Summer 2012 WELCOME to the Summer 2012 issue of the Videotel Marine International Newsletter. The last few months have been extremely hectic with new product launches, new courses starting, fantastic news stories and as we go into the summer we are excited to be launching VOD G2 and NVOD G2, the second generation system for our ground- breaking Videotel on Demand system. Videotel was established at the request of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) in 1973 to produce and distribute safety training software and materials serving the maritime community today. As well as our award winning videos, programmes and courses on board over 10,000 vessels, we have the largest portfolio of maritime computer based training (CBT) materials in the world. With over 800 titles and over 100 million training hours accomplished to date, Videotel is dedicated to promoting the learning of hundreds of thousands of seafarers across the globe. IN THIS ISSUE... • Videotel launch VOD G2 • Training is not just a tick box exercise - Videotel launch new CCM tool • US Coast Guard choose VOD • New blended learning for ECDIS underway • Videotel & MTS work together • Videotel Academy gets underway with MLC Course • Dynamic Positioning course launched Award winning training • New programme and courses launched • Client awards • Forthcoming programmes to watch for Points of view NEWS & VIEWS UPDATE CCM Online VIDEOTEL LAUNCH VOD G2 and NVOD G2 Videotel was pleased to announce that the US Coast Guard (USCG) in Yorktown, Virginia which trains Port State Control Officers throughout the US, has taken delivery of Videotel on Demand (VOD) units. ‘We are delighted to be supporting the USCG’s efforts’, said Nigel Cleave. ‘Towards the end of last year, we worked with the US Department of Homeland Security’s Customs and Border Protection agency to develop a training program, which offered a new and updated approach to US Port State Control. We welcome the opportunity to once again contribute to the training needs within this complex and important environment.’ Nigel Cleave, Videotel CEO, presented a commemorative plaque to Rear Admiral Linda Fagan of USCG CREW COMPETENCY IS NOT JUST A TICK BOX EXERCISE Continuing competency in the maritime industry should be at the top of every ship owner or manager’s agenda. The training of seafarers is key and the more competent and well-trained the crew, there is less likelihood of incidents or accidents which cost both time and money. That is the hard-hitting message from Videotel as we launch our Continuing Competency Manager (CCM) tool, designed to identify and develop the skills essential to safe and efficient shipboard operations. Our training is both top quality and highly authoritative with material developed in conjunction with experts in the field. We include informative video, dynamic animated content and a substantial range of timed randomised questions to really challenge seafarers. Our training is not easy - we don’t want it to be just a ‘tick-box’ exercise; we have designed it to increase skill, ability and onward development. Forming what is essentially a Circle of Continuing Competency the CCM system provides a CPD life cycle which moves and progresses with individuals and forms detailed crew training schedules and reports as companies plan, train, assess, record and report all their training activity. Developed and perfected over 5 years, it uses cloud-based technology to provide continuous training and assessment directly through Videotel’s web Fleet Training Administrator (webFTA).
