities in Latin America really took of when As de Oros, located in Lima, Peru, contracted Petersime for its latest modern hatchery project. We re-main thankful to Ing. Javier Pomi-ano from As de Oros for his trust in our company and products.

In a continuing effort to better serve its customers, AVICOL (Avicola Colombiana SA), located in Ibagué, Colombia, has recently modernized its San Felipe hatchery. With over 50 years of experience in the production of broiler breeders and layer parent stock, AVICOL has decided that the time is right to upgrade the hatchery with the latest Petersime Embryo-Response IncubationTM technology.

Granja Tres Arroyos, one of the largest poultry producing companies in Argentina with over 4,500 employees, has selected Petersime for the expansion of its poultry operations to cater for its continuing growth in the global market.

Grupo Frangos Canção, based in Maringa, Paraná state, Brazil, is one of the country’s fastest grow-ing broiler integrators and poultry meat exporters. Moreover, the company is the leading partner of Unifrango, an association of 19 Brazilian poultry producing companies. We are proud that Grupo Frangos Canção contrac-ted Petersime for the expansion of its hatchery capacity with an extra 83 million eggs/year.
