NEWS & VIEWS COLLINGWOOD COLLEGE - KINGSTON ROAD - CAMBERLEY - SURREY - GU15 4AE - 01276 457600 Issue 19 - 12 February 2020 News & Views FROM THE PRINCIPAL Gym Club Gate Please can I ask Parents and Carers to remind their sons and daughters in Years 7 to 11 that the Gym Club gate can only be used by staff and Sixth Form students. The gate is now clearly signed, has an electronic lock fitted and is monitored by CCTV. Sanctions will be imposed if anyone attempts to tailgate through this area. Please emphasise that this has been done to ensure student safety. Hair Colouring/Styles We have seen some alternativehair colouring this week and also one or two lines shaved into the hair of students. Both these actions are against College policy. We expect these issues to be rectified post half-term and I would really appreciate parental support on this matter. If students appear with unacceptable hair colouring or hair styles after the half-term term break we will have no alternative but to isolate them as per our Behaviour Policy. Thank you for your continued support in ensuring we maintain the highest standard of student uniform and appearance. Ski Trip Good luck to Mr Cleary, Miss Angell, Miss Robinson and Mr San Emeterio as they take a group of our students to Killington, USA for a week of skiing. The snow conditions are looking good! I hope everyone enjoys a good half-term break! Mr Tanner - Principal PE EQUIPMENT RECOMMENDATIONS The PE Department have noticed recently that fewer and fewer students have football boots as part of their PE kit. In a bid to improve standards and safety in PE, we would like to inform parents and carers that the inclusion of moulded or studded football boots as part of our studentsPE kit is highly recommended and that our website guidance to parents has been adjusted to reflect this. Experience has taught us that students wearing moulded or studded footwear appropriately chosen depending on the conditions outside, significantly improves their ability to change direction, accelerate and stay on their feet, therefore increasing the quality of performance of our students and incidentally keeping them safer too. Further to this, we know that outlets such as Sports Direct and Decathlon are selling perfectly suitable pairs for between £20- £30. What we also realise as a department is that as our students become increasingly more suitably prepared for sport outside, that the need for shin pads (that we also highly recommend) is in turn going to increase and once again as per the letter we released earlier this year, those above mentioned outlets are selling perfectly suitable pairs for between £15-£20. What we have noticed as well, is that for those students that do have a pair of football boots, their trainers remain clean for indoor sports such as Badminton, Basketball or Circuit Training, etc. We feel that understanding the difference between types of footwear used for both indoor and outdoor activities, is an important part of the way we prepare our PE students for leading healthy, active lifestyles after life at Collingwood. We do appreciate that equipping students for school can be an expensive undertaking. Mr Beer - Head of PE Department

Exam certificate postage payment is available on ParentPay. Please ensure payment is made as soon as possible to ensure your child receives their exam certificates for the summer 2020 season. This is of particular importance for those students in Year 11 and 13 who are leaving the College. To avoid certificates being lost in transit or left crumpled at the bottom of a school bag, we encourage payment to be made for Year 9 and 10 too. For those that make payment for postage, exam certificates are usually despatched in December using Royal Mail’s ‘Signed For’ service. Certificates will be required by future employers and further education institutes. If you don’t have your certificates when you need them in later life, the exam boards can provide a replacement statement of results but it is very costly.

Important Dates for your Diary

Sunday 16 February 2020: Last day to order our author’s book on Parent Pay for Years 7, 8, 9 and 10: ‘Chinglish, An Almost Entirely True Story’ by Sue Cheung (the Book Company needs three weeks to despatch our order for Wednesday 11 March). Wednesday 11

March: Author Visit - Sue Cheung for Years

7, 8, 9 and 10: We are very happy to announce that the Library has arranged for author, Sue Cheung, to visit Collingwood on Wednesday 11 March. Sue has very kindly recorded a short video to introduce herself to the students prior to her visit. I will play the video this week during assemblies. We met Sue last year at the Student Librarian Conference and were truly impressed by her story. She is a great example of perseverance and positivity for us all. She is promoting her book: ‘Chinglish, an Almost Entirely True Story’. Take a few minutes to have a look at her blog: https://www.suepickford.com/blog/ .

Also Happening in February and March 2020:

National Book Tokens for Years 7 and 8 Students Each Year 7 and 8 student will receive a £1 National Book Token. These can be used in bookshops, the Library Book Fair, and can be used for audio books also. There is also a chance to win a family trip to Legoland in Denmark. If you are not using them, please pass them on! Book Fair A Book Fair will be visiting the Library between Monday 23 March and Friday 3 April 2020. Students will be able to use their £1 book tokens. More information about this event will be given nearer the time. New Painting and Colouring Activity Once a Month for a Whole Week If you like painting and drawing this activity is for you. Painting and colouring equipment will be available in the Library at break and lunch time. This will run a week at a time once a month. The first week is from Monday 2 March until Friday 6 March. Overdue Books/DVDs Any parents who have received letters or telephone calls about overdue books or DVDs, please return the items to either the Library or any one of the reception areas (marked for the attention of Ms S Blay) as soon as possible. If there is an issue with returning these items please contact the Library between 12.00pm and 4.00pm Monday to Friday on 01276 457600 extension 427 to discuss.
